((Undisclosed Secret Lair Dome, I-Kiyo Dyson Ring))
Lahl: So, we’ve got a failing system, that typical fixes from the past is not fixing. And obviously we can’t turn it off and turn it back on again.
Richards: Obviously.
Kimonzi gave Anton a look with the other engineer she had been working with.
Engineer: Yes! Just like it was obvious that there was no issue with the quantum variance. Despite our terminology differences, ::pointing around:: this system keeps track of every little detail. Unless the whole system is wrong, we’ve accounted for everything.
Herrick: (nodding) That’s a good point; what if they are wrong?
Mi’ch’ael 65: But the readouts tell us the health of the system, that’s what we use for our diagnostics.
Herrick: Right, but do you do diagnostics of your diagnostics systems?
The Trill looked at the engineer, pondering what the case would be.
Anton glanced towards the Engineer that had been eyeing him.
Richards: Great point.
Lahl: Let’s just figure out a diagnostic, and we can see if everything is good to go.
Engineer: ::exasperatedly:: Fine.
She diligently worked with the Engineer, making sure to take his input into account as they worked. Additionally, she needed his help with the operating system the Dyson Ring used as she was not used to it. As they continued, she could understand his frustration. Trying to keep up to date technology running properly was hard enough, let alone ancient technology whose manual was lost to the ages.
Herrick: What’s up with your eyes flashing like that?
Mi’ch’ael 65: We are synthetic service droids; it’s our signal to the non-synths that we’re working on their request or processing large amounts of data. Do you not have synthetics in your worlds?
Richards: In a certain sense we do. So you guys access all that information remotely, even here?
Mi’ch’ael 65: Correct; we can access a common network of published knowledge, for example your language. Though sensitive information, like the issue we’re dealing with, are kept locally within us.
Anton nodded. It wasn’t shocking to see the Synth’s acting on behalf of their creators. The manner and fashion in which they chose to act through the Synth’s was what confused Anton the most.
Richards: Hm. I see.
Herrick: Interesting, thank you for sharing. oO Unlike your mysterious counterpart Oo.
After a long bit of arguing, cajoling, and lots of “engineering words”, Kimonzi and the Engineer returned to the group.
Richards: Well. Figure anything out?
Lahl: Well, we did figure out the diagnostics. ::goes into technobabble::
Engineer: ::frustratedly:: Yes, we did. ::further technobabble::
Richards: Oh. Well that sounds like good news!
Lahl: Well…
Herrick/Mi’ch’ael 65: Response
Richards: But… What?
Lahl: Well, it’s going to take a bit.
Herrick/Mi’ch’ael 65: Response
Kimonzi tried to to not be as disgruntled as the Engineer beside her.
Richards: Oh. So how long will that take?
Lahl: About 24 standard minutes.
Herrick/Mi’ch’ael 65: Response
Richards: So then… we wait?
Lahl: Yes, we wait.
She looked at the timer with Anton, tapping her to and willing it to go faster, even though she knew that wasn’t how any of this worked.
Herrick/Mi’ch’ael 65: Response
Richards: How much less time are we talking about?
Lahl: A lot less time than any of us want.
Herrick/Mi’ch’ael 65: Response
The Trill was wracking her brain, trying to figure out ways that they could either lengthen the time they had or actually fix it, unfortunately, her training and her years of life in past lives did not have experience working these kinds of things.
Lahl: I’m not happy about this either! ::her frustration was rising at the whole situation::
Herrick/Richards/Engineer: Response
Lahl: Look, we just need to figure out how to reengineer a 12,000 year old shield generator. How hard could it possibly be?
She looked at the other engineers in the small crew they assembled.
Herrick/Richards/Engineer: Response
Lahl: Well, what is the first thing we can do? Would it be possible to replicate all new components for this and just replace everything?
Herrick/Richards/Engineer: Response
Lahl: Right, we’d need to turn it off to Ship of Theseus it.
Herrick/Richards/Engineer: Response
Kimonzi scratched her head, continuing to try to think about what happened as Lieutenant Herrick came up with an idea.
Lahl: Oh, that might work.
Herrick/Richards/Engineer: Response
