(( Outskirts of the Bantlox Colony - Laoi III ))
For all the excitement that Gnai had had over this survey mission, it had dwindled down to basically nothing by this point. Was there ever going to be a completely straightforward science mission? Just going somewhere, taking some samples, looking at data, going home? No distractions, no violence, no Dominion ships that required the evacuation of a colony??
Apparently, as it had been informed when it first came aboard the Artemis, no. It was completely unreasonable to hope for that, and it just had to suck it up. Why it even still had an inkling of hope in its mind for calm stability, Gnai would never understand. Maybe it was just an insane optimist.
Sadar: Lieutenant Gnai, are Ensign Imril’s calculations accurate? Would a two or three kilometer radius suffice for a safety perimeter?
This was not something that it felt remotely qualified to answer, so Gnai took a moment, trying to run through what little it knew about spacecraft (particularly older ones, and Dominion ones), and scans that it had quickly taken of the rocks underneath with a quickly-pulled-out tricorder. A sufficiently large blast… the ensign’s numbers seemed about accurate, if a little bit overly cautious to Gnai’s mind. But better to be safe.
Gnai: ::somewhat hesitantly:: That seems reasonable, there’s a good margin of safety there.
Sadar: Vai-net, how do we do this? Transporters?
Vailani: The transporters yes but they have a limited capacity. The important thing is :: to Bim Pend :: is to reassure people that that is a precaution and temporary, however it is important that they evacuate calmly. We can set up transportation zones, coupled with shuttles and transport vessels. We'll need a list of the communities and the occupants?
Thankfully, they had someone from Ops in their little team - the logistics of moving so many people were far beyond Gnai. It could do “back of a PADD” calculations on explosive excavations of rock, but trying to herd everyone, and remember all the little details? Out of the question.
Bim Pend: Right right, I’ll have my aides pull those records for you.
Sadar: Are the other settlements able to receive evacuees until we’re certain the Ship has been neutralized?
Bim Pend: If they aren’t, I’ll make sure they will be very quickly.
Gnai: They’ll have to be…
The shuttle was out of the question for holding any significant number of evacuees, obviously, so they had to go somewhere. If it came to it, Gnai supposed they could try and replicate a whole shuttleload of tents, but there had to be some space elsewhere on the planet to hold them.
The settlement, as they came upon it, was thankfully small. There wouldn’t be too many people displaced, not too many people to get up in arms and mad at them for pushing them out of their homes, even briefly.
Vailani: Do you have a communications network?
Bim Pend: Of course we do, we don’t live in the Dark Ages! ::grumbles:: We have a globalized network that connects us to the other settlements.
Gnai: Sorry, sir… It’s just… ::gestures to the settlement:: with the size of Bantlox, it was not a guarantee.
Bim Pend: We’re frontier, not medieval.
Perhaps that hadn’t been the right thing to say.
Vailani: I can't stress this enough. We need the colonists to remain calm, there is no reason for anyone to panic. If people panic this will not go smoothly and people can get hurt.
Bim Pend: I heard you the first time. Do I seem deaf to you?
No matter what they said, this Tellarite did not seem to take it well. Was this how the rest of the evacuees would be? Ornery and obstinate?
Sadar: ::clears her throat:: C-Considering the layout of the settlement, the coastal fields would p-probably be the easiest location to gather everyone and, uhh, o-organize evacuation groups?
Gnai: And possibly camp out if… ::flickering with worry:: there isn’t enough room for everyone in other settlements.
Vailani: Response
Sadar: We’ll get the evacuation zones set up... P-Please get the evacuation itself started
Bim Pend: ::grumbles:: Comes in here and act like they own the place. ::louder:: I’ll get my people gathered.
He huffed and puffed his way off, and Gnai felt endlessly better now that he was gone. Perhaps it was a bit rude of it to be so put-off by his behavior, but the administrator had not taken well to them, so Gnai had not taken well to him.
Gnai: That… could have been smoother, this thinks. He was far less cooperative than expected.
Vailani: Response
Sadar: The relations between the Federation and the DMZ colonies hasn’t been the best since the war... A-Afraid we’re going to have to be the first step for Laoi III to start trusting it again. ::to Vai-net:: All right, Chief of Operations. How can we help?
Vailani: Response
Gnai: ::bobbing in its tank:: That’s reasonable, sir.
Sadar/Vailani: Response
Gnai: Anything else right away, sir?
Sadar/Vailani: Response
Before they could call this meeting-of-the-minds to an end, and get started working on the actual evacuation plans drafted by the Chief, the little wriggling thought at the back of Gnai’s mind pushed itself forwards.
Gnai: Not to interrupt but, sirs… you said that there weren’t good relations between the Federation and these colonies. What is the plan if the colonists are somehow… less inclined to accept assistance than their administrator? Some of them might not want to move, even briefly?
Sadar/Vailani: Response
