Chief Engineer’s Log, Stardate 240109.02
We’ll be shortly arriving in I-Kiyo… Ickyo… (rustling PADD sounds) I-Kiyo space after our mission in Omicron Victor IV. From the recent reports I’ve read, the newest engineers in my department had performed exemplary throughout, and after seeing Ensign Lahl in action, I can attest to the veracity of them.
I only wish that my own service had been as such. Assaulting another officer, almost killing them and the captain, and then issuing the order to bring back the alternate Karen prior to merging the two patterns. While I fully believe that I was under the influence of some dark force, the actions leave me troubled and concerned. I had thought after Alpha Brenkelvi II that I would have mastered control of myself better — but it appears that I have much room to grow.
Given the events that have transpired, it has been strongly suggested that I take this time to process the events, off-duty, as well as report for counselling and meeting with the first officer that was scheduled after Humanoid Resources reviewed my last mission report. For now, I’ll be taking my leave off ship for the short time we have at the I-Kiyo Dyson Ring — perhaps seeing this technology firsthand will be a welcome distraction. The engineering department will be under the supervision of Lieutenant Johnson while I’m away.
End log.
After the computer let out a confirmatory tone that the recording was stopped, Josh let out a long sigh and ran his hand through his hair. All the way up until his posting, he’d imagined that he’d be out there gallivanting the galaxy, saving people and spreading hope — but the universe seemed to be giving more than plate could handle. He’d only been in the service for just over a year, and he was wondering what the several decades would be like; if he lasted, if he survived. Maybe there was something to working at the shipyards like his dad did, the certainty and stability.

People watching had become one of Josh’s hobbies. While he didn’t particularly want to be around people, large group events especially, he found something comforting in the fact that he wasn’t alone even if he didn’t have company. Today, however, he noticed many folks were noticeably fatigued. He spotted Eli, nursing an ale in the far distance. Another group of lower deckers playing Kalto, and a gregarious group of lieutenants swapping stories. As he watched on, he was startled by someone.
Any: Response
Herrick: Please.
He didn’t really want company but given how dire the perception of his social skills was onboard, he felt he couldn’t refuse.
Any: Response
Herrick: (nodding) Definitely a mission for the books.

Herrick: Me? I’m taking a bit of time to explore the Dyson Ring. I’ve never seen the technology in person, and I’m also curious about the impact it had on their cultural development. It should make for a good excursion. How about you?
Any: Response
He paused for a minute. Starfleet protocol typically frowned on visiting alien ports solo, and perhaps this rather positive personality would help shift his own mindset.
Herrick: (nodding) Sure.
