((Jefferies Tube, Deck 15, USS Octavia E Butler))
There was a brilliant flash of light, and then the serene voice of the computer played out in the tube.
Computer: Activating Transporter.
A of the more
recent Starfleet enhancement that was being trialed out on the USS Octavia E
Butler was the Computer Assisted Emergency Transport System (CATES). The Beta
Tester Sagan-Class ship seemed to be a favourite for new crazy ideas.
An optimistic assessment was that the system was finicky; the computer didn’t consistently transport people away from perilous hazards onboard (1 in 25), nor did it usually kick in fast enough to avoid injury (1 in 1000). But, even with the abysmal performance, the admiral in front of the project had convinced the necessary powers to install since it would marginally increase ship safety.
((Sickbay, Deck 5, USS Octavia E Butler))
Computer: Patient Arriving on Biobed 4.
As Josh materialized in Sickbay, he thanked the gods that he’d made it as the 1 in 20 statistic and that there was an available biobed. He noticed that the sensation of burning had quickly dissipated.
oO I wonder if I would’ve been put on the floor if they were all full. Or, maybe that's when the computer decides you don't need saving. Oo

Herrick: (sniffing the air) Did my uniform get singed?
Toz: Response
Herrick: Burns all over?! (beat) Why don’t I feel anything?
