OOC: Short n’ Sweet it is!

(( A Hill Overlooking New Faren, New Bajor Colony ))

Etan: I’ve been in meetings and security briefings with Starfleet Command for most of the last few weeks. :: he drew in a breath and steeled himself. :: I’ve been given command of the ‘Oumuamua.

Considering that Iljor’s promotion was not yet common knowledge, the news came as something as a surprise to Lhandon Nilsen.

Nilsen: That’s….congratulations sir. I’m so happy for you. That’s comes as a bit of a shock

Iljor nodded his head in agreement. That makes two of us.

Etan: Came as a shock to me too. :: beat :: I honestly had not expected command of a ship for a few years yet. I guess with all the issues Starfleet have had over the last few years, they’re looking for fresh blood.

The news that a Tal Shiar operative had been masquerading as the head of Starfleet Security had come as a horrific surprise to many. Oh had been largely responsible for the organisation’s isolationist stance in the wake of the Dominion War and the Romulan Supernova, and had exerted undue influence over the Commander in Chief. The lasting effects of Oh’s deception would likely last for a decade or more- but Starfleet were determined to move on by cleaning house. Out with old and in with the new- which in this case was Iljor.

Nilsen: Yeah there’s definitely been erm...issues, but you really do deserve this sir.

Suddenly feeling philosophical, Iljor looked intently at Nilsen. Though they had served together for almost a year, he felt like he had known the pilot a lot longer. He was a larger than life personality who left an indelible impression on people- both in good and bad ways. The outgoing XO had always believed in Nilsen- even when the man seemed to revel in getting in his own way. In fact, he had been disappointed that he was not able to take the man with him back to the ‘Oumuamua.

Etan: Just in case, I don’t get to say this before I leave the Butler: it’s been a pleasure serving with you, Lieutenant. Truly.

Nilsen: It’s been an honour.

Without warning, Nilsen flew at Iljor and wrapped his muscular arms around him. Taken aback by the gesture, he didn’t immediately respond but after a few seconds, returned the embrace and took solace in it.

Nilsen: I’m…going to miss you, sir.

The two men extricated themselves from the hug and Iljor felt a little exposed before the still junior officer. Curiously, his cheeks flushed warm and he did not why he was suddenly embarrassed.

Etan: I- will miss you as well. :: he said, a little self-consciously.::

Nilsen: While I got the chance, thank you ::beat:: for everything.

Clearly this was a day meant to be filled with surprises, as it quickly transpired that Nilsen was crying. Iljor went to console the man with a pat on the shoulder that would no doubt feel awkward, but mercifully the conn officer composed himself quickly.

Etan: No need to thank me, Lhando. :: beat :: I didn’t really do anything.

It was Nilsen that had turned himself around: Iljor had just yelled loudly at him. Humans might have called it a “kick up the butt”- but the hard work had come from the curly haired officer.

Nilsen: Just tell whoever's on the helm that she leans to the left a little and you gotta be gentle with the inputs ::beat:: and they should talk to her too, she responds better that way.

A chuckle escaped Iljor’s lips.

Etan: My alpha shift conn officer is already planning on connecting with you and Toxin. I… may have suggested it. :: beat :: You take good care of the Butler- and she’ll take care of you. :: remembering an earlier conversation with Promontory, he smirked. :: And for Prophet’s sake…. don’t crash her.
