She sighed as she sat down at the monitor, ready to make the call. However, before she could even activate the protocols, Kol’s voice came over the comm.
Kol: =/\= Response =/\=
Rosek-Skyfire: ::nods:: =/\= Thank you, Lieutenant. Patch it through to the ready room. =/\=
A moment later, a face appeared on the screen. A sharp featured woman in her late fifties, attractive in an androgynous sort of way, the dark haired and black eyed woman looked up from her desk in Starbase 118’s logistics section and gazed into Lael’s eyes. Rear Admiral Veanila Tei folded her hands across the desk.
(( As the following communication is entirely long-range, we won’t be bothering with the =/\= symbols. ))
Tei: Commander. I have a few minutes. My staff let me know that the Astraeus was requesting priority communications. What can I do for you?
Rosek-Skyfire: We’ve detected an explosion near the Exile Colony, Admiral. I know we were assigned to monitor the sector for Valcarian vessels, but I would like permission to divert and investigate. From what I gather, we’re the nearest vessel, aside from the Nightingale.
The Betazoid Admiral furrowed her brow in a frown.
Tei: What exiles, Commander?
Rosek-Skyfire: From what I understand, Admiral, the Al-Leyan Exile faction has submitted an application for Federation membership and it is under consideration.
Tei glanced down at her terminal, tapping quickly on its screen, presumably to call up information. Her tone was clipped, a hint of impatience creeping into her voice.
Tei: Thank you for the clarification. There are many, many exiles and refugees spread throughout the Federation right now, Commander. Did you contact the Admiralty because you’re in need of additional resources?
That was fair. She should have been more specific. A note she’d file away for the next time she communicated with Command. She paused to consider the last question.
Rosek-Skyfire: ::shakes her head:: No. No additional resources are needed. Due to my personal connection with the Exile Colony, I want to ensure that all decisions, including the one to investigate this matter, are made objectively and with oversight. My first priority is Federation interests. I merely wanted the record to reflect that.
The Admiral’s frown deepened, and she fixed her gaze directly back on Rosek-Skyfire’s.
Tei: Do you feel that you are incapable of making an objective decision in this matter, Commander? Captain Delano’s reports on your fitness speak of a highly proficient officer, and I would expect you would use the other officers at your disposal to make an informed decision. If you do not think you can… :: She let the statement trail off and arched her brows. The Admiral seemed to think the implication was clear. ::
Lael relaxed slightly. It wasn’t exactly a “yes, go ahead, Commander”, but she imagined it was as close as she was going to get.
Rosek-Skyfire: ::inclines her head:: Thank you for the confirmation, Admiral. I feel I can handle this objectively and will certainly take advantage of my crew to help me weigh those decisions. I will keep Command apprised as to our progress.
Tei: Very well. I realize that most of your command experience is in a stationary outpost, Commander, but a starship is a different animal. Please make use of all of your resources. If feasible, I recommend dispatching auxiliary craft to investigate your first assignment, or the colony, whichever is a better use of your resources. Is there anything else?
Lael made a mental note of the suggestions, knowing she would likely need them.
Rosek-Skyfire: ::shakes her head:: No, Admiral.
Tei: Very well, Commander. Starbase 118 out.
Immediately, the Admiral’s image winked out.
Lael exhaled a sigh, running her hands through her hair. Her first major mission. This went beyond random patrols. She still didn’t have all the details about what had happened with the Colony, but she had the feeling this wasn’t going to be a run-of-the-mill emergency medical situation.
Rising from her chair, she strode across the ready room and out onto the bridge.
((Bridge, Deck 1, USS Astraeus))
Her thoughts occupied by the conversation she’d just had with Admiral Tei, she strode toward the center of the bridge before facing Lieutenant Caldwell.
Rosek-Skyfire: Our mission has been approved. Have Helm set a course and engage at Warp 10.
Caldwell: Response
Kol: Response
Rosek-Skyfire: Estimated time of arrival, Lieutenant?
Kol: Response
Rosek-Skyfire: ::nods:: Very good. ::to Caldwell:: We don’t have much time. Have all department heads report to the Captain’s Mess in an hour. That should give all departments enough time to gather themselves.
She paused, moving to depress the button on the chair that would open the ship-wide channel.
Rosek-Skyfire: =/\= This is Acting Captain Rosek to all hands. We’ve detected an explosion near the Langosta Nebula and have received orders from Command to investigate. All departments, finalize preparations for emergency aid as soon as possible. Rosek out. =/\=
A moment later, she cut the comm.
Caldwell: Response
Rosek-Skyfire: ::pauses:: Yes. Some of the more junior officers would benefit from an informational briefing to become more familiar with the Al-Leyan species, particularly the history between the two factions, so they know what to expect. I will speak with Ambassador Charta-Von about leading it so we can focus on meeting with the department heads. Work with the Ambassador to gather and distribute as much information as possible to the attendees ahead of time.
Caldwell: Response
Rosek-Skyfire: ::to the bridge as a whole:: All right, everyone. Let’s get to work.
Caldwell / Alentonis / Tam / Sulok: Responses
((OOC: Feel free to sim your character’s reactions to everything. ))
