“Coiled Back Up”

((Gator Deck, Quarter Deck, Deck Twelve, USS Octavia E. Butler))

Xaivis: Don’t get too excited…the range and power are terrible, and the weight doesn’t help. They’re examining other option but for now it’s more of a command-and-control tool.

Jacen moved the unit around and brought it to a soft landing in front of them.

Winters: Ok, so now that we have these let’s start modding them to what we need on the ship. First issue I want you to overcome is the power and range issue.

Jacen looked down at the unit, he’d been considering the same but he actually wondered if another option might work…

Xaivis: I can certainly look into that – I’m sure there are some excellent engineers aboard…and you might have access to things an underfunded research lab didn’t.

Winters: My first thought would be looking at the power cells the mobile holo-emitters use. (beat) What about shielding?

He nodded as he sent the small drone for another spin around the lab, dancing around the one Winters had brought with here as it tracked its movements.

Xaivis: It’s not great either…it might withstand a couple of hits from a mark-two phaser but not anything heavier – it’s more of an evade rather than absorb methods of defence. I think they’ve done a good bit of tweaking the labs already.

Winters: (smirking) I know the engineers back in the labs try to think of everything but you and I are in the field. That changes things. What else would you modify or adapt to meet our requirements here in the field Lieutenant?

He’d been giving this a bit of thought already – although more for support options than combat.

Xaivis: For C-SAR operations – maybe a pattern booster module or small survival kit payload, something to increase survival chances ahead of a rescue team? In terms of combat…I wonder if a disruption system might be better…maybe even some sort of kinetic charge?

He landed the unit again and shut down the propulsion while examining it more closely.

Xaivis: It’s definitely the tricker problem…the more weight you add the bigger the sensor profile…although if it was delivered system it might not need as much energy, so a smaller power pack. We could…

The doors to the range swished open and another officer entered the room, she was in gold and Jacen assumed her to be a security officer. Her stance gave her away…and the boots…they shone in the light of the range. He generally favoured a more utilitarian approach – in a rapid response scenario it was batter to be already dressed for deployment. Seconds counted.

Winters: (turning back to Xaivis) Have a proposal on my desk at 08:00 tomorrow morning. I like these a lot Lieutenant. Great work securing them.

Xaivis: Thank you, Captain. Oh-Eight-Hundred sharp.

He’d need to work on it through the night of course – but then he didn’t really sleep anyway. Winters approached the new arrival, who had a distinct look on her face, and he began to back the ASP back into its 'basket'.
