((Sickbay, Deck 7, USS Artemis))
A bridge officer had confirmed that they had received the instructions to lock on to the away teams in case they’ll need an emergency beam-out. First item of Lt Silveira’s order done, Jovenan tapped her combadge to initiate a commlink to the Captain.
Jovenan: =/\= Ensign Jovenan to Commander MacKenzie. =/\=
She could hear Lt Silveira and Doctor Morgan discuss about Commander Adea’s mental state just around the corner. If the Da’al and Lt Dakora were affected by the dust as the Commander had been, the away teams were in great danger. Jovenan hold her breath, waiting for the Captain to reply.
MacKenzie: =/\= MacKenzie here, everything alright? You sounded a little flustered last time we spoke… =/\=
Jovenan felt somewhat relieved. She should have contacted the Captain earlier, but at least the Captain’s team hadn’t been killed by Jovenan’s incompetence in that regard.
Adea: Tell Talos to wring Addison’s scrawny little neck, hahahahaa!
Silveira: Dammit Genkos you're really sick. If that's your evil laughter you need more practice.
Ignoring the restrained Commander’s heckling, she reported their team’s events to the Captain. She wished to be brief, not knowing in how difficult spot the away team was. She also left out some unnecessary details, not wanting to establish blame or credit to anybody at this moment.
Jovenan: =/\= Y-yes, sir. We are on the Artemis. Commander Adea attacked the Da’al, and we were fired upon, so we needed to beam back to the ship. Lieutenant Silveira is injured, he’s being treated in the sickbay. Commander Adea is restrained in here as well. ::pause:: What is the status of your team, sir? =/\=
MacKenzie: =/\= It’s not good. The Da’al are completely out of control and are rioting throughout the province. Doctor Jones has created a device that seems to have erased the effects on Lieutenant Dakora and Minister Erbil, and he’s working with Lieutenant Yellir on a way to employ it so that it impacts a larger number of people. =/\=
The Captain had contact with Jones and the rest of the crater team? Good, at least they were alive as well. Jovenan was surprised how Jones could have managed to find a cure while avoiding the zombie-like Da’al. Then again, he and the rest of that team were all very resourceful people, and they sure had several test subjects down there.
She would have loved to hear more of the teams’ efforts, but the Captain sounded like she had a lot of other matters to attend to, so she kept her next message short.
Jovenan: =/\= The dust we had on ourselves dissipated when we beamed in, but Commander Adea has not stabilized yet. It might take time even after that, so be careful down there. What are your orders for us, sir? =/\=
MacKenzie: =/\= Have the bridge keep a lock on our signals – we have some pretty nasty demolition equipment moving toward us, and we may have to get out of here quickly. MacKenzie out. =/\=
Demolition equipment? That didn’t sound promising. She considered contacting the other team for further details, but considering the circumstances the Captain was in, it might be better to wait until they were in a safer position. The commlink was terminated, and only Commander Adea’s delirious chanting remained.
Adea: ::singsong:: Aaaaaddison, oh Addison, oh I remember Addison, Addison the failed captain!
Frowning, she turned back to the sickbay team. Lt Silveira had turned the “discontent superior officer” face to a smile.
Silveira: Ignore him Ensign, you know he's not alright. ::he gestured to his injured shoulder.:: Sorry to drop the ball on you, but you're doing good so far.
She remained neutral, trying not to reveal that she would very much prefer to leave it all to senior officers and retire to her bed.
Jovenan: Thank you, sir. The away teams are looking to deploying a potential cure, but they are in a difficult spot now, so it might be better to wait until they are clear before we contact them again.
While she expected for further instructions from the Lieutenant, her attention was grabbed by something that happened further in the sickbay. Commander Adea had grasped Doctor Morgan’s uniform and was… pleading for something?
Adea: Lexorin, quick. It might help…
Morgan: One order of Lexorin, coming up.
Silveira: Lexowho?
Jovenan only shrugged. The Doctor loaded a hypospray and pressed it against the Commander’s neck. After a moment, he seemed to relax, or at least not actively try to break out of his restraints.
Morgan: How much do you remember of what’s happened?
Adea: Response
Silveira: Is it me or there’s a bit less aggressiveness there Commander?
Jovenan was slightly dubious, as she was fooled by the Commander once before, as he had pretended to be coming back to himself earlier in the transporter room only to begin beating the force field with a sword. But this time, he had been given medicine that could have really been effective.
Jovenan: Did the medicine stabilize him?
The Doctor was nodding, although it wasn’t entirely clear to whom.
Morgan: Oh, I’d imagine she’s going to hand you a new one when she gets back.
Silveira: Yeah and don’t forget the Disco Ball. That’s the best way to see you are getting better Commander.
The Lieutenant was facing his friend who tried to kill him, and he talked about a navigational device – presumably – and not about, you know, anything that has happened today? Some of these people puzzled Jovenan.
Jovenan: What even is…?
Adea/Morgan: Response
Silveira: What? I am supposed to sit still here, I have enough time to think on these matters.
Adea/Morgan: Response
The Lieutenant winked but got back to the business right after the brief moment of humour.
Silveira: Fine, playtime is over and I will behave. ::He turned to Nan, first.:: Anything I can do to help, that doesn’t imply moving, I am here for you Ensign. ::Then he turned to Kyle:: I assume you will want me to stay the night? I will take care of breakfast in the morning. ::Finally he turned to Genkos:: Looks like we are bunking together, so let me ask you the real important thing… Do you snore?
Anything to help? That would imply Jovenan should be doing something. And that she is supposed to know what she’s doing. Nodding to the Lieutenant, she moved to a computer interface again as he still spoke with the others. She’s the science officer, so science is what she should do.
Adea/Morgan: Response
The biobed had recorded the Commander’s brainwaves: they had been abnormal only a minute ago, but as soon as the Commander had received the dose of medicine, the brainwaves had steadily converged towards the Betazoid norm. Analysing brainwaves was something she had only little education on and that should be left for medical officers, but she spotted something familiar about the waves before the medication. She opened the readings she and Jones had gathered while on the planet. It was a match.
Jovenan: The Commander’s brainwave frequency and amplitude were out of the normal variation by the amount concurrent with fluctuation of the gallium compound.
Adea/Morgan/Silveira: Response
Jovenan: Either the dust synched with the brainwaves, or brainwaves synched with the dust… or both, really, as they are not fitting the typical for either. Does telepathy output enough energy to cause such effect?
Adea/Morgan/Silveira: Response
