Karen could sense that Zi was enjoying their time together. Likewise, Karen was enjoying her time with Zi. Zi seemed hopeful that they were forming a new friendship. Karen smiled; she was pleased about their potential friendship, even an acquaintance was nice.
Karen noticed that Zi felt like she was getting more out of the meeting than Karen was, but why?
This thought puzzled Karen. When someone else's thoughts were 'loud' in a Betazoid way, she sensed their thoughts as a silent dialogue. Some people find this disturbing, sometimes in a subtle way and sometimes in a rude way. The double negation in Zi's thoughts was difficult for Karen to follow for example, almost like chasing an iron ball bouncing on a flipper.
Stendhal: oO Friends or acquaintance? Who was gaining what in the conversation? It was some sort of mental loop. Oo
Furthermore, an old song about friendship started playing in her head. A pleasant song with lively trumpets and percussion, but it risked distracting her.

Stendhal: (holding her PADD) Whenever you're ready.

Karen observed her new friend's handwriting; it was truly fluid and legible, much better than her own chicken scratch.

Section 4: Cognitive Abilities

Problem-Solving: How do you approach problem-solving? Do you prefer a logical or intuitive approach?

Decision-Making: How do you make decisions? Do you weigh the pros and cons carefully, or do you rely on your gut instincts?

Adaptability: How adaptable are you to new situations and challenges? Can you quickly adjust your plans when things don't go as expected?

Zi finished completing that part of the questionnaire just in time to order new drinks. This time, Karen imitated her new friendly acquaintance and also ordered a hot tea.

Nijal: Well, then! Can I give you the quick version first?

Stendhal: (sipping the tea) Yes sure. I would love that!

Nijal: (another smile) I'm a logical, adaptable weigher.

Stendhal: Oh, good! Straight to the point, and I must say, very Vulcan!

Nijal: Definitely. I do think that a lot of my approach to -- well, everything -- comes from all the years I've spent developing my engineering abilities. Engineering is ultimately problem-solving, so I'm very much about working through the problem to its conclusion, weighing all options, and then making a decision.

Karen took a similar piece of tempura and appreciated its tangy aftertaste.

Stendhal: You're definitely a role model. In the past, I've met engineers who were unable to think or act outside of technical manuals or established procedures, an approach completely devoid of creativity and often frustratingly inconclusive.

Nijal: I don't think you'd find an engineer who didn't believe they were adaptable. Or if they thought so, then maybe they're not a very good engineer? But I do think I am, very much so.

Stendhal: TOh, believe me, I've come across plenty of them in the past. As stiff as a board and about as useful as a chocolate teapot and adaptable as a square peg in a round hole. If it makes sense!

Nijal: Response.

Stendhal: Well, we've already got Section 5. And please don't take these questions personally!
Karen handed the paper to Zi.

Nijal: Response.

Section 5: Physical and Mental Health
Physical Health: Are you in good physical health? Do you have any chronic health conditions or limitations?
Mental Health: Have you ever been diagnosed with a mental health condition? If so, how is it managed?
Substance Use: Do you use any substances (e.g., alcohol, drugs)? If so, how do they affect your behavior and decision-making?

Nijal: Response.
