(( In Space - Laoi System, Minos Korva Sector, Alpha Quadrant ))
Vailani: Approaching on vector 2, 5.
Silveira: Roger Zoy.
Sensing the animosity coming before its actual appearance, Gila tried to get ahead of it by physically interposing between her two friends. Vai-net and Sil-net’s opposing personalities aside, even Doctor Morgan was starting to show wear-and-tear in terms of his patience.
Morgan: Are we there yet?!
Gnai: Response
Sadar: ::forced excitement:: Okay! It’s time to get our testing underway! ::to Ensign Imril:: How’s the data on the solar radiation coming in, Ensign? Are the sensors working to parameters?
Imril: Sensors working to spec. They’re getting plenty of data, Doctor. Directing all of it to Lieutenant Gnai’s station.
Gnai: Response
That was good news at least. The sensor upgrades meant that they would be the first science team in Starfleet to get this thorough a profile of the star’s radiation, and Gila - in all her nerdy enthusiasm - couldn’t help but feel excited at that notion.
Silveira: Flight plan secured, getting closer.
Vailani: Reconfiguring the shield modulation. A variance of 0.16. As long as the radiation stays within that range then the shuttle's systems should remain operational.
Imril: Metaphasic shield projectors operating at 100 percent capacity. We’re good for approach to the star.
Morgan: ::tapping his console:: Looks like biological sample containers are intact and ready.
Gila nodded. Accompanied by so many of her fellow Lieutenants, and the very capable Lieutenant Gnai and Ensign Imril, she felt confident that they would be able to gather ample data to satisfy the needs of every research project slated for the survey run.
Sadar: Excellent. We’ll get the readings we need at the star, and then do the planetary survey of Laoi V from orbit. ::to Lieutenant Gnai:: Would a close parabolic orbit around the star give you ample time for your studies, Lieutenant?
Gnai: Response
Gila knew that Vai-net wasn’t as scientifically inclined as she, but she had a mind for details that had no rival, and that would no doubt benefit them as they prepared for a close run by Laoi sunstar’s corona.
Vailani: The shields are holding. If we adjust the sensor by 0.8 we might increase the depth :: turns to Gnai :: Lieutenant Gnai we'll try to give as much power to the sensors as we can but we need to maintain structural integrity.
Imril: Zero-point-eight adjustment ready on your order. I don’t foresee any issues on the engineering end of things from such a small modulation. ::Points to a section of the engineering panel, a series of sliders all at or near 100%.:: I’m keeping an eye on hull integrity on this panel here. If it starts to fail, I’ll be sure to let everyone know.
Gila wasn’t sure Ensign Imril would get the chance to warn them before they would feel the rather intense effects of a failing hull integrity while this close to a sunstar, but she appreciated his due vigilance regardless.
Silveira: I would very much appreciate that.
Gnai: Response
Sadar: Hmm... Even if the sensors can’t reach that depth level into the star’s corona, we might be able to read the radiation eddies and create a working simulation of the star’s behaviour further in?
Vailani: Response
Imril: I’m also watching the systems most likely to be impacted by proximity to solar radiation first. I recommend we start testing the targeting array now, to set a baseline.
While Gila had, obviously, been aware that testing the tactical systems had been on the itinerary, the reminder set her already tight nerves on a fender bender. It didn’t matter that the phaser was external to the vessel. She remained deeply uncomfortable with the notion of firing them.
Sadar: R-Right... Uhh... Do so before we get closer to the star. We don’t want to accidentally tamper with the sensor readings by upsetting the star’s magnetic fields with weapons fire.
Gnai//Vailani: Response
Imril: Maybe we should turn up the windshield tinting while we’re at it?
Morgan: ::nodding:: I’d appreciate that.
At Doctor Morgan’s request, the windows dimmed in brightness, allowing the inside of the shuttle to be bathed in a far more comfortable brightness level than it had been previously.
Silveira: There you go Doc Morgan
Gnai/Vailani: Response
Morgan: What kind of samples are we looking for, boss?
For a brief moment, Gila wasn’t certain she had heard correctly. Certainly her senior officer, the ASSISTANT CHIEF of her department, would not be calling her ‘boss’? Right? This had to have been an hallucinatory effect enforced by the sensors malfunctioning, or having an unfortunate effect on the air quality being circulated by the life support system. Very little other than that made sense.
Unfortunately, the amused expression on Sil-net’s face told her that she had, in fact, very much heard correctly, and it prompted her previously semi-stable mind to go on a full derail.
Sadar: B-B-B-Boss!? ::scrambles to twist anxiety ring:: Uhh-
Boss? No, never. She would hate that concept. Being in charge of a small isolated team of fellow Lieutenants on a survey run was already bad, and the mission to Kahines II, where she was the ranking officer and had to do diplomacy with KLINGONS!? That had been straight-up awful.
No, in no possible way would that ever come to pass. Regardless, a question had been posed by a senior officer, and as such, she was required to answer, though she felt her confidence slipping rapidly as her brain was still reeling from the misrank.
Sadar: W-Well- We start with the array testing? ::locks eyes with Sil-net::, then the, uhh, sensor sweeps of the inner corona? ::looks pointedly to Gnai:: And then we, uhh, do a parabolic orbit around the star, and head for Laoi V to gather the biological samples, and take a recess to test the condition of the sensors after the close proximity to the sunstar.
She’d been counting the necessary steps on her fingers, to ensure that she’d gotten all of it, but she remained entirely unsure.
Sadar: Did I miss anything?
Gnai/Imril/Vailani: Response
Satisfied that everyone was in agreement about the plan, Sil-net turned towards Vai-net to verify the best conditions to complete the first leg of their mission.
Silveira: Do you need me to change course for the array testing?
Vailani/Imril: Response
Silveira: Roger that. ::He grinned as he turned to Sada, Gnai and Morgan.:: Captain Sadar, what’s the next action.
If ‘Boss’ had elicited a reaction from Gila, it was nothing compared to the absolute dread and horror on her face as Sil-net committed one of the most grievous crimes Gila had ever witnessed from him. Her voice turned shrieky with shock as she responded to him.
Sadar: Sil-net!
Gnai/Morgan: Response
Silveira: Well, to all intents and purposes you are leading the mission, Captain Sadar.
oO I hate ‘to all intents and purposes’. Never has an alien voiced that line and had it lead to a good outcome for me. I hate this. Oo
Sadar: I, bu- Tha- That’s not-!
Gnai/Morgan/Silveira: Response
Vailani/Imril: Response
With defeat very pronounced in her expression, she touched one hand to her forehead, swaying uneasily as though a wind of true exhaustion was buffeting her from the hull itself.
Sadar: Just, let’s get on with the testing.
Thankfully, once a team of professional and competent Starfleet officers had a job to do, hazing and teasing banter (mostly) took a backseat. Gila didn’t have much to assist with on this leg of the journey, so instead, she simply watched as the others worked together to gather the necessary data for their projects.
With the targeting array tested - with no visible issues at this time - the Galaktoboureko was brought into a close orbit around the sunstar, and even with the dimmed window tones, Gila made sure to not look to overtly out onto the sun itself, instead contending with the console screens. It was hard to not feel giddy on Lieutenant Gnai’s behalf as they both watched the sensor data on the radiation tick in, giving them a much better understanding of the space biome in the system. Historically, old freighters and civilian Ships had logged complaints about experiencing difficulties with their Ship shields in this area, and while the reason had soon been concluded to be the radiation, and the necessary amendments made to all shield generators on vessels that frequented this system, they still knew precious little of the ‘why’.
Hopefully, this data could help with that.
The Galaktoboureko made the parabolic orbit around the sunstar with no issue, and soon, the shuttle’s nose pointed back in the direction from whence they’d come in the first place.
Gnai/Morgan/Silveira: Response
Vailani/Imril: Response
Sadar: Excellent. Now, set a course for-
((( OOC: The following has been agreed upon with Vailani’s writer. )))
Vailani: Response
Gila frowned. The colony on Laoi III was - technically - a Federation colony, but it had been one of the colonies that refused to evacuate back during the Dominion war, and as such, relations with the Federation’s governing body (and by extension, Starfleet), had always been a bit tense. Nevertheless, she was obligated to respond to the hail, as a member of Starfleet.
She couldn't help but feel a growing sense of paranoia at this development, though.
oO Please, don’t derail this for me. By the Wheel, I just want a quiet mission! Oo
Sadar: Oh, uhh... P-Patch it through? ::brief pause:: =/\= This is the USS Galaktoboureko. How can we help you, Administrator? =/\=
Gila had barely finished her greeting, before the impatient growling of the Tellarite Administrator resounded throughout the shuttle.
Bim Pend: =/\= About bloody time you Starfleet types got here. It’s typical - can’t be bothered to show up to fix our stuff, but as soon as we start getting things done ourselves, you fly on by, all willy-nilly! =/\=
Sadar: =/\= I... I-I’m sorry? =/\=
Bim Pend: =/\= I don’t need none of your fogey apologies, I need you to get planetside pronto and help us deal with this damnable wreck that’s frying our computers worse than a bad Sunday roast! =/\=
Gila felt well and truly bushwhacked, and she looked around at her fellow officers with a confused expression.
Gnai/Morgan/Silveira: Response
Vailani/Imril: Response
((( OOC: For the purposes of this mini-mission, consider Administrator Bresh Bim Pend, the Tellarite Administrator of the Colony on Laoi III, my MSNPC. Feel free to pose any questions you might have to the Administrator, before we beam down to the colony in my next SIM. )))
