Thoran: As I am sure you are aware, with Commander Williams’ rather rapid reassignment, the position of First Officer is currently vacant. I have been mulling over candidates from the senior staff, and after much thought, I would like to offer you the position.
Serala couldn’t remember a time when she had been so thoroughly speechless. Her jaw dropped in a wide-open gape. Thoughts even eluded her for a moment, but they returned faster than her ability to speak.
oO Me? What about Toryn? Can I do this with a new baby? Am I still going to be doing Strategic Operations? Sweet Elements, how could I say no? What is Mother going to say? What would she say if I said no? What will she say if I say yes? STOP! Say something! Oo
Serala: Uh...I...uh….um... oh, my….umm...What about?....uh….
She must really seem like an idiot right about now. Probably not the best trait for a First Officer.
Thoran: What do you say?
Serala: Au’e, daie! Yes! Most definitely yes!
I will figure out the logistics later. I probably should talk to Toryn about this though. I hope he won’t take this too hard.
Thoran: Excellent. I am most pleased. I do want to mention that I hope we shall not have a repeat of Commander Perkins?
She forced herself to calm down. Her exuberance was running the risk of waking T’Saara. Besides, the Captain would need someone who could keep her cool.
Serala: Yes. I understand. I do wonder how Commander Raga is going to take this, but we are good friends, so I am sure he will be happy for me at the very least.
Thoran: I have no doubt he will be fully supportive of you.
Serala: So, when would this become official?
Thoran: I will make the formal announcement at the award’s ceremony. However I would like you to begin your duties as soon as you feel you are able. I will admit it will seem overwhelming at first, but you will soon get into a routine.
Serala: Yes, of course, sir. The doctors still have me on light duty, but I should be able to start immediately.
The Captain took a step forward and shook her hand.
Thoran: Let me be the first to congratulate you, Number One.
oO Number One. Never thought I would be called that. I could get used to it. Oo
There was one matter that needed to be cleared up, however. She had been waiting to bring this to his attention until she had more certain information. Ishka’s test had been conclusive, but that meant she had to figure out how to deal with this situation now. Pex had told her that he was following pre-established orders of Starfleet Intelligence regarding her father, so while she felt he should still have informed the Captain, she couldn’t fault him. But that left the matter of her father.
Serala: Thank you, sir. Now, given this, I think it’s time I bring something to your attention. I was going to do this anyway, but now I think it has become even more crucial that I tell you this. I don’t want to get off on the wrong foot on my first day as First Officer.
Thoran: Response
Serala: Well, there is a man on board who I have confirmed is my long lost father who I thought was killed years ago. Apparently, he faked his death to try and protect my mother and myself from retributive acts by his enemies.
