(Nilsen’s Quarters, Cabin, 602, Deck 4, USS Octavia E Butler))

Lhandon sat at his quarters after his shift. He was at his desk and his tunic was neatly over the back of his chair. To his right hand side was a mahogany case made by his own hand to display his medals. The Prisoner of War medal was tucked at the back, almost out of view, while his diplomacy medals take centre stage. To his left were a bunch of photos of his family back home, including some of the oldest ones he had available.

Nestled in between his family pictures were the pictures of his friends, prior JOPA meetings, the one where the entire JOPA group was crowed onto his couch and were squeezed into a frame would always bring a smile to him. There were pictures of himself and Toxin, back when they were not drifting,

He also had a picture of himself kissing Eli on the cheek.

He was definitely lucky to get onto deck four, thanks in large part to the intervention of Arloll.

His quarters were about the same size as everyone else's, but he was right inside the hull, almost in the middle of the deck, surrounded by corridors. He had set himself up a holographic display which mimicked winter, and the view shifted every hour or so to a different landscape from his home planet: rolling hills, forests that followed those hills, farmland that stretched in the valleys, and the rivers that flowed meander-like around.

He had on the desk in front of him a short checklist. This checklist was a series of things that he needed to cover in his logged operational reports. Meanwhile, his foot was healing up. Fortunately, the regenerator thing that Nis used—which he couldn't remember exactly what it was called—had done the trick, and his ankle felt better than it had in years. However, he also heard a rant from the doctor that if he should break the ankle again, he'd be in for it. He seemed to have a knack for annoying medical staff. That thought alone brought a little smile to his face and a small giggle.

However, this smile was in contrast to the mood he was feeling at that moment. There had definitely been something wrong, but what? His worries could be categorized as the words "We achieve what we dreamed of, and yet it feels like a nightmare." He and Toxin had been drifting further and further apart. Lhandon couldn't place when it was—some point after they joined the OEB—but none of that was on his checklist. His checklist was all business.

Operations log, stardate 240109.07

I am happy to report that we were successful in helping the crew of the Unity Dow get back on their feet. I am glad to see that we are able to recover as many members of the crew as possible and I am working my way through all the reports to fully understand the phasing phenomenon that they experienced.

With a number of the Unity Dow's crew recovered, we are able to get the ship operational and we are temporarily supplementing their operations roster with volunteers from our own crew.

I am also happy to report that we have restored limited functionality to our transporters after the prior issues that they faced. However for some reason I still do not understand, transporter room one smells of bananas and I fear we might not be able to get the smell out of the carpet. I plan to ask my mama if she has any cleaning tips.

I also want to note the actions of both Lt Sh'shelor and Ensign Caras. The bravery they showed is nothing short of inspirational to me. They were able to complete the tasks that were required to get the Dow functional while also facing their worst demons. The show the greatest in Starfleet..erm…greatness.

[[END OF REPORT]]

As he submitted the report, he switched applications to his personal logs. There was something on his mind, and while he hated these logs, he knew the use they served him, just to put his thoughts in line.

Personal log, Stardate 240109.07

Things are going my way for once. If someone tells me today that I'm in this position as assistant chief of ops on one of the newest starships in the fleet, I’d probably call them an idiot and tell them to be realistic. Yet here I am.

I also have the greatest love with Eli, and I love him so much. I have my friends around me too and I wouldn't change them for the universe.

But there is one thing, and looking back at the past few months, there is definitely something between myself and Toxin, but I don't know what it is. I have been trying to deny it, but I have to look at what is happening.

It is definitely distance. Is he trying to be aloof and trying to be this great commander? this captain that he sees himself to be and I see him to be? Who is he trying to be? I don't know, a kind of detached sort of commander? There is nothing wrong with that, but it's not who he is. I just don’t understand!

He might be a bit stubborn, but that makes two of us. He's a lot more stoic than myself, but I don't know... I wonder if this is just something that happens when you get that second pip, or if he is stressed, taking on too much work. I want to reach out to him and just say, "Hey, just tell me what's up," but I can't. I don't know why I can't!

What has gotten into him? He is different, but I can't explain how he is different. He is pushing me away or something. Is this a test? Is he doing this for my own good? I don't mind because I trust him, but oh my god.

I just wish I could march right up to him right now and ask what the hell is going on.

He sighed and spoke once more.
