((Central Government Building, Starfleet Guest Suite – Kobyar Capital, Galaris IV))
Bergmen: Couldn't the team accompanying Grundens retrieve said drone and transport it to Artemis for further analysis?
Richards/Jovenan: Response
MacKenzie: So, Major – are you able to set up a training session for us, or shall we get to work analyzing the information you’ve provided so far?
Oolwi: I can set the session up with one holo-call. And I can call a tactical drone down here for analysis, as well. One from here in the Capitol, not Tevire. I only delayed summoning one because I wanted you all to be forewarned about the danger of potential computer infiltration before examining it.
MacKenzie nodded.
Silveira: That would be helpful and perhaps serve both purposes.
Bergmen: Good idea, lieutenant. Let’s move.
Jovenan/Richards: Response
Imril: ::Pointing towards the computer lab:: I take it that if we turn those drones on again, we’re back under the ‘unblinking eye’?
Oolwi: Yes. They operate independently of the building’s surveillance grid. As will the tactical drone.
Silveira: Interesting.
Bergmen: Anytime you’re ready, ensign.
Imril: Ready now, Sir.
Jovenan/Richards: Response
Oolwi: If our technology has been compromised, I do hope your firewalls are better than ours. For your sakes as well as my people’s.
Oolwi excused herself and moved toward the holobooth. The Starfleet team took advantage of the privacy.
Silveira: I have a feeling that this drone incident wasn't exactly how the Major told us.
Bergmen: A little suspicion never hurts, sir. If there is something offworld in their drones, I’m quite sure that Ensign Imril and I will find traces or reverse engineering similarities. I’m quite sure. ::turns the screen of his PADD to ensign and gazes at Imril:: Right, ensign?
MacKenzie: There are no options off the table until we gather evidence to warrant making such determinations
Imril nodded to Bergman and then the Captain. Time to be a detective! They moved to the table with the drone on it, and set their padd down upon it to start the work of analyzing the first set of readings. Focusing first on the micro-structural readings.
Jovenan/Richards: Vitor looked around as he shook his head.
Silveira: This looks like Old Cardassia to me. ::he looked at Zie:: Forgive me Captain, I hope I am mistaken, but I can't help myself from being suspicious about the Kobyar. Anyway if the Major sets up the exercise I think it will be helpful.
Bergmen: This code syntax is more than twenty years old, the executing protocol itself even pre-Dominion formatted. On one side, it’s enough for feeding new warp-capable civilizations' militaries as brand new if you don’t want to scream “this is mine” to the whole galaxy; on the other, within shady markets, it’s basically over-the-counter merchandise.
If the computer software was ‘better’ than it should be, it would make sense that other systems would need upgrades as well to keep everything running at peak efficiency. Imril’s own analysis was pointing in that direction.
Imril: For those who didn’t hear when I mentioned it outside, certain parts of the crystals in the tower walls look like ODN relays to me. The Kobyar wouldn't be the first people to develop crystal-based computing over fiber-optics, certainly. But in these two drones, I’m seeing even more direct similarities to ODN designs. I’d say from thirty years or so ago, before anyone started developing Borg countermeasures. These drones’ data relays are definitely more advanced than those of the buildings I saw outside, or this one. Nothing that tags their components as either replicated or sourced off-world, though.
Imril moved to one of the computer bay’s terminals. Their screens, too, already converted itself to Federation Standard. A holographic keyboard hovered over a physical one made of push-buttons large enough to accomodate a Kobyar's pad-like fingertips. They were careful to make sure any microphones or other surveillance toys the device was connected to were turned off before crawling around in the base code.
Imril: I’ll start digging into the lab computers. See what they’re packing.
Jovenan/Richards: Response
Bergmen nodded and gestured to Ensign Imril towards the drone on the table.
Bergmen: Let's compare as many drone parts as we can against our non-Federation technologies database before Major Oolwi gets back, and we'll see.
MacKenzie nodded, allowing the others to continue the discussion before stepping to the side.
(OOC: removing the combagde communication as MacKenzie stepped away)
MacKenzie: I assigned Lieutenant Vailani’s team to retrieve the drone if they’re able.
Imril acknowledged the Captain's statement with a nod before providing their next report.
Imril: Diagnostic complete. I can confirm the code that Lt. Bergman identified is present in the local computer network. ::Scans the lab itself:: And the more advanced crystals are present here as well. In the computers themselves, not the walls.
It seemed likely that that gear the suite was outfitted with, and the drones, had been produced more recently than the capitol building. How long would it be before the Kobyar started rebuilding and refurbishing its infrastructure to accommodate the new tecnology?
Silveira/Jovenan/Richards: Response
Imril took their padd up to access technology databases as ordered by the Captain.
Imril: I’d like to have some more scans from other areas and items before saying for sure. But it's very possible that these crystalline relays have been reverse engineered to work with Kobyar tech. The most likely template is Ferengi technology. But Ferengi surplus gear would probably also be among the easiest to acquire in the shadier markets.
They looked to Bergman for confirmation.
MacKenzie/Bergma/Silveira/Jovenan/Richards: Response
Imril: Technology developed in times of war tends to be developed for the battlefield before filtering out to civilian areas. If these ‘upgrades’ have started circulating in the capitol, it’s an easy guess there’s even more advanced items in active use on the front line. And that this technology creep has been going on for quite some time.
Oomli’s tactical drone couldn’t arrive soon enough for Imril. They could only imagine how badly Lt. Silveira wanted to get a look at one.
MacKenzie/Bergman/Silveira/Jovenan/Richards: Response
Oolwi: Response
(OOC: Holding Oolwi back another day to make room for more conversation between others with her out of the way)
