((Karnack Engineering - Deck 4 - USS Karnack))

After spending over a week thinking she may be the only one to survive the crash, it was overwhelming to be surrounded by so many people. Breys was not a social butterfly, and to make matters worse both the captain and the chief science officer were directly in front of her. She stood at attention with such resolute focus that her knees began to shake. Now wasn’t the time to do something stupid.

MacKenzie: A semi-functioning warp core is a good place to start. What should we prioritize first?

Munro: Getting the shield emitters to mimic the properties of Faraday Cage long enough to get us out of the system is going to be no mean feat. Especially since we have no operational systems. But I think we can do it - if we can figure out a way to replicate the Faraday Cage effectively. Brexis, Bergmen, Breys, we’ll need your help getting this set up.

This was an interesting idea, using the specific frequency of the Maelstrom’s interference should allow them to block out almost all of its effects. The ship could function like it was supposed to and they could get off this rock.

Brexis: ::Nodding.:: I’ll do what I can.

Breys: I have a few ideas, I think the information we need might already be in the computer banks from our first encounter with the Maelstrom.

Bergmen: Response

It seemed like the group was finally getting to be Starfleet again. Working with basic supplies for over a week had left everyone missing the feeling of duranium, and making a starship sing felt like day one of the academy.

MacKenzie: Even if we did get it set up, we need other functional systems to actually make us space-faring.

Munro: That’s true. Even if the shield emitters work, we won’t get far with the Karnack in this state.

This was also a fact. Breys wasn't an engineer, but she had heard strings of expletives from many engineers that would describe this ship.

Jovenan: Force fields and inner bulkheads can keep some of the pressure in, but we should try to close some of the breaches. The less we have to rely on force fields, the more we can use power in other systems. And the less we have to fear about them failing.

Every order given raised D’tin’s spirits. It was hard not to feel hopeful when you had a crew, all of them working to get you out of this. This wasn’t a fight for survival anymore, it was a mission. There was a hum of people around her now, all of them friends. The room felt warm, like a holiday celebration.

Silveira: I concur

Munro: Agreed. Bring Storm and Bancroft with you, and get those holes fixed. But be careful, the Things are still out here, and as it gets dark, they’ll get more daring.

Breys was content with not being on the crew that went outside. She didn’t feel amazing about anyone being out there though.

MacKenzie: Some of the upper decks should provide relative security from the creatures - I haven’t seen them climb yet.

K’Wara: We won’t get very far with Main Engineering in this state, either, Sirs. While the warp core is stable, it’s hardly safe for use at the moment.

Munro: In its current state the warp core power distribution would likely cause a cascade failure. We’re more likely to blow up the ship and this corner of the planet than get off this planet. Tamil, work with Imril to find a workaround, I don’t think I need to tell you how important it is :: pauses :: Cole and Jaran, you’re temporarily reassigned as technicians ::smiles:: Congratulations.

Whatever they could do to avoid being a warp bomb.

Cole: ::nodded:: Grandpa Dorian, would be so proud.

There were many heartfelt reunions about her, the closest, and the only one she could hear, was in a group around Cole. A real life group hug was taking place.

Bancroft: ::muffled against her shoulder:: If you’re searching me for weapons, I’ve only got the survival knife on me. ::beat:: You okay?

Cole: I’m … ::pause:: Yeah. Just… tired.

Breys could only sympathize with this. Sleep had been sparse and full of terrors the last week and a half.

Bancroft: ::earnestly:: I’m so happy to see you. You good? No injuries? No internal bleeding you’re heroically ignoring for the sake of morale?

K’Wara: I’m glad to see you’re both alright. ::smiles:: Despite the circumstances.

Cole: We had our challenges ::glances to Charlotte:: but we managed.

Brexis: Managed… Yeah. We did something that’s for sure. And we will keep managing as long as we have to.

K’Wara: I’ll hold you to that. I’m not quite ready to put down roots here yet. ::slight grin: Too drab.

Cole: I’ve had my fill of this unsettling place.

Brexis: Ain’t that the damn truth…

Cole: ::to Charlotte:: … Be careful.

The group seemed so much more confident now that they had the space to laugh and see their friends. For the first time it felt like they were going to get off this planet.

((Computer Core Upper Level - Deck 5 - USS Karnack))

If you’ve seen one computer core, you’ve seen almost all of them. This wasn’t an exception. Rows and rows of isolinear chips with several access panels scattered across several levels. The climb down the jefferies tube was the most unfamiliar portion.

Munro: I think we need to establish how we can insulate key systems from the Maelstrom. Propulsion and shields should be the priority. And connect systems to the warp core.

MacKenzie: Agreed. Shields, propulsion, structural integrity and life support… not necessarily in that order.

Brexis: I will help however I can.

Breys: Well step one is get the computer core itself online, right?

This felt like a stupid question, of course that was the first step. There was no chance that anything would be accessible till then.

Bergmen: Response

Dark things began clattering against the hull outside of the ship. The sound of scraping and clawing made a cold sweat drip down Brey’s spine.

Munro: Let’s make it quick. That sounds closer than I’d like.

MacKenzie: Think they can get through duranium?

Breys shivered. It was another moment for Bajoran prayers to wander their way back into her thoughts.

Brexis: Let’s hope we don’t have to find out. ::wincing:: They are too close. ::gesturing:: Let's get this done.

Breys: Yeah, let’s try to get this up and running before they get here.

Munro/Bergmen: Response

The captain nodded and walked towards the core.

MacKenzie: Right. Someone give me a hand with this.

Breys yet again clambered forward. This was an area she knew well, data management was half her job.

Brexis: Where do we even start?

Breys: Where are the plasma conduits that connect this to the warp core? That might be a good place to start.

Munro/Bergmen: Response

MacKenzie: Is there any way to get more power from the warp core to actually get this thing up and running without frying it? We cook this computer and we’re all toast…

Brexis: Can we get power from non-essential systems and re-route them here?

Breys was rifling around under the lowest access terminal in the computer core. The conduits seemed intact, and with sensor readouts they would be able to tell if the junctions between here and the warp core were intact.

Breys: I think that’s the right idea, but instead of rerouting what if we closed off existing junctions between here and the warp core, forcing the plasma into a known path. It should concentrate our power while limiting throughput to the conduit’s capacity. I’ll need an extra hand to reorient the junctions. ::her breathing quickened, she pivoted on her heels:: If you support that decision sirs!

Munro/Bergmen/MacKenzie: Response

With help from her crewmate she managed to force just enough power through the systems with the drip feed they had to properly shunt more power to the computer core. It wasn’t enough to solve the problem, but the lights weren’t flickering anymore.

Brexis: Do you think there are stored batteries somewhere? Or possibly a redundant fusion generator?

Brexis seemed almost nervous with this suggestion, turning to face the group.

Breys: The ship’s batteries have probably been drained by the Maelstrom. There is probably a generator somewhere on the ship, I don’t know where though.

Munro/Bergmen/MacKenzie: Response

Brexis: We can do this. We have to. I think I can speak for all of us when I say we are ready to get the hells of this planet.

She wished she had said something, but Breys wasn’t one for rally cries. Instead she gave a thumbs up and smiled, hanging her head in disappointment at herself after.

Munro/Bergmen/MacKenzie: Response

Despite that she didn’t have time to wallow. A problem needed solved, and Breys was the problem solving type. She perked her head back up. The lights had gotten brighter

Breys: ::pointing to the lights:: I think the warp core just got turned on, we just don’t have enough power to access anything. We need to find a way to insulate the room from the effects of the Maelstrom.

Munro/Bergmen/MacKenzie/Brexis: Response

These were all solid thoughts, and from all of them, suddenly a clear answer blindsided her.

oOJust like the shield around the ship…Oo

Breys: What if we use every bit of juice we have to remodulate a force field around the computer core. When it passes the right frequency everything should flicker on for a moment, and we can narrow the range of the search with each pass until we’re close enough to block off a notable amount of the maelstrom. It should only take a couple minutes, and we'll at least have a weak force field while we're looking. We can even stop at an adjacent frequency so we don’t overload the systems. That should lead to a power feedback loop where increased force field strength blocks out the Maelstrom, which increases force field strength till we reach equilibrium.

Munro/Bergmen/MacKenzie/Brexis: Response

Breys looked around, all of the interfaces were shut off, the only way to do this was going to be by hand, and remodulating the force field meant carefully maneuvering delicate parts while they were in use. She wasn’t practiced in this at all. She popped open the panel with all the confidence of an academy first year presenting to their class.

Breys: Does anyone know how to manually remodulate a force field?

Munro/Bergmen/MacKenzie/Brexis: Response
