(( Holodeck 1 - Deck 2 - USS Artemis-A ))

Alex raised herself to her full height and crossed her arms over her chest.  Black eyes pierced Roy as she waited for him to do as she had asked.

Storm:  Look through me at the target.  And when I eventually move, I want you to do the same thing still.  Look through the target.  ::Turning to Imril, and walking to the side.::  Your turn, Lieutenant.  Five shots at the target.

Imril adjusted their grip. Realigned. Steadied.

Imril: .oO(I am the law!)Oo.

Alex got a flash of a man in a red, half-shielded helmet saying something about being the law.  That mental picture was followed by five pulses from his phaser.  Once they had lowered their phaser, Alex walked up to the target on the wall.

Bancroft: ::lightly competitive:: Alright, alright, now you’re just showing off. That target’s got one hell of a case of indigestion now.

Storm: ::To Roy:: More like non-digestion after those shots.  ::To both:: What do you both think of those shots?

Imril: I think I did alright. But I could have done better.

Alex turned to the target once again.  Her fingers reached out, pressing the cold wall behind each of the circles in the order that they had blossomed.  Her eyes narrowed, and as her head bobbed two times in succession, before she turned back to see what Roy had to say.

Bancroft: The grouping looks solid to me. I’d say you’d want more of the shots to land in the thoracic area for better effect – but I could be way off-base on that. Target’s down for the count, that’s for sure.

Storm:  In general ::Alex looked toward Roy:: our goal for those who aren’t in tactical or security is to shoot for center mass, which is chest, to groin.  You hit anyone on stun, and you’ll take them down, and since that’s a bigger target, it’s … well, it’s simply easier to hit.  ::Turning her eyes to Imril::  Your shots came in quick succession.  So did you re-aim for each shot or make adjustments?

Imril: I didn’t completely re-aim for every shot, no. I made adjustments based on where the last shot hit. Too high, angle lower. Too far right, go a teeny bit left. Accuracy versus speed of fire is always a trade-off, I know.

Bancroft: From what I remember, that mostly comes down to field application, right? ::beat:: Higher volume at the expense of accuracy is good for suppressing or covering fire… slower, more deliberate shots make more sense when you’ve got time and fewer targets. Did I get that right?

Storm: ::points at Roy:: Give that doctor a lollipop. He earned it.

Imril: Response

Bancroft: …So just to clarify, the appropriate time to throw one’s phaser at a target is… never?

Storm:  Can I couch my answer with an ‘almost never’?  In tactical, ‘never’ is a four-letter word. But definitely don’t throw it at a dancing spider. Trust me—it escalates quickly.

Imril: Response

Alex brought her hands together in three rapid-fire claps, and as she did, the grid, targets, and pedestal melted away, replaced with a grey, dank dome.  Ribbons of light slipped in between rocks high above, but refracted against the mist that hung suspended in the air.  The large center chamber grew jagged teeth, some from the ceiling, others from the floor, each capable of gnawing at anyone who wasn’t careful.  Three tunnels twisted into the cavern, like arms on a mutilated octopus.

One hand raised into the air, like an old-fashioned game-show beauty.  Her next words were spoken loudly and were magnified even louder by the shape of the room.

Storm:  Welcome to the actual drill … drill … drill …

Her words reverberated through the cave system.

Storm: Echoes. Because why not add ominous acoustics to phaser practice?

Imril/Bancroft: Response

The wind whipped and moaned through the openings, catching Alex’s hair, causing it to rise on end like a black haired Medusa before cascading back to her head.

Storm:  Sounds will play tricks on you in here.  Don’t trust them.  Your phaser has been set to cause a sharp sting if you’re hit.  It won’t harm you, and it won’t stun you, but you’ll definitely feel it if you’re hit. The simulation will end if I hit both of you or if either of you hits me. Any questions?

Imril/Bancroft: Response

Storm:  Catch as catch can.

Alex raised her phaser and struck at a small outcropping of rocks above their head, showering small shards of shrapnel down onto the two while she disappeared into the tunnels.
