Bergmen: I'm fine, but I'll wait for the ventilation to clean the air. The Klingon cuisine avenged.

Sadar: Take a seat, Ensign.

He did as asked.

Imril gave Berman a small smile of sympathy for his digestive troubles. Some of their own culinary explorations didn't end very well, either.

Bergmen: Did I miss something important?

Filistrien: Yes Sir.

Bergmen: ::to Sadar:: Will we be on the dig site only as ground and diplomatic support, or are we expected to go underground with the archaeology team?

The Doctor raised a hand.

Sadar: No one is going underground, not us nor the Klingons. Since no subterranean echo survey has been completed yet, we have no confirmation that it’s safe to go to the lower levels yet. The Klingons will be handling the areas of the exposed facility that requires heavy excavating gear, while we excavate the already fully exposed western wing.

Bergmen: ::to Imril:: We should add more water to our kit, as midday can be quite hot.

Imril: ::to Bergman:: Way ahead of you. Water’s not something I’m going to forget after marching through the Meirashi jungle.

Lyara and Xandeus shared a look.

Lyara: Filistrien, when you do a background check can you send any information you find?

Xandeus nodded readily.

Filistrien: Yes Sir. It shall be on your PADD before the shuttle is cleared to depart tomorrow.

Lyara: Sounds good, I recommend you brush up on your Klingon.

Filistrien: jIyaj. (I understand)

The Doctor exhaled uneasily.

Sadar: You have your assignments. We’ll set out at 0700 tomorrow for the Klingon landing site, where we’ll split into our respective teams. Dismissed.

(((Timeskip: The following morning)))

(( Near the Western Wing, Klingon Prison Ruins, Wallace Forest))

Gila’s team and the Klingons hadn’t walked through the forest together for very long before they split off from each other, aiming for separate sections of the exposed ruins.

There was a certain pungency in the air, courtesy of the local flora. Certain trees had leaves that were roughly circular in shape, slightly longer than they were wide, colored a dark and warning green. The leaves’ veins were darker still, creating the appearance of countless furrowed brows, no doubt adding to their ‘angry’ reputation. The odor these trees were giving off wasn’t particularly offensive to Imril’s nose, but it wasn’t particularly pleasant either.

Sadar: Ensign Bergmen, did the colonists mention anything about how they intend to move the treeline?

Bergmen: Response

Sadar: N-No, it’s about what Ensign Imril said yesterday. Perhaps that is something we can accomplish in the interim. Would that be possible with the equipment we have on hand or on the Griffin?

Imril: Definitely. Starting with a tractor beam for hauling any felled trees that need moving. And we should be able to work up some tools for cutting the trunks or digging up the soil to get at the roots. Power tools and two-hand items that could be replicated as kits and assembled for use, I mean.

Bergmen: Response

Sadar: It’s not something to do right now, but it may service us if tempers start flaring to divide and conquer. ::looks around:: Also, we don’t want to, uhhh, ‘anger the trees’?

Imril: ::Waving at the forest:: Hello, trees! Nice to meet you! ::To Sadar and Bergmen:: From what I was able to read on this particular species last night, what we’re smelling right now is just a warning given off by the leaves. Any damage to them, anywhere, will result in the trees expressing something truly noxious. A chemical mixture contained in their sap. A natural defense against insects and grazers. It’s sticky, too. Get any on you and you’ll stink for a day at least.

Sadar/Begmen: Response

Imril: The least smelly option for moving them would probably be digging them out and uprooting them whole. But then, I’m not a botanist or a colonist. Maybe there’s a neutralizing agent that I’m not aware of. And I don’t know how intertwined their roots are either, now that I think about it.

Sadar/Bergmen: Response

Imril took a swig from a canteen and looked ahead. The trees were thinning out in the direction that the group was headed. The team’s section of ruin had to be nearby. Giggy anticipation wriggled through the ensign’s skin. Or maybe that was a reaction to whatever it was the trees were giving off.

Sadar/Bergmen: Response
