{{Time Index: Day 9 of Shoreleave))

She’d delayed it as long as reasonably possible, not wanting to interrupt the Captain’s healing time. Having not come aboard until after and not having an ear inside Sickbay like she’d had aboard the Astraeus, she wasn’t entirely sure what had happened. From the sounds of it, though, he’d needed surgery and she understood better than anyone the toll a surgery could take. She winced, shifting the weight off of her left leg a bit before reaching up to press her thumb to the doorchime.

Thoran: Come in.

The doors parted and she paused a moment before stepping over the threshold. She caught sight of him, a soft smile turning up the corners of her lips.

Rosek: I apologize if I’m interrupting anything, sir.

Thoran: Not at all. Please take a seat.

Rosek: ::nods:: Lieutenant Commander Lael Rosek reporting for duty.

Thoran: A pleasure to have you aboard Lael. Are you okay, I notice you seem to be in a bit of discomfort?

She inclined her head. She’d seen a fair few injuries herself over the years. Though she wasn’t a security officer, she more often than not found herself in the middle of a fight she hadn’t even started. Anjar had once joked with her that she should have majored in Security. But, truth be told, she was a terrible shot with most hand weapons. She was decent with a Bat’leth though.

Rosek: Yes, sir. ::grins:: I guess I forget to take the paper target off my back before a firefight.

Thoran: Never a good idea. Looking through your service record it seems you have had quite an interesting career. One that has taken you all over the quadrant. What was the posting you enjoyed the most?

Rosek: ::grins:: Hard to say, sir. The Engineer in me wants to say the Veritas. That engine was a real beauty, even with the age of the ship. But the former first officer in me is inclined toward my last space assignment, a galaxy class. The Astraeus. ::chuckles:: I spent nearly as much time down in the bowels there as I did in my office.

Thoran: Well that does certainly sound like an experience. I note that your previous assignment was as an Instructor at Starfleet Academy. If I may, why did you decide you wanted to be out amongst the stars again?

There’d been little choice from what she’d been told when the assignment had come across her desk. Accept it or resign from active service. That would shoot to hell any chance of her getting another ship assignment and she wasn’t ready to hang up her hat just yet. She was far too young for it. Cory Stoyer had said to her more than once that it wasn’t the age, it was the mileage. Even with all the mileage, her heart proclaimed her youth proudly. She’d chase the stars as long as her body would let her.

Her experiences over the years had humbled her but hadn’t tamed her entirely. In truth, she’d missed it out here and the only problem she’d really had was the fact that her assignment had separated their family so soon. It wasn’t something she and Chythar had decided lightly. After a number of conversations, they’d agreed that, despite the risks, Maddy was old enough and mature enough to handle starship life.

Rosek: I never was big on desk jobs. ::grins:: I much prefer being out here. I didn’t sign up for Starfleet to watch everyone else have all the adventures. Besides, Maddy has proven she can handle it.

Thoran: Maddy?

Rosek: ::smiles and nods:: My daughter. She spent a bit of her childhood aboard a starship.

Thoran: Ah. I see.

She couldn’t have been more proud of the little girl if she’d been her own. It certainly wasn’t anything, in particular, Lael had done. Every bit of Maddy’s cleverness and compassion was God-given. She simply had the pleasure of nurturing the girl’s talents and watching the ripple effect. Maddy had given her and Chythar both a new reason to get up each day and keep fighting.

Rosek: ::grins:: She wants to be a doctor. Like her father. She’s recently started expressing an interest in joining Starfleet when she’s old enough.

Thoran: Really? How exciting and she is certainly in good company. You will have to speak with Doctor G’Renn, perhaps she could have a tour of Sickbay.

Rosek: ::laughs:: Maddy would be over the moon.

She could just picture the little girl’s wide-eyed wonder. Sure, Maddy had spent time in a Sickbay before with Chythar, but she hadn’t yet experienced an Intrepid-class Sickbay.

Thoran: There is actually a matter I wish to discuss with you and it is fortunate you stopped by. The Atlantis has been without a Chief Engineer for some time now. Given your experience in engineering and your prior service record, how would you feel about taking up the role?

She blinked for a moment. The offer was humbling, but hardly a surprise. She was slightly uneasy down in the bowels still given that she had only known the team down there for a little over a week. However, she’d never been one to turn her back on a good opportunity. She’d apparently done well enough before that Mei had handpicked her as his first officer. It was simply a matter of getting back in the saddle so to speak and brushing off the skills.

Rosek: ::smiles and nods:: I would be honored, sir.

Thoran: Response

Rosek: I think I have a good idea of the current projects. ::pauses:: Ensign Lephi was working on the communications logs from the station.

Thoran: Response

Rosek: ::nods:: Yes, she briefed me on the situation. It’s her top priority for the moment.

As much as she’d wanted to be a part of the project, she’d felt it was better to leave it in Lephi’s hands. After all, she knew very little of the details. Lephi certainly had the advantage in that regard.

Thoran: Response
