Lt Cmdr. Avander Promontory: The First Officer Inquisition

Whether he went by rank or by familiarity, there was only one department head for Avander to check in on first. Katsim Peri had been one of the first officers he had worked with after the academy and one of the few constants in his service in the Gamma Quadrant. And with Jack again absent from the ship, she was, hands down, his closest friend here.
Nevertheless, this was an ‘official’ visit and Avander straightened his uniform before setting off the door chime. As he walked in, Peri rose to attention.
Katsim: Sir.
He waved her down and indicated that they should take seats.
Promontory: Please, no need to be so formal.
Katsim: I didn’t expect it to be you.
Promontory: Who did you expect, the Spanish Inquisition? (beat) Never mind, bad joke my father used to make. Formalities and old jokes aside, I am here on official business.
Katsim: Is something wrong?
Promontory: What? Oh, no! I mean, I don't think so. That is-- well... (taking a breath) Sorry. The first officer’s supposed to do monthly check-ins with the department heads and I thought I’d start with you. I suppose I should have made an appointment… Uh, is now a good time?
He’d definitely make appointments for the others.
Katsim: Response
Promontory: So… how’s it going…?
OK, so perhaps starting with a casual visit to his friend without an agenda was the wrong way to go about this sort of thing. As Peri answered, he tried to rally through the actual items he needed to talk with her about.
Katsim: Response
Promontory: No, I want to know how you are doing. The last mission was a lot and it’s ok to be a bit thrown off.
oO Goodness knows I have been! Oo He considered his disrupted sleep cycle.
Katsim: Response
Promontory: OK, that makes sense.
He looked around the office. It was nice, as most of them were; located conveniently adjacent to the science administration complex; it didn’t seem that Peri had had much time to decorate (had any of them really?) but perhaps her style was more muted anyway.
Promontory: And how do you think your staff did?
There were a few incidents Avander particularly was interested in hearing Peri’s perspective on, including the one-in-two Yinn and the neuroscientist who had been assaulted, but before he probed too deeply on specifics, he was interested in her overall perspective.
