((Main Bridge, Deck One, USS Astraeus))
(( Five minute time skip ))
Gwen'ora focused on her work as her hands danced across the controls. She almost had it. Things were clear enough where she could scan easily around them but she needed the distance still. So she still worked, trying various changes. It wasn't long before the Ba'ku woman grinned broadly at her console as she tested a scan on the Sol station.
Her smile fell as her emerald gaze searched the scans she was getting in as dread sat solidly into her gut.
Mei’konda: Engineering is clear; Lieutenant Ral and his teams should be able to retake their stations. What do you haave for me, Lael? Ensign Tasen?
Rosek-Skyfire: ::shakes her head:: According to the scans, it’s not good, Captain.
Gwen turned her chair around to face them before speaking. She looked paler than normal and with a look of dread and worry on her face.
Tasen: I assume the Borg situation did not just happen to us sir...the fleet at Sol station...they...
Gwen couldn't bring herself to say it but thankfully the Captain caught on and seemed to snag her readings.
Mei’konda: The fleet… the whole Home Fleet is attacking Sol Station. If that staation goes down, Earth’s planetary shields fall… Matthews, Caldwell. Do you haave an estimate for how long Sol Station can hold up under that kiind of attack?
Matthews / Caldwell: Responses
The woman finally turned back her her station as she continued to run scans on the fleet, seeing if anything popped up that would show that they were snapping out of it. But no...just firing on Sol station.
Mei’konda: Then we haave eight minutes to regain control of this ship. One to maake it to Earth. And under another eiight to evacuaate as many as we can from Sol Station. Perhaaps, on the way, we can fiind some way to reinforce Earth’s shields usiing our own power sources. Opiinions?
Rosek-Skyfire: With most of the Borg contained in the Brig and other secure areas, it’s just a matter of getting systems back under our purview. I’ll keep working with the respective department heads. ::pauses:: As far as more effective means for neutralizing the Borg elements– ::to Caldwell and Matthews:: Isn’t there a way we can gather larger groups rather than a couple at a time? A way to boost the transporters?
Matthews / Caldwell: Responses
Mei’konda: The common aspect is … Their age?
Rosek-Skyfire / Matthews: Response
Tasen: It makes more sense what is going on at Sol Station...pretty much every ship has several young crew, right?
oO Thank goodness for not being young. I wonder if it would affect my brother though since he's young...like 45 if I remember correctly. Oo
Caldwell: Responses
Mei’konda: Then… we must fiind a way to block that signal. No matter what it takes. If we can prevent that siignal from penetraating our hull and reaching our people, can we stop it from affectiing them?
Gwen turned in her chair as she shifted, crossing her arms over her chest as she listened. Thoughtfully she glanced towards her console and then back to the senior officers. She saw them gathering at the large display and pushed off the chair she had been in before making her way towards gathered officers, standing respectfully to the side, watching curiously.
Rosek-Skyfire: ::pauses:: I would suggest the Reskari, sir, but we couldn’t possibly coat the hulls in time. It would be an exercise in futility.
Matthews: Response
Tasen: Changing the modulation of the scanners worked against the signal that we were getting interference from...If we could do something similar with jamming the frequency or something...
Caldwell: Responses
Mei’konda: Clearly, it haas no trouble penetraating our hull, our structural integrity field, and our conventional energy shielding. What if we change our modulaation? Alter the frequency of our metaphasic shielding? Ensign Tasen, can your analysis be used to fiind a counter frequency?
Tasen: ::Nodding thoughtfully as she shifts her arms to her side, her eyes shifting to the screen.:: Yes sir, I believe so. I have the work done at least for the sensors. It would be adapting the data.
Matthews / Caldwell: Response
Rosek-Skyfire: All good suggestions. Anything workable?
Tasen: Something like a jamming signal maybe? Blocking it best we can...but sending something out towards the epicenter to inhibit it from affect our ship maybe...
The idea wasn't a wholly formed one but one of arguing radio waves. This wasn't exactly her speciality but she had a good understanding enough to give it a whole hearted shot.
Matthews / Caldwell: Response
Mei’konda: It’s a staart, anyway. Other suggestions?
Rosek-Skyfire: My only other thought would be to determine the frequency of the signal to see if we could also possibly cancel it out with radio waves. A double measure. Redundant, but redundancies can’t hurt at the moment. Not when we want to be extra sure this works.
Matthews: Response
Tasen: I think we are on similar thought processes, Commander. Though what if we turned that signal internal instead of external? Sent the counter frequency within our ship to disrupt the signal to our crew.
Caldwell: Responses
Rosek-Skyfire: ::nods:: Right. We’ll have to be careful about power expenditures. We’re going to need all of it we can get it we’re going to face off against a fleet of our own ships. The Astraeus is a tough old bird, but some of those ships are armed to the teeth.
Mei’konda: Agreed, then. Lieutenant Caldwell, get us to Earth as quickly as you can.
Caldwell: Response
Gwen nodded and looked at the others briefly before she too returned to her station. This...was one hell of a day but she was going to do the best she could in the seat she got trusted in. She had to. Besides...even if she didn't know it at the time, Gwen now understood that days like today where they raced against all odds to save people...was part of what she had signed up for.
oO The Enterprise had done it for the Ba'ku...I really should have known Oo
The proximity alarm had Gwen quickly tapping along her console, breaking up the readings on the screen before her of what the sensors had caught. The reading of the ship had Gwen pausing as a small actual smile hit her face. It wasn't the Enterprise she had seen all those years ago, that had been the E. But it had to be the same group at the helm, right?
Mei’konda: NCC-1701… D. That’s the Enterprise. Picard’s first Enterprise. What in the hell? What is she doing out here? Is that a gliitch?
Rosek-Skyfire: ::grins from the Engineering station:: No, sir. That’s her all right.
Tasen: Definitely not a Glitch, Sir. Is it terrible that this makes me feel a bit better about the odds we are racing towards?
Matthews: Response
Caldwell: Responses
Rosek-Skyfire: Looks like our chances just got a little bit better.
Gwen while grinning had shifted over to the science station so that she could keep the sensor one focused on it's primary duty. As the chatter had gone on around them, Gwen had been working furiously on aligning the data. They had a decent frequency setting that was allowing their sensors to work well. Scanning from here to the Sol Station, which was what was needed right now.
Taking that data, Gwen started inputting that into the computer. First was the metaphasic shielding. See if adapting that to the settings she had with the sensors did anything. Next time she got the chance to bug anyone on adapting shielding more she was going to. But for now...it was her job. Gwen was working through the inputting the settings quickly when the beep from the door to her left sounded.
oO Sevan? Is that you? Oo
The Ba'ku knew that Ral was not coming to the bridge but Sevan had been a mystery since her earlier comms to the bridge. When no mental nudge from her friend came, Gwen swallowed nervously.
Rosek-Skyfire: Captain! Unknown persons are overriding the Bridge lockout!
Mei’konda: Response
Rosek-Skyfire: Take cover!
Gwen was not prepared for the drones to just march onto the bridge. She quickly spotted faces she'd seen around the ship during the time she'd been here since joining at the start of their last Shoreleave. Last time that had made her freeze because it had been Ensign Tam. This time she knew better. Being right in view of the turbot lift they had used made Gwen innate aware of her own mortality at this point as she quickly dived from her chair, putting it between her and the Borg, fluidly pulling her phaser as she ducked. Though she realized that she doubted the chair would provide much cover in the way of anything.
Rosek-Skyfire: Maximum stun only! Draw their fire away from the Captain!
Matthews / Caldwell: Response
So it was up to the Captain to do what they had done before but then again he had been doing that since that first fight. So if anyone could do it quickly before anyone turned into holey cheese it was the Captain who had been sending his officers to the cargo bay for the last while.
Gwen didn't verbally answer but did physically as she peeked from behind her chair and fired twice, her phaser on the setting indicated at the drones. Overall her cover was fine but as a shot hit her chair and she heard the sizzle of the fabric.
oO Oh I should have picked better cover Oo
The woman peeked out from her cover and fired at the borg again, trying to time hers opposite of some of the shot sounds from her left so that they just constantly had fire on the drones. Gwen moved to duck behind cover when she saw who she thought was Fianna raise a rifle towards where she was and fire. The shot went wide past and hit an upper screen of her console. The mini boom that resounded due to it all sat Gwen slamming to her left into the rail hard. Gwen caught herself, grabbed the rail, and ducked under it as she rushed to a wall she could somewhat duck beside.
With a small wall to help keep her from getting hit again, Gwen shot back every now and then with the others. Aiming to protect each other as much as they could form this onslaught. That fear from earlier that had held her frozen wasn't there. Instead was just heart pounding adrenaline that 100% kept her from immediately realizing she hit that railing hard.
Gwen didn't know how long it was that they stood there firing but finally the last borg was shimmered away by the transporters. Gwen rotated and put her back to the wall for a moment, taking in a deep breath that ached for some reason on her left side. The woman furrowed her brow a bit but pushed it away. Later once adrinalline wore off she'd probably be a pained bean. For now. She had a job to do.
Rosek-Skyfire: Status report? Everyone okay?
Mei’konda: Response
Matthews / Caldwell : Response
It made her feel better to hear everyone sound off as Gwen finally pushed herself off the wall and walked to her console. She could see where shots had impacted, and the one screen that was just gone, but both the science station and sensor station were still on and functioning mostly. She gave a relieved light sigh at the state of it. At least she could keep working on the project they had interrupted. Though as she took breaths and calmed down an ache in her side throbbed lightly for now.
Tasen: My station is functioning. I am okay.
Her chair felt nice to sink into as she did so, aiming to begin working back on what she had been doing. If she could get the metaphasic shielding modified...she could figure out if the other worked.
Gwen let herself sink into the work as she re-inspected what she had done prior to the phaser fight before she continued inputting the chases to the aray. On her initial attempt, the computer sent her a message warning of missing parameters that would result in the shields going down, so with guidance from the computer, Gwen edited her changes and once again attempted the swap. This time without a sound and without a computer warning, it was just waiting on a confirmation. The Ba'ku woman spun her chair with a small hiss of pain from the throb that the movement sent from the right side of her rib cage. She grinded her teeth for a moment before she spoke up once she was composed.
oO Did I seriously get hurt from slamming into a rail during a massive phaser fight? I'm either lucky...or going to get snickered at. Oo
Tasen: Captain, I've input the adaptations to the metaphasic shields. I'm ready to push the changes and see if it helps when you are Sir.
Mei'konda: Response
Gwen nods and sweeps back around, this time prepped for the pain this time from her side. But she pushed past it and started doing the final steps before she pushed the changes to the shielding, glad that the computer didn't grumble about changes or yell that she broke everything.
Tasen: Yes Sir. The changes are active now. I just hope it functions enough...
Mei'konda: Response
Matthews / Caldwell / Rosek-Skyfire: Response
Tasen: If it looks like we need to do more, I think I can do the internal signal and try to make it resonate to attempt to cancel the signal that's causing so much trouble. I worry about the drain on our systems.
Mei'konda: Response
Matthews / Caldwell / Rosek-Skyfire: Response
