((Security Training Facilities - Security Center - USS Artemis-A))
So, a phaser drill it was to be. Gavrin could live with that. He knew he wouldn't impress the security officer with his skills but as long as he didn't completely embarrass himself, he'd be fine.
Cole: No, Just you and I.
Cole: I won’t bite, ::beat:: promise.
Tarsan: Well then I won't cry, I promise.
Cole: We’re going to start simple, standard target practice. From there I’ll assess what you need to improve on and guide you as needed.
Gavrin was hyper-aware of the Lieutenant moving behind him, holding his phase stiffly as he waited for the simulation to begin.
Cole: Computer, Run Standard Phaser target range.
Cole: When you're ready Ensign, I want you to fire three shots at each target.
Tarsan: Understood.
Gavrin took a breath before firing at the targets as instructed. His feet were too close together, his wrist too stiff, his shoulders too square. He hit the closest target with two of the three shots, clipped the middle, and completely missed the last.
For a moment, he considered throwing the phaser. He'd probably have had more luck.
He didn't need to be a Betazoid to know what Cole felt about his performance, but it made it doubly worse that he was.
Cole: I see some things that could immediately improve your score. Your stance needs to be like this, May I?
Gavrin stepped back in relief as Cole stepped forwards to show him how it was done. He watched her form carefully, trying to fix her posture in his mind.
Cole: Stance and breathing can resolve most people's comings when it comes to firing a phaser. Let's see you try it again.
Tarsan: Okay, let's see...
Gavrin stepped forwards again, trying to mirror Natasha's movements. This time his stance was wide enough, though one foot was turned inwards, unbalancing him.
Tarsan: Like this?
Cole: Response
Gavrin winced and nodded, turning his foot back out, surprise flitting across his face at the difference it made to his stability. He took a breath in and let it out - just as Natasha had done - before firing at the targets again.
The closest and mid-range targets took all three shots this time, though only one landed on the far target, and his grouping was almost non-existent. An improvement to be sure, but he had a mountain to climb.
Tarsan: That... felt a lot better! Thanks!
Cole: Response
Tarsan: ::smiling wryly:: Should I assume that the recommendation will be to keep me away from phasers until my aim improves?
Cole: Response
