(( Main Engineering Lower Level, Deck 11, USS Octavia E Butler ))

Jaz has had a great time so far, listening to her superior officers and feeling very welcomed. Being in such a great ship, and so quickly feeling like part of the crew, is a dream the little Bajoran kid that sketched ships and made inventions out of junk never thought would actually be real.

Emotional thoughts aside, Jaz was thrilled. They wanted to explore the USS Octavia E. Butler as much as possible, and get to know the crew better. They had a lot to learn from all of them, surely.

Boran: So what's Butler engineering's biggest headache these days? Every ship has one.

That was a straightforward question, Boran knew that. But hey, they did say they wanted to know The Butler as much as they could.

Lahl: Well, the computers keep getting taken over.

Rouiancet: Yes, that certainly is a headache.

Nilsen: Response

Lahl: I’ve been trying whenever I can to improve the computer security, but sometimes it gets away from me.

Rouiancet: You've had a lot of practice. The Butler's computer security is probably the best in the fleet.

Boran thought that was certainly interesting. She wasn't specialized in computer science engineering, especially security wise, but she was always up to a challenge. Knowledge is knowledge, after all.

Boran: I'd sure like to get my hands on it, when we have some time.

Nilsen: Response

Lahl: Besides the computer, we’re also always trying to improve the power efficiency on the Octavia E. Butler.

Boran couldn't help but smile ear to ear. Now that was more like it! Of course, she would love to help with the computer, but getting to work on the power systems was surely what Boran Jaz was made for.

Rouiancet: I'm sure you can help with that, Ensign. Are you familiar with the Butler's updated specs?

Jaz grinned, adjusting the grip on her toolbox. Small gestures, but that showed how she shifted her posture to a more talkative side of Boran Jaz.

Boran: I've studied the updated specifications, Captain. What really interested me was the work being done to improve power efficiency.

She tilted her head.

Boran: (playing with her earrings) Every ship has its own quirks, though. The manuals tell you how things are supposed to work. The engineers tell you how they actually work. So, I'd love to get more involved with getting to know this amazing gal.

Jaz looked around the Main Engineering room, pride behind her eyes to be where she was. She was sure the USS Octavia E. Butler would, in no time, feel like home to her.

Nilsen: Responses

Lahl: Absolutely, that sounds like a great idea.

Rouiancet: And speaking of great ideas, what do you want to do in your time on the Butler, Ensign? I mean, more than "nerding out," as you said.

Boran listened quietly as the Captain spoke, surprised by the question. Jaz chuckled with the Commander's comment on her nerding out. She got a little embarrassed, worried she might have come off too strong. She was very enthusiastic, but she didn't want to seem overwhelming.

Boran: Ha! Well, Captain, that is a great question. Engineering was my first love, and I want to be the kind of engineer that people trust. Of course, I'm still very young so I'm open to whatever comes my way, but engineering is a huge part of who I am. Engineering is a huge part of who I am. In some ways, more literally than most people. (Boran lifts her arm, showing the biomechanical prosthetic)
The Bajoran smiled.

Boran: So, I hope to one day become the kind of engineer people trust when everything goes wrong. The person who can walk into a disaster and say, "Okay, give me ten minutes." Honestly, if I can become that kind of officer while serving aboard a ship like this, I'll consider myself pretty lucky.

Her fingers tapped lightly against the metal plating of her biomechanical arm. A laugh escaped her. She looked around Main Engineering.

Boran: I'd also like to avoid causing any catastrophic explosions along the way. Ideally.

It was a stupid little joke, just to get some laughs. Boran takes her work seriously, but it didn't hurt being the friendly and funny type.

Nilsen/Lahl: Responses

Rouiancet: Certainly not. Only -- I'd like to know. Every one of my officers and every member of my crew is in motion, after all.

Boran: I aim for greatness in my career, Captain, but right now my focus is simpler than that. Engineering will always be my driving force, and I want to learn everything I can, help the Butler however I'm able, and earn the trust of the people I serve with.

Nilsen/Lahl: Responses

Rouiancet: Well, we all have a story, don't we? Commander Nilsen, for one, didn't expect to end up in a violet uniform as my first officer, (to Lhandon) did you?

Nilsen/Lahl: Responses

Boran smiled. She was interested to hear the stories her superiors had to share, and share some of hers if they wanted to.

Boran: Captain, I think most of us don't expect to actually end up on a ship until it happens.

A small laugh escaped her.

Boran: I always knew I wanted to be a Starfleet engineer on a vessel. That part never changed. But if you'd told younger me that would actually happen, tiny Boran would have lost their mind. (Boran glanced briefly toward her biomechanical arm). And academy cadet Boran as well. Especially because there were a few moments where that future seemed pretty unlikely.

oO Oh man, maybe that was too much, huh? Oo

Nilsen/Lahl/Rouiancet: Response

Boran: What advice would you give to a new ensign? And also, completely unrelated, but where can I get something to eat?

Nilsen/Lahl/Rouiancet: Response
