Stendhal: I'd be happy to listen if you'd like to talk about your feelings of guilt towards those you've left behind. Perhaps I've misinterpreted your situation?
Kessler: Guilt? (turning in his chair to face Karen) Is it guilt when you realize that what you thought was protecting someone was actually hurting them?
Karen raised an eyebrow slightly, a rather intriguing emotional reaction.
Stendhal: I don't know, tell me a bit more about what happened. We're here to better understand the situation and help you accept it.
Kessler: No. What I mean is, I thought I was protecting those closest to me by not telling them. When in fact not telling them was my way of ensuring that they did not talk me out of going. So is it guilt or shame I am feeling? Or both?
Jack paused as Stendahl seemed to peer into him. Something Brodie did not do, or at least not in a way that made it noticeable.
Stendhal: Perhaps both, but I understand what happened and I can say it's a understandable situation. We must accept the risks that our work pushes us to face without shame or guilt. Evidently, you wanted to go on the mission and you knew that they might try to dissuade you. What do you think?
Kessler: My own desire to find my parents nearly got TK killed. Put the entire team at risk and I hid the mission from those closest to me because I knew they would try to talk me out of it. (beat) I don’t think it is guilt I am feeling, I think I disgusted with my own actions.
Stendhal: So, you would have wished you hadn't decided to go on the mission? Are you having second thoughts about that?
Kessler: ?
Stendhal: I can't help but wonder if you regret your decision.
Kessler: ?
Karen took a sip of her tea and gazed at the steaming cup that awaited Jack on the small table. She gave him an encouraging smile.
Stendhal: Milk? Sugar? Some prefer their tea with a slice of lemon. I recommend one of those biscuits to you.
Kessler: ?
