((Medical Lab 2, Deck 7 - USS Artemis-A))
Jira looked at the PADD in their hand and back at the specimen container on the counter. A few of the crew had complained of what was looking like Tricillian flu, and they wanted to manage that quick. No one wanted a full outbreak of Tricillian flu. Not with this many Bolians on board; that would get messy fast.
They put the specimen container on the scanner pad and stepped back. Just then, their combadge chirped.
Morgan: =/\= Dr. Jaran, please report to Holodeck 4. =/\=
Jaran: =/\= Aye, sir. On my way. =/\=
Jira took the specimen off the scanner and filed it away with the PADD. Tricillian flu could wait. Whatever the lieutenant wanted, it probably had something to do with the excitement over the Boraxians, and they'd been practically begging to be included. Alien physiology was a new interest, and this was their first opportunity for some hands-on experience. Time to report to the holodeck!
((Holodeck 4, Deck 3 - USS Artemis-A))
Jira stood outside the holodeck and straightened their tunic.
oO This is it! Real frontier medicine! Oo
They tapped a panel, and the holodeck door rumbled open to a program already in progress. The space inside was... surprisingly comfortable and elegant. Ok, maybe the frontier was a little less rugged than they'd imagined. There were whiffs of incense and an occasional soft chime that wouldn't have been out of place in a Bajoran temple, and they had a brief tinge of nostalgia. But that could wait. Lieutenant Morgan, next to a couple officers Jira hadn't met, was smiling and waving at them.
Morgan: VahlJeahn, Lieutenant Imril, this is Doctor Jaran. I’ve asked them here for another set of medical eyes while we wait for Richards to finish her analysis of the rock.
Jaran: ::bowing their head slightly:: Good day. Pleasure to meet you.
oO Wow, that was stiff. Do better, Jira. "Good day"?? Oo
VahlJean/Imril: Response
Morgan touched their arm and drew them off to the side.
Morgan: Thank you for coming. It felt necessary to have another set of eyes on this experiment to make sure everything is as it should be. We’re trying to figure out what connection the Yurum have to these crystals, and whether or not they have the same effect on other races as they do to the other Boraxians.
Jira had read the general briefing. There hadn't been anything on these crystals and the Yurum, they were certain. They hadn't even been in team treating the injured Boraxians, much to their dismay. They were going to have to do the best they could.
Jaran: I'll admit that I'm not entirely certain, sir, what their effect on the Yurum has been. That shouldn't stand in the way of getting some good readings, though.
Morgan: I’m hoping it might give us some clues about why the Boraxians hold the Yurum in such high regard. It could also shed some light on the materials one of the away teams found in the Boraxian medical bay…
Jaran: I'll do my best to get you what you need! I'm looking forward to comparing notes.
Morgan nodded and turned back to the other officers.
Morgan: I believe we have what we need, and I’ve brought Doctor Jaran up to speed. Imril, if you’re ready, we can go ahead and get started.
Imril/VahlJeahn: Response
Jira was a little nervous about this. oO We didn't even know what this was doing to the Yurum on a cellular level, and we wanted to try it on a completely different species? Oo Assuming it had any effect at all, any process that affected alien physiology had the potential to do some serious damage without care.
Jaran: I really do need to take some detailed readings before we begin. We don't know what we're getting into here. I'm also going to be monitoring both of your vitals very closely throughout the entire thing.
Jira ran their tricorder scanner over both Imril and VahlJeahn. Seeing the live feed of data gave them a thrill, but they did their best to suppress any overt glee. Neither species was familiar to them, but it would be untoward to make a spectacle out of it. They learned that at the Academy, the first time they giggled to themselves while examining a Klingon. That nearly ended badly. No misunderstandings this time.
Imril/VahlJeahn: Response
The crystal seemed to be just that: a hunk of a rock. Their scan revealed nothing of biological significance. No known toxic substances on or in it. Just a pretty red... rock.
Jaran: The crystal seems safe as far as anything I can get off of it. But I'm no geologist. Is there anything about it that didn't make it into the briefing? I'd hate to miss something obvious.
Morgan/Imril/VahlJeahn: Response
Jira looked down at their tricorder again. Something still was making them nervous about this. Imril's physiology was so different from the Boraxian's. They didn't even know how to prepare for something going wrong. Would it be neurological? Endocrinal? Something else entirely? Jira would hate to be remembered as the doctor that let a patient explode into chunks on the holodeck.
Jaran: I guess you're good to start whenever you want. I'll do my best to stay unobtrusive. But believe me when I say that I'm not going wait and hope if I start seeing something that worries me.
Morgan/Imril/VahlJeahn: Response
They stepped off to the side and started fiddling with a hypospray. Their medical kit had a dozen different vials that could perform miracles, but hopefully none would be needed. They still loaded the hypospray with chloromydride, just in case. They held up their scanner and started taking readings.
