((USS Octavia E Butler - Corridor outside The Writer’s Room, Deck 8))
Awards and ribbons. Martha needed to know about these things since she would be a doctor one day and would receive her own awards. She’d stand at the podium, grinning (but not too broadly), being nonchalant, accepting the awards for being the Best Doctor. Martha thought that might be too mild. Citation for Distinguished Service. Maybe. Medal of Valor. Yes! That was it. She would be awarded for saving the lives of everyone on the ship. After a deadly gas invaded through the vent ducts, she was the only one quick enough to don a mask and race to the bridge where she flipped controls and vented the gas out into space. Then when the aliens invaded the bridge, she pulled a phaser from one of the security people (who was unconscious on the deck) and started firing. She disabled all ten; no, thirty intruders then pumped oxygen into the room to revive the captain who took charge, giving Martha a pat on the back and telling her what a good job she’d done.
Martha shook herself back to the present and leaned into the Writer’s Room, her red hair falling over her right eye. She brushed it back, decided to get it cut then decided against it. It had gotten long, past her shoulders now and was becoming a hassle. But no, she wouldn't cut it until she was forced.
Applause sounded loudly with cries of “congratulations!” and a bunch of “Well Done’s!”
Nurse’ Aid Wing turned and walked away, down the corridor to the turbo lift that would take her back to her quarters where she had lessons to complete.
