(( CMO’s Office, Deck 5, USS Octavia E Butler ))

As the ship prepared to depart the Dyson Ring for DS14 (with a quick stop at Port Coray), Avander continued his first officer duties with a check-in on their acting chief medical officer. She seemed busy, as always, but well.

Unsurprisingly, her first report was that leadership came with an impressive amount of administrative work, something that Avander could relate to.

Promontory: Understandable. Anything else?

Toz: A couple of things. Do I recommend promotions when I think the person deserves it?

Avander smiled at that.

Promontory: We always take the recommendations of our department heads in mind and your recommendations would go a long way in helping us understand who to keep an eye on. (beat) Was there someone in particular you had in mind?

Toz: Well, I’m thinking of our counsellor and Miash, our head nurse. They’ve taken on more responsibilities than asked of them. Assuming you approve the transfer, Nurse Wing will take a turn on Bridge duty.

Promontory: We love having the junior staff help out on the bridge. Consider it done. And I’ll look into Miash, although as head nurse, there’s not many more places she could go.

He doubted the half-Klingon was suggesting the Ferengi nurse become CMO! The counsellor, however, was another matter, and after responding to Toz’s thoughts, he wanted to have a word with her about the biter.

Toz leaned back and asked a question of her own.

Toz: How’s your health? You’re part El-Aurian, aren’t you? Just how old are you? ::beat:: For my files.

Avander had prepared for this interview, but he hadn’t prepared to answer personal questions.

Promontory: Uh. I’m pretty well. (beat) And, yes, I’m part El-Aurian—it kinda confounds age-related questions. (beat) Did you want to do a more formal medical check-up?

The CMO was one of the few officers who could ‘pull rank’ as it were on the CO and XO if only to ensure they were medically fit for duty. Maybe he’d come back later for that. He didn’t want to mention the trouble sleeping at the moment—he’d give it another week to see if it went away on his own before he’d get medical help.

Toz: No, no. Okay, just curious. ::beat:: I’m anxious to gain another rank and of course, I’ll take on more responsibility. ::pause:: Just wanted you to know which way I’m heading as far as my career goes.

Promontory: Great, that’s good to hear. One of the things we look for in our senior staff is mentoring, helping facilitate our less experienced officers. It sounds like you’re on your way with the nurses.

Toz: Response

Promontory: I understand Counselor Standhal assaulted one of the science officers?

He left the statement hanging in the air like a question—he didn’t want to bias Dr. Toz’s assessment of the situation.

Toz: Response

Promontory: And in your professional opinion, we don’t have anything to worry about going forward?

They had had enough officers assaulting others during the previous mission and Avander certainly didn’t want to add more paperwork burden to the crew without need.

Toz: Response
