Katsim: Riley, with me.
Riley: (nodding) Right behind you, commander.
They made their way to the fields a short distance away. Katsim stood at the edge of the fields for a moment and Riley knelt down next to the edge.
Riley: Seems odd that there are fields ready for farming, but for some reason they are vacant.
He let a momentary pause linger between the two of them for a moment before he continued with his theorizing, and Katsim didn’t seem to interrupt or correct him as he continued.
Riley: I was thinking raiders, actually. What little I gleaned from that parent outside the wall makes me think that there’s something in the soil. My initial readings of the sap didn’t give off any indication that it contributed to the famine at all.
At that she shook her head, not in disagreement, but in agreement. Scans hadn’t indicated the sap had anything to do with the famine at all. Part of her wondered if the Continuance had dropped them in there just to annoy them.
Katsim: No, it’s not.
Riley: My next guess was actually going to be the soil itself. Logically, it'd make sense for us to run a scan, would it not?
Katsim: Yes.
Peri knelt down next to the edge of the field and ran her fingers over the soil. After procuring a tiny vial from her pocket she put some of the seeds into it then made the vial disappear from view into one of her many pockets.
Riley: Anything interesting?
After ensuring that there wasn’t a soul anywhere close, aside from Riley, from a different pocket, she procured a tricorder and started to scan the dirt.
Katsim: The soil looks rich, but it’s low in vital nutrients.
Any plant that sprouted in this region would likely die out very quickly as a result.
Riley: Lack of sunlight or rainfall? Do you suppose either could be the cause?
Katsim: Possibly…
She stood, and slipped her tricorder back into her pocket and glanced off in the direction of town. Peri’s
Guard: Grab them!
Nis was stopped, and Peri glanced over at Delar.
Katsim: We should go back.
Riley: Right behind you.
As the pair returned to the gate, they arrived just in time to see that the comotion had died down some. When they rejoined their companions, they were engaged in mid conversation with a group of people.
Richards: I… we are waiting to be reunited with the rest of our traveling party.
Noblewoman: A moment ago, you didn’t seem so keen on waiting.
Richards / Nis: Response.
Riley: We apologize for being late. We…that is, I, got distracted.
Katsim / Nis / Richards: Response
Noblewoman: Response
Riley: The source of the distraction is unimportant. We are here now. What were we talking about?
Katsim / Nis / Richards: Response
