(( Brew Continuum - Deck 3USS Artemis - A ))

Despite being caught off guard by the newest Artemis officer several hours before their scheduled meeting, MacKenzie accepted the invitation for coffee (right place, right time, apparently). The tradeoff would be that she'd asked Charlotte to grab their beverages while the commanding officer retreated to one of the more secluded spots to do some last-minute studying of the woman's personnel file. Fortunately, it wasn't busy and the wait wasn't long, so Brexis came over a few short moments later, raktajino in hand. MacKenzie gratefully grasped the mug that was meant for her, then pointed to a chair opposite from where she was seated.

MacKenzie: Have a seat, Lieutenant. I see you grew up on Betazed?

Brexis: ::Nodding as she took a polite sip of her Espresso:: Yes. I’m from the Melfi Islands. Basically like everywhere else on Betazed but more water.

MacKenzie nodded along, drawing a swig of the raktajino from her mug.

MacKenzie: What brought you to Starfleet?

The new officer relaxed a bit, leaning back in her chair crossing one leg over the other.

Brexis: Same thing that brings a lot of others. Childhood trauma, the need for something different, the want to help people. ::Chuckling:: That part of me is not an enigma.

MacKenzie clicked several places on the PADD before bringing her attention back up.

MacKenzie: Do I see it correctly that your last posting was the Academy?

The placement was unusual - commissioned officers didn't usually receive assignments at the Academy unless they were proctoring exams or nearing retirement and considering teaching.

Brexis: Let’s just say I spent enough time there after Frontier Day that they felt compelled to give me some kind of credit for my help. It was never an official posting. ::shrugging:: I’ll be transparent with you. Anyone that faced the Borg that day had to take some time to recoup. I knew the best therapists and counselors were at the Academy. I needed them and they were already familiar with my history. I stayed longer than I intended.

The red-headed commanding officer of the Artemis cocked her head. It was a galactic understatement, and one through which she didn't need to be reminded of. She had been there on Frontier Day, like many still on the Artemis, and she certainly didn't need someone else to allude to the varying degrees of shared trauma.

MacKenzie: ::flatly:: You don't have to tell me, Lieutenant - I was there. (beat) While you were at the Academy, what were your duties?

Charlotte reached for her cup and paused for a moment.

Brexis: I helped conduct drills, filled in for simulated scenarios and occasionally taught the Cadets martial arts. Anything to fill my time with something that gave me a purpose.

MacKenzie: And now you believe you have found purpose elsewhere... and been assigned as my Strategic Operations officer.

Brexis: I am new to Strat Ops. It would be helpful if you could tell me exactly what your expectations are for me. I take my place on the crew seriously and I don’t want any confusion on my specific duties.

MacKenzie purposefully held her face very still. Surely Starfleet wouldn't have assigned someone to a ship - her ship - without properly preparing her for the role. Any such assignment, especially in the role of strategic operations, would be a liability. Rather than jump into an accusatory posture, she decided to take the long road.

MacKenzie: Why don't you tell me what you think of the role, and how you think it might be applicable on the Artemis?

She took a swig of her raktajino while the woman answered.

Brexis: Response

MacKenzie: You are essentially responsible for coordinating between departments to make sure that the ship is running at peak efficiency, in addition to providing a certain level of oversight during certain unique scenarios that might come up during a mission, and coordinating between the Artemis, Deep Space 224, and the other ships assigned to the region.

Brexis: Response

MacKenzie: So, based on what you know of the Borderlands and the Artemis how do you envision we might use your service in this position?

Brexis: Response
