((Intel Chief’s Office, Deck 8, USS Artemis))
A mysterious message, seemingly sent to her, in a particularly covert manner stating only ris valialin to― before being cut short. What could it be for? It didn’t seem likely it would be directed to anyone else, considering the unusual method of communication, the choice of language, and, of course, the fact that the alternate universe people wouldn’t know anyone else in here.
No, her counterpart must have been calling for them. Was it a call for help, a warning? No. It must be something else. Something sinister. After their meeting, Jovenan didn’t believe the person who looked like her identical twin would be anything but an evil puppet master trying to get a hold of their strings.
Jovenan: I met her earlier this week. I wanted to learn more about the “prismagons” – the devices that ripped the barrier between universes – but she was more interested in the Artemis. We, uh, we had an argument, mostly about our… my culture and religion, but I feel now like she was trying to gain access to me. She came across as manipulative and determined in whatever her organization’s goals were in their universe.
Filistrien: Response
Jovenan didn’t know exactly what her counterpart was doing, but it must have been something they should worry about. Maybe the message was a misdirection, or a part of a larger scheme for her to gain access to Starfleet data and technology. Whatever it was, Jovenan needed to warn her superiors of it.
Jovenan: There’s a possibility this is a ruse of some sort.
Filistrien: Response
The Commander groaned. Looking at him, Jovenan noticed his attention had shifted from the conversation to whatever he had on his console. Either he was unhappy with their speculation, or he had found out about something more pressing.
Dakora: A bunch of Desdemona crew just beamed over together. ::He looked at Jovenan and winced.:: Your… uh… the other you is with them.
Jovenan raised her eyebrows for a moment before frowning. The alternate universe people had been allowed to move between the two ships and onboard the Artemis relatively freely. Them coming to the Starfleet ship wasn’t in itself a massive concern, however, a large group of them doing so right after the mysterious message was sent didn’t sound like a coincidence.
Jovenan: That’s suspicious. Do you think it might be some sort of an… attack?
Not again.
Filistrien: Response
The Commander thought for a moment. Jovenan wished the mobilisation of the alternates wasn’t an attack or anything else, but to her it didn’t seem like there were many options. Her scheming counterpart must have her fingers in this.
Dakora: Ok then. Let’s play it safe. ::He pointed to Jovenan.:: You, go fill Silveira in on what we just talked about. He needs to make sure the Artemis is ready in case the Desdemona tries to pull any shenanigans. ::He looked to Filistren.:: Mister Filistren; find Ensign Savel, and tell him that I’d like him to increase the Security presence around large gatherings of Desdemona crew as a precaution for the moment. For now, let’s keep it nice and subtle. If we got this whole thing wrong, I don’t want to cause a trans-dimensional political incident.
Jovenan: Aye, sir.
Filistrien: Response
Dakora rose to his feet, and Jovenan prepared to get moving.
Dakora: Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have to go tell the Captain that I’ve just requested a Security Team to tail her duplicate with little more than some bad Edo poetry and a bad feeling to justify it. ::He cracked a wry grin.:: I’ll get with you two later, if I survive.
Jovenan smiled a little. Her nervousness was rising again in anticipation of the near repeat of the covert attack they had repelled during the previous mission. This time, she wasn’t just anxious, but she felt a hint of anger within herself, directed at her counterpart who seemed to be operating against them, uncertain how exactly, but certainly criminally. Still, she appreciated Dakora’s humour in this situation.
Jovenan: Good luck, sir!
Filistrien: Response
With a nod to the two intel personnel, Jovenan left the intelligence suite to the corridors of the ship. When she had come in, she had been irritated to be called in the middle of perhaps the greatest scientific project of the year. And now, briskly walking down the corridors, she had much more important things to occupy her thoughts.
Jovenan: Computer, locate Lieutenant Silveira.
She even had one wish. She wished she hadn’t spent all night in the lab. If they were under attack, she needed to concentrate. She couldn’t let the exhaustion dictate the outcome of the potential incoming fight.
