((Marine Intelligence Office, Gator Deck, OEB))
What had begun as a simple intelligence officers' consult had shifted into an unexpected meeting of Avander’s replacement in that role. oO I guess getting thrown right into the mix of things is one way to do it. Oo The new commander was a little brusque, but then again, Ithri could be as well. Perhaps they would suit each other fine. Avander would be out of the game going forward. At least directly.
The task at hand was an analysis of shadowy transactions across the proximate space of the Gamma Quadrant. If the reports could be trusted, something was up, but it would take a lot more intel before they could hazard a guess as to what that might be. As Avander reminded the group, it was a big universe, rare and unlikely things happen all the time. So caution was warranted.
Promontory: I think all we can do now is continue to monitor the situation and see what else we can learn.
Sh’shelor: That is why I brought this up. I wish to watch, and warn. We need to see what will happen and where it leads.
Commander Walker nodded along with Ithri’s words.
Promontory: Just so. (beat) But I’ll have to defer to our incoming Intel Director. (to Walker) It’s your call, but I concur with the Lieutenant’s assessment.
Walker: I agree.
Not that the incoming Director had to be in lockstep with Avander’s own thinking, but it did reassure him about the transition knowing that she would make at least some similar calls.
Sh’shelor: If I may, I wish to personally pursue this.
Walker: :: she nodded anew. :: I have no issue with that. :: beat :: Commander? :: she added, her eyes shifting to Promontory . ::
The older woman was growing on Avander, despite her earlier aggressive posture.
Promontory: Like I said it’s your call. (beat) But for the record, I think it’s a great idea.
Avander felt a pang of remorse at not being part of the intel team going forward. Well, perhaps he could exert a modicum of executive privilege…
Promontory: But I’d like to be kept in the loop on this matter as well. If it’s not too much trouble.
This was it—it was really happening. Avander was leaving his intelligence role. He had never really aspired to wear red, but was happy to serve wherever he was most needed. Perhaps it wouldn’t be so bad. He was sure that the brass's joke about it being all PADDwork was an exaggeration.
Sh’shelor: Response.
Walker: Is there anything else I should be aware of?
Promontory: Well, I mean, there’s a lot, but not on this matter, you made it just in time to get the comprehensive overview on the issue.
Avander’s mind flitted through the intelligence officer staff and those adjacent to the role on the ship, like Commander Hartmann. Wasn't he about Commander Walker's age? Now there might be an interesting pairing! Avander pushed the thought out of his mind and returned his focus to the present.
Walker/Sh’shelor: Response.
Promontory: The other matters can wait until morning, but I have a full orientation planned for you—both to the local intelligence team and to the ship itself.
Afterall, if Avander couldn’t take care of his crew, new and current alike, he wouldn’t make much of an executive officer and he supposed it was about time to start acting like one.
Sh’shelor/Walker: Response.
