((OOC: I’m presuming this sim takes place a little bit later than most of the other ones that have been sent so far—maybe at least a week or two into leave or so.))
((First Officers Office, Deck 3, USS Octavia E. Butler))
There hadn’t been a formal ceremony—not yet, anyway, Avander had been assured one was on the way—but he had already started his new job. Apparently “leave was a great time to get transitioned and to step into your new role at your own pace.” Which turned out to be code for “you’re not going to get to relax and enjoy shore leave.”
Maybe there will still be a chance to take Meander on a stroll through Deep Space 14’s habitat ring.
He looked over at the mountains of PADDs on his desk.
oO Eventually. Oo
Lieutenant Commander Aine Sherlock was sat on the opposite side of the desk, nose buried in a PADD containing duty rosters. She had been assigned as the new 2nd Officer and their first joint task was to see to personnel adjustments.
Avander gave a side-eye to the stack of PADDs.
oO Why couldn’t they have just sent all the digital files to my computer station? Oo
He supposed it was nice to compartmentalize some of this information, but it seemed that the principle had been taken to excess. Before he could complain about it, however, the door chimed.
Promontory: Enter…
The doors slid open and Jack Kessler stood at the threshold, looking a bit lost.
Kessler: I’m sorry, I didn’t know you were in a meeting.
Sherlock: It's quite alright, Lieutenant.
Avander wrinkled his brow; Jack seemed a little… off. Although that was probably to be expected, given he had spent the last several months in an enemy prison camp.
Promontory: What can we do for you Jack?
Kessler: Look at you two. I take a vacation and come back and you two are Commanders now and First and Second officers of this new ship. Congratulations to both of you.
Sherlock: Things change fast. But we keep pressing on.
She gave the officer a faint smile. The man would likely need several sessions with the counselor.
oO Oh, no, do I have to order him to go to counseling!? Oo
Avander would do so, if needed, but forced therapy was only slightly better than no therapy and much much worse than if the patient went voluntarily.
Promontory: (cautiously) Well, if that was a vacation, you should get a refund. I assume the Zet prisons aren’t much like Federation Penal Colonies.
While he had never visited a rehab settlement, Avander had actually heard good things about them, at least those run by the Federation. He doubted any of the species they had encountered in the Gamma Quadrant had anything so civilized.
Kessler: Well, certainly not like any prison I even envisioned.
The mood wasn’t improving.
Sherlock: So, what can we do for you? Thinking of taking some time off? Risa maybe?
Kessler: Well, actually….I know I have not been back long but I need something to do.
Sherlock: I'm sure we can find something. ::turning to look back at Promontory:: Can we?
Avander nodded along to Aine’s response.
Promontory: Of course! We actually have a good number of open tasks (gesturing to the PADDs) in almost every department. Do you have a preference?
Kessler: I guess I had assumed I would be returning to Tactical when I came back but honestly, if you need me somewhere else then I’m yours.
Oh! Jack wasn’t looking for some busy work to keep his mind occupied; he was looking to be reinstated.
Sherlock: Is that where you feel you'd be most effective?
Promontory: I figured you'd be going back there… eventually. But are you sure you are ready for full-time so soon?
Kessler: response
Avander arched an eyebrow at that.
Sherlock: And what about ::beat:: our Acting Chief of Tactical? Would that be a problem?
Kessler: response
Promontory: No, I’d imagine she’d stay in that role for the transition. Unless, like the Commander asked, that would be a problem?
Avander seemed to recall that Jack and Michele had been involved. Workplace romances could be complicated, but surely Jack was a seasoned enough officer that that wouldn’t actually be a problem. Unless, perhaps, he really wasn’t back up to scratch.
Kessler: Response
Sherlock: Response
Promontory: Well then that’s decided. (beat) Once you have all your official clearances.
Kessler/Sherlock: Response
Promontory: We can only do so much. You’re going to need to get an official chit from Medical—physical and psychological. And I think my replacement would also like to have a word before your security clearance is restored. (smiling officiously) But I’m sure that can all be taken care of post haste. It will give you something to do while we get the rosters updated.
