((Science lab 2, Deck 9- USS Artemis))
Jovenan: Fascinating. ::looks back to the PADD:: Well, the radiometric dating places the fossil at about 70-75 million years old. Which raises the question, what was it doing at a riverbed, on or near the surface?
With the rock in hand again, Sam looked at it with curious eyes.
Richards: Well, the spot I picked this up from had been fairly close to the Grunden Basecamp. We could assume after their heavy machinery went over that area so many times the ground wore down enough to bring it to the surface levels. It’s hard to say for sure.
Jovenan: Ah, well, that explains it. I suppose they don’t have the time to look at cool rocks in the middle of war.
She nodded in agreement.
Richards: I’m really glad you were here to see all of this with me. ::smiling:: Thank you.
It had been a fascinating discovery and pure luck that Sam had grabbed a rock that turned out to be something much more spectacular. Moments like that are what made riding the sidecar with Starfleet worth it. Without their access and opportunities, the chances of discoveries alike were much harder to come across.
Jovenan: Of course, thank you for letting me in with your discovery. I’ll leave you to it now.
Sam was a little bit sad to see Jovenan go, but overall grateful they were able to spend the time together regardless. Another thought popped up before the woman could walk away.
Richards: Did the results by chance show any signs of DNA or anything that could give us an idea of whatever this creature should have been?
Jovenan: There are what seems like fossilised DNA or RNA fragments to me. I’m not sure if that’s enough to figure out much about the species, but you might be able to run a comparison with the known, current Galaris species if there are matches.
It was good thinking, and a simple solution. Maybe she could reach out to Major Oolwi and ask for contact information to a scientist on Galaris that may be able to help.
Richards: Maybe it’s something even they haven’t seen.
Jovenan: Who knows, perhaps it’s an ancestor of both the Grunden and the Kobyar. ::shrugs:: Or perhaps not, but that would be something.
That would be an astonishing discovery, it was doubtful, but really cool to think about regardless.
Richards: I guess we will see what else I can dig up. ::Smirking:: I’ll let you know what I find out.
Jovenan: I’ll be looking forwards to your report. And when you bring in that, take some of those… cheezy puffs with you. I want to verify that they’re worth ruining a few soil samples.
Jovenan winked before waving goodbye and making her way for the exit.
Sam chucked to herself. She would be sure to hand deliver the report and the poofs as was requested of her.
END scene for Sam
