(( OPS Center, Deck 5,
USS Artemis-A ))
Jaseb was in a good mood. His three days down on
Betazed was a nice time to collect his thoughts, and the time spent
with Damien definitely helped to find other thoughts. But with
return to duty, and shore leave rotation, he was quickly returned to
reality. COO and ACOO was both on leave, and Jaseb was a single officer in
department on the stack of PADDs containing a whole department desk. And yeah, that stack of PADDs slowly grew from
ACOO's table down on the ground. Technically Jaseb should go through
this mountain at his station, but with ACOO out, he did not saw any
damage to requisition his office in OPS Center. A little piece of
heavenly silence was an additional bonus, but he did that mainly because
there at least had a space to organize the requisition, transfers, transport and
distribution requests and reports.
Bell alarm sounded in the
room, when Jaseb was in the middle of requisitioning for a new
Helm Officer, as Ensign Kadar was transferred after...
yeah.
Chevalier: Come in.
Door opened and the
person who entered, Jaseb expected,
but on the other hand, he was quite surprised she got here that quickly.
A Bajoran woman in a gold uniform entered “his” office and stood at
attention directly facing him, while he sat behind the desk.
Ral:
Chief Petty Officer Ral Shaw, report as ordered, sir.
Jaseb
had to admit that she looked very good for being fifty. But then
again, what did he know about Bajorans and their physiology...so, he
nodded and pointed to the chair.
Chevalier: At ease,
Chief. Have a seat.
Chief Ral stood at ease, but she
didn't sit down, she gave Jaseb a judgmental look instead.
Ral:
No, thank you. Frankly, I'm used to standing while in the presence of
the officer.
Jaseb
sighed and put down the PADD he was holding. He took another, from
the pile he called “Unhuman Resources”, and opened her personal
file. Twelve pages just in summary was encouraging, but he read her
whole personal file before he - as he was given that godly authority
to prepare Artemis for set sail – asked SB118 for her transfer
onboard of Artemis.
When he saw her now, he regretted a little
that he didn't at least call her first or contacted her superior on
SB118, but on the other hand, when he saw her name and file in
“transfer pool”, something told him even then that she was
exactly the type of SNCO that the crew on board Artemis needed.
Chevalier:
Before I give you your transfer documentation, I just want to ask...
I've been reviewing the fitreps pool for the transfer personnel, and
frankly you're a puzzle. Delta Cross recipient during Dominion War,
top ratings from Constable Odo in DS9, who clearly thought the world
of you, but then a whole series of increasingly negative reports from
your superiors on DS7, and in 238403 you were court-martial for
"persistent insubordinate behavior and assault of the officer”.
238510 reinstated into Starfleet service, again, great reports on
Saratoga until 239012, where after a series of other negative reports
you were demoted in 239103 following disciplinary infraction with
fellow NCO in time of ship's Red Alert. And then 239804 you receive
Rear Admiral letter of recommendation addressed to SBOP to promote
you into rank of Chief Petty Officer for “gallantry and leadership
qualities in accordance with the highest Starfleet tradition” after
four years in rank with less than grey fitreps - which I could more
accurately summarize as "she works nine to five and up to the
level of her paycheck, nothing more, nothing less". So the
question is, Chief Ral, who are you?
Ral: Who am I? I'm a
warrior, I'm a soldier. As topics of Lieutenant Farrow and Petty Officer Gallows.
Neither of those men deserved my respect, so they didn't get
any.
Jaseb furrowed his brows. He read the official
records, but the real human dynamics and events in the background,
which lead to two serious disciplinary actions, were what he wanted
to hear.
Chevalier: Can be a little more specific?
Ral:
Farrow was a Orion Syndicate sellout, a piece of garbage unworthy of
the uniform. Gallows was a martinet who tried to micro-manage shift
personnel like it was some balky piece of machinery.
Jaseb
sighed. Both personal files for those Starfleet officers were
sealed as both were deceased, so he couldn't get any details. But the tone which she gave to the evaluations of her former fellow officers was
quite all-seeing.
Chevalier:
Hard to dispute either assessment. And what about me and this ship?
Don't hold back just because
I've got a pulse.
Ral: Based on your personnel file, you're a
step up, Ensign. But that doesn't change the fact
that you've brought in an outsider to clean up our mess in your own department. Or the impression that you think too much about yourself,
because you are too junior to hold this office. So I guess you took
it as your own in the absence of your rightful ACOO, as if it were
keys to a new shuttle that your father bought for you as reward for
your good school grades.
Jaseb
grabbed two PADDs from the table and handed them over to Chief Ral
with a sour smile.
Chevalier: You certainly don't
disappoint, Chief. So how would you like to be our new Bosun?
Shaw
took the PADDs and checked what was stated in her orders. Chevalier
took a ring box, opened it and put it on the table.
Ral:
Sir?
Chevalier: One thing I learned from my father and from my
superiors in Starfleet before they "tossed me the keys," is
that a starship needs a strong right arm. Leadership also needs to
send a message to this crew that whatever happened during our
encounter is gone and morale needs to be restored, even if
the truth is what happened will stay with them no matter what, and I hope you as a military
veteran will understand. I'm no Sisko, but I intend to give our
enlisted crew their pride back. As this is an OPS decision and we are
missing bosun. Then, by the decision of the officer in charge of USS
Artemis-A OPS at stardate 240101.13, I'll let you carry this torch.
Deal?
Shaw
looked at Jaseb like he is Icarus who will shortly burn alive facing
to the sun, and die horribly during the fall who was waiting for him.
Even so, she snapped the box with the Boatswain pin and took it.
Jaseb smiled and nodded.
Chevalier: In that case, Chief,
dismissed. You have work to do...
(( ACOO Office, OPS
Center, Deck 5, USS Artemis-A ))
(Shortly after Chief
Ral departure)
When the doorbell rang a second time, Jaseb was in the middle of his frozen
“tranquilizer”, what he called his drink. He returned the glass to
the replicator and let his “moment” disappear.
Chevalier:
Come in.
Door opened, and a person entered. Jaseb turned with
the cup of coffee to face a newcomer. Elven in red uniform was
quite... surprising. Jaseb stared at him a second longer to recognize
his rank, when a newcomer started talking.
Z’Vahme: Pardon
the intrusion. I’m Ensign Z’Vahme, and I’ve been assigned to
the Artemis…
oO So Vulcan... Z'Vahme... Z'Vah... Oo
Jaseb
heard that name, or read it. By the rank, uniform and unknown face to
Jaseb, he was obviously replacement for departed helm officer, ensign
Kadar, so the only reason why he came was for the orders to the XO,
as he was probably a member of few which was transferred at the last
moment for the paperwork to be processed before they left their post
or Academy. Jaseb – who looked still quite steamrolled - crossed
over to the office table and sat down behind it. Not like he would be
tired, just, like he was overwhelmed with something, not with work –
even by the state of the table, he had plenty - but something
else.
Chevalier: Welcome aboard, ensign Z'Vahme. Ensign
Chevalier, acting OPC in charge.
Jaseb put the cup of coffee
on the table and started rummaging through the PADDs on the
table.
Z’Vahme: Pleased to meet you.
Chevalier:
So, Mr. Z'Vahme, Academy or transfer?
Z’Vahme:
Previously I was at Denali Station.
Jaseb
shrouded and stopped searching the pile he was reorganizing to find
the Ensign Z'Vahme personal file and orders.
Chevalier:
So, different pile... Sorry Ensign, today is quite rushed with
basically everything.
Z'Vahme: Response?
Jaseb started
rummaging through another pile of PADDs, but shortly he find the ones
he was looking for.
Chevalier: So, Ensign Z'Vahme, age 30,
Science Officer stationed at Denali
station...nadinadinada...transferred to USS Artemis-A to take over the
position of ship's helm officer. Yes, that's you. This PADD is for
the XO or the captain, whomever you will report your arrival on board.
I can recommend you to visit XO if you were not instructed otherwise, he's
your boss in-line supervisor, so it's good to keep him happy. ::hands
over the first PADD:: This is your command code and onboarding
manual, plus your... wait a moment, this is not right...
Z'Vahme:
Response?
Jaseb put the other PADDs on the table and started
typing something into the computer.
Chevalier: I will... yeah
::smiles as he turns back to Z'Vahme:: So, where we ended. Yes, Your
command codes, your on-boarding manual and information about your
assigned quarters. You are a happy man, because as it looks, you won
the vacant room in the quarters with me.
Z'Vahme:
Response?
Jaseb handed over the second PADD and took the
third.
Chevalier: And this is PADD for XO. You can read this
one, XO eyes and code only. It's your personal file, so I recommend
you not to lose this. Questions?
Z'Vahme: Response
