Meris: Lieutenant, I may have misunderstood...

K'Wara: As a matter of fact, I didn’t. ::leans against the console:: I got it from the Operations Center of the Artemis, from my desk. Chief Vailani wants the input from experienced pilots on the request list so Captain MacKenzie and Commander Munro have a better nuance in terms of how many of these requests we can possibly complete, because frankly, there’s too many of them for us to realistically do all of them.

It was an experience watching the Ensign Helm Officer digest the information they’d just been given. Tamio didn’t necessarily blame them for that - they had just, rather loudly by the way, announced to the entire Bridge that they had intentions to report a senior officer for gross misconduct - and that was quite the announcement on your first shift out of the Academy. Granted, Tamio hadn’t even done that, but they vividly remembered the numerous instances of hazing and ‘fun’ had on the expense at much too uptight Ensigns over their years of service, and they didn’t blame Meris for their response at all.

Remembering their own time as an Ensign (one that frankly they were surprised they’d made it through without more permanent stains on their record than a botched transporter incident and several months of physical therapy), Tamio figured Meris probably had the right idea.

Meris: ::recovering:: Of course, Lieutenant. I will... take care of this immediately. I’ll provide a thorough and complete report - in triplicate. I’m honored. I’m equal to the task. And I won’t let you down, sir.

And there was the immediate overcorrection.

K’Wara: Relax, Meris. I’m not here to haze you, or bait you, or any such thing. Not my style. I didn’t get to see you perform as a Helm Officer during your Academy Cruise, so I wanted to see what your opinion would be on some of these maneuvers, to see what kind of pilot you are. ::slight pause:: Though, if you’d rather fantasize about sitting in the Captain’s chair, that’s fair. It is a nice chair. ::conspiratorial tone:: I heard there’s heating in the seat.

Meris: No sir, I appreciate that Lieutenant Vailani wants my input, and I’ll not let them down.

Tamio nodded. Granted, Chief Vailani hadn’t expressed any desire for specific individuals’ inputs - just ‘experienced pilots’ - which was why it had landed on Tamio’s desk. Regardless, it had been a good many years since Tamio had last been in charge of navigating, and never of a Luna class vessel. It would make good practice for Meris to look over the requests, certainly, and Tamio could always give it a once-over before handing the PADD back to the Chief.

K’Wara: Oh, don’t be so sure. Calling Chief Vailani ‘strict’ seems to be a vast understatement, but I believe in you. ::gestures to the PADD:: Be realistic, but ambitious. You won’t be flying with autopilot in a no-traffic sector while on this ship. Understood?

That was the closest Tamio had probably gotten to sounding even remotely like their rank dictated, and it made their skin crawl. They firmly disliked talking shop while off-duty, but Meris was one of the last Cadets they’d taken through the Academy, and they wouldn’t accept any shoddy piloting on the Artemis from them.

Meris: Thank you, Lieutenant. I’d best get to it. And again, my apologies for the misunderstanding, sir.

Happy that Meris understood, Tamio smiled and opened their arms in a relaxed manner, as if to wave away their apology.

K’Wara: Not the first reprimand I’m the recipient of, unearned or not, and it won’t be the last. Happy first shift, Meris. And good wind.

With that, Meris took the helm seat and Tamio walked to the turbolift to get moving on to the rest of their day off. But just before they entered the turbolift, they couldn’t resist a quick look back towards the dutiful Ensign, who had immediately focused in on the PADD like it contained the secrets of the universe.

oO So uptight... Oo Tamio remembered the few other members of the Artemis crew that they’d met thus far, and grinned at the thought. oO They’re gonna fit right in. Oo
