((Main Shuttlebay, Deck 11, USS Artemis))This was not where Gnai had expected to meet its bunkmate, but given the opportunity, it wanted to make a good, albeit brief, impression. There would be more time for discussion as to living arrangements and whatnot later. Perhaps they could find a time in both of their schedules over the shore leave. Gnai would put such a meeting on its mental list.
Gnai: Fantastic! It is good to meet you, apologies for not making contact sooner.
Chevalier: No issue here, Gnai. Perhaps you could leave a sticky note with a message next time. But don’t worry. To be fair, I could also leave a note along with a small welcome gift to make the space more inviting for you. So please remind me to give you that present when we return as I'm afraid it might have collected some dust already.
It was... not expecting to hear of a welcoming gift. What sort of thing might a humanoid assume that it might want or need...? The meeting was moved to the priority list in its mind. Curiosity killed the cat, as humans liked to say. But it wasn't a cat. It was Galadoran. So it should be fine.
Savel: Please ensure that you are all properly seated before takeoff, and remain that way until we are clear of the Artemis. I would not like to have to turn around the shuttle once we have departed.
Gnai: ::to Chevalier:: Thank you, a message system can be sorted out after the mission? ::to Savel:: Ready to go.
The crewman that came with them made her way to a seat. Another person that Gnai had never met. The pink hair was certainly memorable. Why such a bright color? It wasn't all too common, not in Starfleet, at least in its experience. Something to ask about later.
Flight control: =/\= Kerynitis, you’re cleared for take-off. =/\=
Jovenan: =/\= Acknowledged, Artemis. Have a nice day. Kerynitis out. =/\= ::to Savel:: Okay, let’s get off the bay and set course for Bajor.
Savel: Yes, Lieutenant.
Chevalier: Response
Gnai was pleased that Ens. Savel's piloting was better than it seemed that Ens. Chevalier had anticipated. Their departure was smooth and steady, and soon they were underway for the surface of the planet. Gnai watched as the ship faded from view, and Bajor grew bigger and bigger. This was going to be grand. As they got underway, Gnai listened intently as Lt. Jovenan briefed them on the goals of this training, and what exactly they would be using their loaned tricorders for.
Jovenan: Okay, here’s what were going to be doing today. ::inhale:: Rakantha Province used to be one of Bajor’s top agricultural regions, however during the Occupation, the Cardassians poisoned the soil. After their departure, the Bajoran Government has used soil reclamators to restore the ground. The efforts have been delayed several times, and there are still large wilderness areas that are considered too toxic for farming. Scenario: Starfleet has ordered the Artemis to assist the Bajorans in detoxifying efforts. We’ve been sent to analyse the soil and water to see how bad the situation is.
Renirs: Soo… Will the poison affect us, or is it just that we shouldn’t eat dirt if we get hungry?
Gnai didn't have eyebrows to raise, like Ens. Savel did, but it did flash a particularly confused shade of green towards the ends of its filaments. What an odd question to ask.
Savel: It would be logical to avoid eating dirt to satisfy your hunger, regardless of the presence of a poison in its composition.
Gnai: Presumably the Bajorans are worried more about the poison killing plants rather than people...
Chevalier: Response
The answer earned an eye roll from Jozial, a gesture that Gnai had acquired experience with after befriending a human who sat nearby it during a particularly frustrating course. Somehow, it seemed that Prof. th'Kaahlit's Diplomacy 101 had been just slightly more amusing with her eyerolls after every long tangent about his glory days in the Diplomatic Corps. This eyeroll, however, was a bit less amusing.
Jovenan: You will be working in pairs. Savel and Chevalier, your task is to take ground samples and analyse them in situ. Try to take as many readings as you can, but each sample have to be taken at least 250 metres from each other.
Savel: Very well, Lieutenant.
Chevalier: Response
Jovenan: Gnai, Renirs, you will be investigating the quality of the water in the local river. It’s a tributary to a larger river, where elevated levels of the toxins have been detected. It’s possible there’s a leaking toxin canister somewhere, so investigate any anomalies you might find.
This seemed like a far more interesting task than simply analyzing samples, wonderful! Finding toxins shouldn't be too hard. Toxins in water were a little unnerving to Gnai, but it was safe in its suit, so there was nothing truly to worry about.
Gnai: Aye, sir!
Renirs: K.
Jovenan: I’ll be monitoring your progress. I’ll try to spend time with both pairs, but if you need me, you can contact me at any time ::points at combadge:: Questions?
Nothing came to mind for Gnai. Perhaps it was a little over confident, but the situation seemed relatively cut-and-dry, for the time being. When they had boots on the ground, it may in fact change, but for the moment, Gnai felt prepared for whatever that river might throw at them.
Savel: Your instructions are clear, Lieutenant. Should we have any issues we will contact you immediately.
Chevalier: Response
Renirs: Do we, like, carry the water with us or do we just let it go free after checking it’s okay?
Another inane question from the crewman. Gnai was... not certain that it was looking forward to being partnered with her. But no matter what, it was not going to complain. One mildly frustrating field trip was far better than the mission it had just been on.
Jovenan: Response
((Rakantha Province, Bajor))The descent to Bajor was as Gnai had expected. The burn of the atmosphere against the hull of the ship as they entered was as thrilling as always, and the ground down below still showed scars of the Occupation, decades removed at this point. There was little question as to where the poison came from, even if the Bajorans hadn't told them directly of Cardassian involvement.
Renirs: Not the prettiest gardens they’ve got there, huh?
oO An understatement... OoSavel: Unfortunately not.
Chevalier/Jovenan: Response
Gnai followed the rest out of the shuttle after it had landed. It had little to collect, but it waited patiently for the rest as they did. Outside of the shuttle, the dusty browns and oranges of Rakantha Province's soil stretched out as far as one could see across the landscape, as barren as Lt. Jovenan had said. Through the dirt, a small river cut a long and winding path, water ambling along across the relatively flat ground, as if it didn't have much a care in the world. Gnai had seen the ribbon of water from the shuttle, and a few crescent lakes that had been pinched off in the past.
As it was looking around, Gnai noticed the crewman that it was assigned to work with, a Renirs according to Lt. Jovenan, had approached it.
Renirs: So, hi, yeah. ::pause:: That’s a pretty awesome suit. Does it have any guns?
oO What. OoThat question was not what Gnai was expecting. Perhaps a 'what species are you' or 'how does your suit work', those were common enough. Maybe even a 'can you survive outside of the suit'. It had never been asked about guns.
Gnai: Hello Crewman Renirs. Thank you. No, this suit is not made for combat. In fact, combat is preferably avoided...
oO Especially in a place where the only other water is poisoned, lest the suit break. OoRenirs: Response?
Savel: ::to Jaseb:: I believe that I am ready to go, if you are as well. ::to Jovenan:: Unless you have an objection, we'll begin Lieutenant.
Chevalier/Jovenan: Response
As the other pair made their way off to study the soil, Gnai looked up to Renirs and pulled out its tricorder. Even having to work with someone who... seemed not to want to be there couldn't put a damper on Gnai's enthusiasm. Not yet, at least.
Gnai: Are you ready, Crewman Renirs? ::pointing to the nearest bend in the river:: Perhaps that would make a decent starting point to trace the toxins.
Renirs: Response
With the new TR-600 in its suit's hand, Gnai walked deliberately towards the nearest point of the river. Turning around in its suit, the shuttle was still visible off in the distance, and to its side, the other ensigns were hard at work already it seemed. The few clouds that hung above cast shadows that slowly crept over them, a very peaceful image, especially in comparison to the previous mission. Seeing all the way to the horizon, with nothing more sinister than a lone rock or tree scattered about, was a welcome change from being stuck in the darkened hallways of Romulus or a walled-up prison-yard or a cave...
As nice as the silence was, Gnai felt awkward after its first interaction with Renirs. Perhaps it was time to try again. It wasn't certain what a good question would be, so it went with something that it hoped was fairly benign. The hair color question could be asked later.
Gnai: What brought you to tricorder training today, Renirs?
Renirs: Response
