Karen sighed, feeling utterly exhausted. The stress from her last mission had been immense, and she had only returned to active duty a few months prior. Two missions aboard Starbase and then a transfer to the Butler had taken their toll.
Perhaps it was the stress, but Karen was beginning to question her decision. Had she made the right choice?
In that moment, she felt like a fish out of water, increasingly distant from home. The planet New Bajor, visible through the large panoramic window, offered no solace; instead, it filled her with a pang of sadness.
She missed Betazed, she missed France and her grandfather, and she even missed Starbase 118!
Lost in these not-so-positive thoughts, she wandered through the bar, undeniably charming with its vast collection of books. It was then that she noticed Josh, who was also calling her name.
Herrick: (waving) Counselor, over here!
Stendhal: Greetings, Chief Engineer! It's a delight to encounter you again here, a far cry from the bustling cargo hold teeming with alien refugees I encountered earlier.
Herrick: (motioning to the empty chair in front of him). Please, be my guest.
Stendhal: Thanks, I've been on my feet all day. My feet are killing me! I'd love to sit down.
Herrick: How’s it going?
Karen couldn't help but snoop around in the acting chief's head for a sec, a weird mix of nosiness and doubt clouding her own thoughts. All that self-help jargon she'd been reading was swirling around in her brain too.
Stendhal: Oh I feel just very tired! And I think you have more personality than a hologram for sure!
Herrick: Response?
Stendhal: I apologize for any intrusion. I sometimes experience flashes of other people's thoughts, even though I make an effort to respect their privacy. I only pick up on the strongest impressions.
Herrick: Response?
Stendhal: This place is intense! All these brainy vibes, I wouldn't be surprised if they fueled their minds with something stronger than coffee. Like alcoholic beverages. Feels more like a library than a hangout, you know?
Herrick: Response?
