((USS Artemis, deck 11, Main Shuttlebay, Cockpit of the USS Galaktoboureko))
Zoyara was nothing if not known for her due diligence and she was not going to be caught slacking off on her first survey mission within the first few days of being on the Artemis. On the way to the Artemis, she’d made it her duty to read everything she possibly could about the ship, her crew and any of the crafts assigned to it. That included the Galaktoboureko, a type-11 shuttle.
Her tricorder blinked as she scanned it, a shrill beeping coming from the device that told her the scan was underway. Her hazel green eyes flitted from the device to her PADD, where a readout of the results were currently scrolling along her screen. It wasn’t that she didn’t trust the crew to have completed the recent repairs and upgrades correctly but she had learnt from her time on the Ronin that some extra checks were necessary.
She watched Lieutenant Silveira, who she recognised from her brief time on the Artemis as an ensign. She doubted that he would remember her; given his reputation as a bit of a wild card. Back then, she had done her best to avoid him. Now, it would seem that she was going to be stuck inside a shuttle with him.
oO great Oo
The tricorder beeped one last time, slightly louder than before, indicating the scan had been done. The shuttle was in perfect working order. She placed the tricorder into its holster and carried the PADD in her hand as she followed the tactical officer into the shuttle.
Silveira: I heard you could use a hand.
Gnai: Oh, hello Lieutenant Sadar!
Morgan: Response
Sadar: Oh! Uhh... H-Hello. I’m sorry, I didn’t expect-
She spotted the Mizarian, upfront in the shuttle, pouring over PADDs a pile stacked on a console beside her. She allowed a smile to creep across her face before she greeted the human man.
Vailani: Nice to see you again, Lieutenant Silveira.
Her eye was then immediately distracted by the colourful luminescence of the Galadoran science officer. Gnai. She wouldn't forget the first and only Galadoran she'd ever met.
Vailani: :: in greeting :: Lieutenant Gnai.
She hoped she had pronounced it's name correctly.
Sadar: Vai-net!
Vailani: Gila-net!
She cringed a little at her own outburst, in front of the mysterious Galadoran no less. It was brought on by the spike of joy she felt at seeing her friend, and knowing that they were serving together again. As much as she'd miss Luxa, Ena and the others on the Ronin - in Zoyara’s life, no one quite understood her like Gila did.
Silveira: Looks like we have an interesting bunch here.
Imril: I try not to be boring.
Zoyara turned to be met with an individual, rank of ensign, that appeared human with bright golden eyes that reminded her of Luxa’s in colour. She nodded in greeting. This must be the Bactrican engineer she'd read about.
Vailani: :: formal :: Nice to meet you :: nods :: Lieutenant Vailani.
She knew that some, especially the humans, liked to offer a hand in greeting. An unsanitary and frankly too personal thing to do with strangers in her opinion. She kept her hands firmly locked on her PADD, offering a thin smile instead. The ensign didn’t respond either way.
Morgan: Response
Gnai: Response
Sadar: Y-Yeah, we’ll be ready to take off soon. Uhh... The sensors are reading green, but maybe Ensign Imril should do a final systems check before we take off? It would be a waste to go to Laoi III only to realize something’s wrong.
This was a good sign. She was used to herding mavericks, it seemed this lot had actually taken the standard safety briefings seriously. Was that another smile she felt forming? Perhaps she was coming down with some virus? Or maybe they pumped some blissful gas into the Artemis ventilation system?
Imril: Aye, Doctor. I was just coming in to start that.
As the ensign made himself at home at the engineering station, she navigated her way to the operations station. After a few moments she had booted up the systems.
Silveira dropped his backpack, and Zoyara shot him an annoyed look.
Her smile faded away.
oO take a breath, you’re a chief now Oo
Silveira: So, Lieutenant Sadar, what are we heading ourselves into?
Vailani: :: curt :: Didn’t you read the briefing?
She tried to keep the irritation out of her voice and failed.
Morgan: Response
Sadar: Well, there’s a few separate survey goals associated with our trip. ::gestures to the bunch of PADDs:: I have a project that I’m hoping to find some biological samples for, and I know the tactical department had some concerns regarding the interplay between the new sensors and the targeting arrays for the shuttle’s weapons systems?
Zoyara’s role would be to analyse the interplay between the two systems, and optimise for maximum efficiency. Everyone knows that the operations department were the unsung heroes of any ship.
Silveira: Now that’s my language. And I assume I can count on your engineering skills Ensign Imril?
Imril: I expect so, Sir, yes. I wasn’t part of the team that upgraded the sensors, but I’ve reviewed the build notes. Everything looks pretty straightforward. These sensors draw a little more heavily on the shuttle’s power stores than the standard model for this class, partially to process the extra data. But nothing that will eat irreparably into the surplus generated by the engine core.
Gnai: ::a bit hesitant to butt in:: There are also some anomalous radiation readings from the star in the system… Sir.
Morgan: Response
Silveira pointed to the piloting seat.
Silveira: Is there a designated pilot, or can I take the spot.
Sadar: Response
The human turned and winked at the others. Zoyara grimaced in a look of outward disgust before she realised her face had changed shape and straightened it up, hoping that no one had seen it.
Silveira: You will all be in good hands.
Vailani: Are your certifications up to date, Lieutenant?
Morgan: Response
Zoyara raised her eyebrows as she became more and more concerned each time Silveira did … well anything at all. As he shrugged and headed to the pilot’s seat, she tried to catch Gila's eye who seemed to be accustomed to this kind of bravado.
Given that she'd nearly died in several shuttles, she felt she had the right to ask if he was even qualified.
Silveira: A type eleven I only flew… Once. But they say it’s like riding a bike.
Gnai: A bike…?
Vailani: A pedal-driven single track vehicle. :: sighs :: Hardly an assuring comparison.
The lieutenant seemed to laugh off her comment as he began his preflight checks. Again, she stared at Gila, her jaw slackened in shock.
Sadar: Response
Morgan: Response
Silveira: The expedition leader is Doctor Sadar, any complaints should be addressed to her.
Imril: Doctor, a question not a complaint. You said you’re planning to pick up biological samples. How are we set up for storing them?
Sadar/Silveira: Response
She continued to set up her own station, keying in relevant details based on the conversation. She had read the brief, unlike some people and had already preconfigured several commands and systems based on what she figured they'd require.
Imril: And how are you planning to test the targeting array?
Sadar/Silveira: Response
Morgan: Response
Gnai: Will the interference from the stellar radiation be of any concern with the testing? Or will that be determined in situ?
Sadar/Silveira: Response
Vailani: We'll need to adapt the shield resonance manually to compensate for the anomalous radiation.
Morgan: Response
Gnai: And… The study of the star, is that still set to proceed?
Did she detect some kind of anticipatory anxiety in the Galadoran?
Sadar: Response
Morgan/Silveira/Imril: Response
The alien inside the tank's tendrils flashed, she was unsure what it meant to convey. Perhaps excitement? Nervousness?
She wouldn't blame it for being nervous in a shuttle being piloted by Silveira.
Gnai: Thank you, sir. That’s the primary reason this decided to volunteer for this survey in the first place. It’s what this specialized in, at the Academy.
Sadar/Morgan: Response
Vailani: :: eager :: Systems are a go for launch. Ready when you are Lieutenant.
oO please don't crash the shuttle Oo
Silveira/Imril: Response
Sadar/Morgan/Gnai: Response
Zoyara kept her eyes fixed as the doors to the shuttle closed over and the officers began well practiced launch sequences. For her part she observed the propulsion systems and power conduits. More keenly than she otherwise would have given that Silveira wasn't the most experienced of pilots.
A communication from the bridge indicated that they were cleared for launch.
Vailani: The bridge has cleared us for launch, lieutenant.
Silveira/Imril: Response
Sadar/Morgan/Gnai: Response
