(( Office of the Chief of Science, Deck 10, USS Octavia E Butler ))

Now that all the metaphorical fires from the last mission had been put out, Avander was actually looking forward to some of the more mundane responsibilities of his office. At present, that meant checking-in with the Department Heads and he started those off with Katsim Peri.

It wasn’t too long in, however, before he realized that he should have come in a little more prepared. Peri being Peri, he had to prod a little to get her to say anything about her own feelings and experiences and after she had finally admitted to being a little off, Avander was satisfied and decided not to push her too much further on that at this time.

Promontory: OK, that makes sense.

He looked around the office. It was nice, as most of them were, adjacent to the science administration complex, it didn’t seem that Peri had had much time to decorate (had any of them really?) but perhaps her style was more muted anyway.

Promontory: And how do you think your staff did?

There were a few incidents Avander particularly was interested in hearing Peri’s perspective on, including the one-in-two Yinn and the neuroscientist who had been assaulted, but before he probed too deeply on specifics, he was interested in her overall perspective.

Katsim: It could have been far worse.  Some had horrible hallucinations and I suspect they’ll go to counselling for some time.  Others fared better.  I’m uncertain about a few.

Promontory: Yes. I’ve put a request in to HQ for more counseling staff, but apparently there’s a bit of a dearth of available counselors at the moment.

It seemed like half the fleet was currently in psychological recovery mode after recent triggering events.

Promontory: What about that combined Ensign, how are they getting on?

Katsim: Yinn is…interesting.  She…he…they had…well, sort of had two perspectives.   I’m honestly impressed with how they fared through it all.

Promontory: Our experiences with combined beings like V'Len Kel aside, we should look into opinions for safely disentangling them, even if we don’t ultimately pursue that course. (beat) And I understand another of your officers was injured—a neuroscience specialist?

Katsim: Brzezinski?

Avander nodded, grateful that Peri had articulated the name he wasn’t at all confident in saying out loud.

Katsim: Considering all that happened, I think she took things well also, but I’m a little more concerned about something that did occur during the mission.

Promontory: Go on.

Avander had heard something had happened, but the reports were a little nebulous and he wanted to hear from someone who actually knew the crew involved.

Katsim: She was attacked, physically, by Counsellor Stendhal, albeit it was some strange manner of an evil twin which may affect how they work together, and I’m uncertain as to the long term ramifications in general.  I…well, perhaps it’s best if you read the report rather than get it second hand.

Promontory: Uh. I did read it, but it read like speculative fiction. I mean, an evil transporter twin? Like that episode with April? Or I think it might've been Pike.

Or maybe it was that other one.

Promontory: At any rate, I’m interested in your assessment. I’ll talk to Dr. Toz about her counselor, but I’m interested in your evaluation of how Bz… how your neuroscientist is holding up. I have a pending request for new lab equipment but some of the listed reasons seem a little beyond the scope of her purview.

Katsim: Response

Promontory: Something about continuous monitoring of crew neurological functions?

He gave a little shrug. It's not like the Federation couldn't afford whatever was requisitioned.

Katsim: Response

Promontory: Perhaps a conversation would be in order. I’m leaning on you and the other department heads to help sort these things out within your domain.

It was only fair, Avander thought. He had to supervise all 500ish crewmembers, the department heads, perhaps a few dozen. But he had every confidence in Peri, a fact he tried to highlight with an encouraging grin.

Katsim: Response
