((Security Training Facilities - Security Center - USS Artemis-A))

She watched as Gavrin stepped forward again, this time attempting to mirror her movements she demonstrated. This time his stance was better, though one foot was turned inwards, unbalancing him.

Tarsan: Like this?

Cole: Adjust your foot. Otherwise you’re fighting your own balance.

Placing her right hand up to her chin, propping that arm with her left across her chest. Natasha watched as the nervous Ensign adjusted his stance at her guidance. He breathed in then out before firing at the three targets. This time there was a marked improvement in his accuracy. All three shots connected with both the closer targets, while one struck the furthest.

Tarsan: That... felt a lot better! Thanks!

She smiled at the results.

Cole: That’s the difference. Same range, same targets, but now your body isn’t getting in your way.

She stepped over to the console to confirm her math.

Cole: See you went from about twenty two percent of your shots hitting to nearly seventy eight percent. That’s quite the improvement with minimal adjustment. I’d like you to try tightening your grip, the phaser isn’t going to bite you if you hold it firm. If it helps imagine it as a laser welder.

Tarsan: ::smiling wryly:: Should I assume that the recommendation will be to keep me away from phasers until my aim improves?

Cole: Oh, I’m not done with you yet. ::smiling:: Keep in mind while we do have security or tactical personnel assigned to away teams. There is always the very real possibility that even as an engineer, you may have to use a phaser to support or even back up your fellow officers.

Her smile softened a little at the memory of Bergman, the young looking man that was far older than he looked, saving her on the Boraxian City ship. That reminded her she wanted to check in with him.

Cole: Also … ::smile widening:: That was just phase one.

Tarsan: ::stiffening:: There's more??

Cole: Two more, the third’s a personal favorite of mine. Not including a more advanced one, but you’re not ready for that one.

Tarsan: I'm not sure I'm ready for a second one! Okay, what's next?

Cole: Now we’re going to have you work hitting a moving target. The targets will be moving from cover so you’re going to have to focus. Remember what I told you about stance, breathing, and grip.

Cole: Computer, Run Standard Phaser target range two.

This time, half the room with the three targets shifted as the number of targets stayed the same, but began to move left to right and forwards and backwards in between various obstacles providing anywhere from no cover to full coverage.

Cole: Same parameters as before, When you're ready Ensign.

Tarsan: ::doubtfully:: Aye Lieutenant...

Natasha watched Gavrin. His stance was better, as was his grip. His breathing was all wrong causing him to flinch sending the first shot high into the ceiling and by the time he recovered the second shot hit the cover the target slid behind.

Cole: ::calmly:: Exhale, then fire.

Tarsan: Right. Breathe out

Gavrin corrected and his third shot hit the target. Natasha cocked her eyebrow at his little celebratory whoop.

Tarsan: Okay, one out of three's not bad, right Lieutenant? ::looking hopefully over his shoulder::

Cole: It’s a start. I’m more interested in whether you correct the next two.

She watched as Gavrin turned his attention back to the remaining targets. His accuracy, when he hit the targets improved as he went along

Still, he was going to need a lot more time in the range.

Tarsan: At least tell me I'm not the worst you've seen?

Cole: No. I’ve seen worse. Accuracy improves with practice. What matters right now is that you’re taking corrections and adjusting instead of shutting down.

Tarsan: Response

Cole: You’re improving, Ensign. Now prove you can do it on purpose.

Tarsan: Response

Natasha stepped behind him, letting him work.

Cole: Again. Same drill. This time don’t chase the target. Let it come into your shot.

Tarsan: Response
