(( Chevalier’s room, Quarter 0712, USS Artemis-A ))
Forewarned by Black, Benny began to wonder if Chevalier wasn’t pushing it too fast.
Regrettably his experience had shown him how one of the reactions to a new prosthetic was to speed up the process. Most of the times that was counterproductive.
Holding Chevalier, Benny assisted him in sitting back on his chair.
Cliffhigh: My concern is that you might be pushing yourself, and your new limb, a little too fast. I don't like the way the knee is working.
Chevalier nodded
Chevalier: That knee, it’s like I would not feel it…like I felt my leg before or you know…I don’t need to think about moving my hand ::turns his wrists and curls the fingers on his right mechanical hand:: to do what I want to do. But with this leg, I need to focus. I need to think about movement, and in half the cases, it doesn't help anyway.
Benny smiled and kneeled down on the floor, looking slightly up at Chevalier.
Cliffhigh: Let's focus on small achievements to reach the higher objective. I want you to raise your leg and bend the knee. See if you can do it four times.
Chevalier nodded again and looked at his leg. Benny looked with attention at the young Ensign efforts. As he expected, the last movements were sluggish, and none were natural.
After the last attempt Chevalier massaged the stump of his biological leg and looked at Benny.
Chevalier: Like I said. If I lose attention even for a moment, he hardly listens to me.
Benny nodded. It was a common reaction. He had seen it too many times before, and there wasn’t really a clear universal solution. Sometimes it would take years for the person holding the prosthetic to really adjust to it.
Cliffhigh: Well, since it's a leg, not an ear I would be concerned if he did. Relax for a moment, will you let me try something?
Chevalier: Response
Benny let Chevalier rest and gently held the leg by the knee joint. He wondered how he could improve the movement, but help him
Cliffhigh: It is very common to be eager to walk back again. And to take time adjusting to the prosthetic. Close your eyes and let me move your knee a few times. If you feel any pain, let me know.
Chevalier: Response
Slowly Benny began to raise Chevalier’s leg by the knee and at the same rhythm to lower and finally straight it. He repeated the movement.
Cliffhigh: Keep your eyes closed as I move it. Don’t try and move it yourself, I want you to feel it moving. Once you do, then try and keep the motion exactly as I am doing it.
Chevalier: Response
