(( Bridge - Deck 1 - USS Artemis-A ))
He waited outside the door, clutching the PADD to his chest, wondering how much longer he would have to wait. Should he ring the bell? Should he call them on their combadge? Ollie Bergman had no idea.
Well, he still had time. And it was never a good idea to disturb the captain, even if he needed to steal the Ensign she was grilling, because he had deadlines to meet. And assigning quarters to Ensign Tarsan was one of those tasks he received at the last possible minute. He sighed, shrugged, and sat down at a nearby universal console, because if he had to wait here, he could at least get some more work done before the ensign got out of the captain's grasp. And of course, as soon as he signed in and opened the documents, the captain's ready room door swung open, and the ensign stepped out.
Gavrin was already tired from the extended interrogation he’d received from the captain - and he’d only been on the ship for an hour. He felt a little like he’d just been run over by a shuttlecraft. He was so absorbed in his thoughts that he almost missed the person waiting for him and trying to get his attention.
Bergmen: Ensign Tarsan? ::raise his voice:: Ensign, wait!
Ollie stood up from the console and waved at the Ensign to get his attention. He quickly closed the windows and stepped closer to catch up with the Ensign.
Gavrin looked over when he heard his name, tilting his head and stopping halfway to the turbolift, waiting for the other man to catch up to him.
Tarsan: Oh, uh… hi. Sorry Lieutenant, almost missed you there.
Bergmen smiled and extended his hand to Ensign.
Gavrin reached out to take it, shaking it slowly, still trying to gather his thoughts.
Bergmen: Lieutenant JG Bergmen, Operations. I’m your point of contact regarding your quarters. We should have a meeting to assign you your room and everything?
Tarsan: Oh! Right. Pleasure to meet you, Lieutenant. Ensign Gavrin Tarsan but I guess you… knew that already. I haven’t had a chance to check my schedule yet… is now a good time?
Ollie nodded with a smile on his face.
Bergman: Yup, now is the best time. If you can follow me, I can set you up.
Gavrin nodded and fell in line alongside Bergman as they headed to the turbolift.
Tarsan: So uh… ::laughing wryly:: how deep in the bowels of the ship am I getting put?
Bergmen quickly checked his PADD before he turned his glance back to Ensign.
Bergman: Hm, Deck 5, Sector 06… that’s port stern, if I remember correctly. Recently vacated.
Well, that didn’t sound so bad to Gavrin. He’d definitely slept in worst places. He did his best to dredge up a smile, asking the next question that was on his mind.
Tarsan: Do you know who I’ll be assigned quarters with?
With another question, Ollie checked another page on the screen. He would have sworn that he had read the folder and tried to remember it beforehand, but when it was time to answer, the thoughts and information from the dozen or so assignments he had been juggling were all mixed up.
Bergman: With no one, so far. The second berth in your quarters is vacant, so far. Maybe someone will be assigned later; you would be informed in advance, of course, when that happens.
The door to the turbolift opened as the OPS Officer finished the sentence, so Bergmen motioned for Ensign to board the lift, and they headed down to deck 5.
(( Quarters 0605 - Deck 5 - USS Artemis-A ))
The lights turned on as Ollie Bergmen entered his access code and the doors to the quarters opened. Gideon gestured to Tarsan to enter before he followed him inside. What they saw, the operation officer definitely did not expect. The walls were bare, and most of the furniture in the main living room was missing.
Bergmen: Okay, looks like the previous occupant had their own furniture… (beat) But that gives you a chance to redecorate. ::smiles::
Gavrin was a little surprised at the lack of furniture himself, blinking around at the empty space before looking back to Ollie.
Tarsan: Hey, that’s pretty much perfect for me, sir. I can figure out what I want here, though nothing that’d put off anyone else moving in!
Bergmen: Will you take the left or the right room? Just for the record.
Gavrin glanced between the two rooms on offer, thoughtful as he considered it. He had no real preference, so he was just going to go off gut feel.
Tarsan: Uhhhh, left, I think!
The engineer had made a decision. That was good enough for sure, he didn’t need to second guess himself.
Ollie nodded and took it as said.
Bergmen: Understood, Ensign. Left it be… ::clicks on the PADD:: And.. It’s yours. Do you wanna see it? Rate the view?
Gavrin nodded, stepping over to the left hand room, glancing inside thoughtfully before he stuck his head back out and looked over at Ollie.
Tarsan: So um, what’s the procedure for requesting additional furniture?
Gideon OPS officer glanced from the screen and furrowed one eyebrow.
Bergmen: Do you mean standardized, or would you prefer to deliver your own?
Tarsan: Oh, I don’t know exactly what I want yet sir, but as long as I know how to ask!
Bergmen briefly nodded to mark that he understood and smiled as he tucked his PADD under his arm.
Bergman: Technically OPS Centre, but in reality, it would be me, when I'm on duty, as your contact person for any issues with the quarters, Mr. Tarsan. Like…
A beep from the PADD in his armpit cut him off mid-sentence. Gideon looked back at his PADD and sighed.
Bergmen: Ah, looks like the rest of your things will arrive… (beat) Tomorrow. A little hiccup on the way.
Gavrin’s shoulders drooped a little. This is what he’d been afraid of.
Tarsan: A hiccup? I hope nothing got broken…
Bergmen: They are loaded to ship on the other side of the dock, so we will need to send the request to unload them from Atlantis and transfer here. Probably just due to a typo. Atlantis. Artemis. ::smiles as he moves his head from side to side:: Anything important within what you would need right now, so I can get to you until we get your things here?
That was not as bad as Gavrin imagined - he’d been thinking that it’d all been jettisoned into space or some such other disaster. A misdelivery? He could cope with that. He took a moment to remember what it was he’d packed.
Tarsan: Oh uh… no, nothing that I can’t live without for a day or two. I can replicate some spare clothes and that should see me through…
Bergmen nodded in answer to Ensign’s words.
Bergmen: Okay, so, I will let you know as soon as your things arrive. Sorry for any inconvenience.
Tarsan: Hey, it happens, long as it all turns up it’ll all be fine! Honestly I was worried you were going to say they’d been transported into the heart of a sun or something…
Ollie glanced from the screen to Gavrin and smiled.
Bergmen: Don’t worry. It will be fine.
He glanced back at the screen and pushed it a couple more times before he returned to the Engineer.
Bergmen: And request sent. Is there anything else I can help you with now and here?
Tarsan: No, I think I’m all good. Thank you for the welcome, Lieutenant. I’ll let you know if there’s anything else.
Gavrin gave Ollie what he hoped was a reassuring smile, carefully unslinging his satchel and gently placing it in his new room. He could unpack it later.
Bergmen: Okay, Mr. Tarsan, you know where to find me, so I will leave you to it. Enjoy your day, and it was a pleasure to meet you. Ollie gave young Ensing one last smile and held out his hand for a handshake.
Tarsan: And to you, Lieutenant.
