LTJG Lhandon Joseph Nilsen - The XO On The Hill

(Outside the city of New Faren, New Bajor)

Lhandon had noticed someone on a hill just outside New Faren. It wasn't the largest hill on New Bajor, but it provided a view of the entire city. Anyone who glanced over it would have seen a Bajoran city with modern touches. Wide roads allowed easy transport between homes and businesses, and a pearl white monorail system stood out. The sounds of the city were nothing more than dull white noise turned down.

The sun was high in the sky, and the light from the New Bajoran star tried to conceal the person standing on the hill, but Nilsen had recognized the silhouette of his Deka-drinking first officer.

Nilsen: I know that look sir. That’s the look of someone with something heavy on their mind.

He had taken out a cigarette and placed it in his mouth, a second later, he anticipated Etan’s response.

Nilsen: I’m off duty. Used to go though so many of these. But old vices you know

He was in his civilian clothes, a yellow lumberjack shirt unbuttoned over a white vest, jeans and boots.

Etan: Response.

Nilsen: How you doing though sir…like really. After the mine and everything?

Etan: Response.

He still hadn’t lit the cigarette, instead he sighed and picked it between two of his fingers and out of his mouth.

Nilsen: Cos I ain’t seen you around much since then. Not once have you come to loom over me in the OC nor has the smell of Deka Tea announced your presence. You’re almost making me think I’m off the hook. You sure you alright sir?

Etan: Response.

It had taken Lhandon a considerable amount of work to realize that Etan didn't hate him. The HCO officer eventually understood what had happened; initially, there was anger and rage from the reprimand, followed by sadness and the feeling of having let Etan down. This was swiftly succeeded by the belief that Etan despised him and a drive to regain favour with the XO over the following months.
