(( Bridge – Deck 1, USS Artemis-A ))
From the command chair of the Artemis, MacKenzie couldn’t help but be in awe of the sight on the viewscreen – the beautiful aquamarine Genesis planet, no doubt full of new life, created from destruction… A destruction that, in many ways left a very personal imprint for several of them now on board this ship – the least of which, the two seated on either side of her. Kalianna Nicholotti was the commanding officer of the Resolution, and Genkos Adea had been in charge of the vessel when things had taken a terrible turn. Now, as the trio once again found themselves confronting new life, they would likely also need to contend with the old demons that came with it.
On screen was not only the beautiful planet, but a Da’al cruiser, and an old B’rel class Klingon Bird of Prey.
MacKenzie: Welcome to the Genesis Planet… (beat) What is the status of the Klingon ship?
Silveira: Passive posture. Shields and weapons down.
Lyara: They’re maintaining a geosynchronous orbit, presumably over a point of interest.
Addison’s brow furrowed. She looked down to consult the readout on her armrest.
MacKenzie: I’m reading Klingon and Da’al lifesigns on the planet… ::lifting her head, shifting her gaze between Nicholotti and Adea:: Opinions?
Adea: Well, pray to the four they’re just exploring
Nicholotti: Close range? Perhaps they are meeting each other. If not...::She glanced over at Genkos.:: Well, hope for the best, but let's not forget to plan for the worst.
Silveira: Maybe they are starting negotiations? ::he shrugged:: At least they
aren’t killing each other… Yet…
Adea:
We live in hope Lieutenant.
The helm officer turned in
her chair to face the command crew.
Lyara: Their position in orbit is optimal for if they’re spending
extended time on the surface and beaming down any equipment. Could imply intent
for long term cooperation between the two.
Jovenan: I’m not detecting anything they could be negotiating or cooperating about; there are no signs of particularly interesting resources or presence of highly evolved life besides themselves.
MacKenzie: I’m not surprised… The planet has only been in existence for several years and, despite life evolving quickly on one of these planets, I can’t imagine it moving that quickly…
Imril: Response
Nicholotti: Cooperation would be the most hopeful outcome I think, though neither of them should be here.
Adea: Set up a synchronous orbit - keep us between the Da’al and Klingons… ::he eyed Addison:: Right?
She offered Genkos a slight smirk.
MacKenzie: Like riding a bike. ::to
the helm:: Synchronous orbit, Ensign.
Alroyo nodded to the command team and turned back to her console.
Lyara: Moving us into a
geosynchronous orbit.
Silveira: I
hope we can squeeze between them without trouble.
Imril:
Response
MacKenzie: ::softly:: So far, so good…
Nicholotti: As long as we remain peaceful, they should too.
MacKenzie watched as
the ships on the viewscreen also started to move.
Lyara: Sir, the Da’al cruiser and
bird-of-prey have started moving. ::Checking their flight path:: They’re moving
away from our intended position.
Nicholotti: Making room.
Adea: Response
Silveira: No posture
change, from either Da’al or Klingon
After another moment, Lyara
input a command into the helm console to begin decelerating as the ship reached
its new position.
Lyara: Reducing speed to full stop. ::Looking at the ships positions:: The Da’al cruiser and Klingon Bird-of-Prey have finished their maneuvers. They’ve created more space between us.
The Artemis
finished its path and stood itself between the Da’al and Klingon ships.
Nicholotti: That's an invitation if I ever saw one. They expecting us?
Silveira: Looks like it.
MacKenzie: Stafleet dubbed this area a no-fly zone. It was an inevitability we’d be sent to investigate… Now that we’re closer, can we get a better sense of what’s happening down on the planet?
Imril/Adea: Response
Jovenan: Producing the map of the area… The Klingons and the Da’al are in the same area, but don’t appear to be in direct contact – at the moment. No signs of advanced life forms beyond that area.
MacKenzie’s brow furrowed at the report. Something was not as it seemed… A Klingon science team? The Da’al who reported on the Klingon trespassers, who also felt the need to violate the no-fly zone in their own investigation, only to be found nowhere near the Klingon contingent…
Nicholotti: Say the word, Captain.
MacKenzie: ::leaning toward Nicholotti, raising her hands:: Well, I guess we’re going to have to go down there, aren’t we?
Imril/Adea/Lyara: Response
Jovenan: Aye, sir. ::pause:: Would it be prudent for all teams to arm themselves? I don’t think there’s any danger to the science team, but we could try to come to your aid if things turn ugly.
Silveira: I highly recommend it. Or at least an armed Security officer in each team.
MacKenzie raised a finger.
MacKenzie: Phasers all
‘round, please.
Imril/Adea/Lyara/Nicholotti: Response
Jovenan: Could I ask you to take some scans while you are there as well? I wouldn’t mind getting readings from as wide as possible, for later research.
Silveira: I recommend we keep the Da’al and Klingon in our sights and have regular communication between the Artemis and the away teams.
MacKenzie: Prudent, as always, Mr. Silveira.
The tactical
chief had come a long way since the mission that brought them here in the first
place… A mission which found him literally biting the neck of another person –
another officer – an action that, while horrific in and of itself,
couldn’t prevent the destruction of the Resolution.
Imril/Adea/Lyara/Nicholotti: Response
Silveira raised his finger, not waiting for
authorization to speak
Silveira:
I would also recommend using a shuttle instead of beaming down. It’s another
ship, even if small on orbit and on the planet, and it will be easier to cover.
Also it would show both Da’al and Klingon we
have arrived in style.
MacKenzie raised an eyebrow, considering the request
for a moment.
MacKenzie: I don’t
think so… There’s no immediate danger here, and I’m not one for making a flashy
entrance.
Imril/Adea/Lyara/Nicholotti: Response
Addison nodded definitively, standing in the middle of the Artemis’s command center.
MacKenzie: Commodore Nicholotti, take Lieutenant Commander Salkath, Lieutenant Bergmen and Ensign Alroyo. See if you can find out what the Klingons are up to. Given that they’re a scientific group, maybe they’ll be willing to talk…
She offered her fellow flag officer a raised eyebrow indicating her skepticism.
Nicholotti/Alroyo/Bergmen: Response
MacKenzie: I’ll take Lieutenants Sadar, Silveira, and Ensigns Imril and Solas. We’ll talk to the Da’al team and see if we can’t find out how they learned about the Klingon presence here and why they felt the need to investigate the matter themselves rather than waiting for Starfleet’s intervention…
Silveira/Imril: Response
She took a deep breath in through her nose before turning to Adea.
MacKenzie: Commander, I intend you let you and Commander Jovenan… indulge yourselves. Who knows if we’ll ever have an opportunity to study a Genesis planet this close again in our lifetimes. Take Lieutenant Gnai, and Lieutenant Savel just to be safe. See what you can learn about this place.
Adea/Jovenan: Response
MacKenzie nodded both to no one, and yet, to everyone.
MacKenzie: Alright – team leaders, make requests for whatever equipment your people might need, and let’s go. I don’t want the Klingons thinking we’re dawdling.
Any: Response (if necessary)
(OOC: I’ll get another sim out for my team later today - need more coffee before further writing. Happy hunting!)
