(( Operations Center, Deck 5 - USS Artemis ))

Sitting behind his table, Ollie Kimmi Bergmen kept busy. The stack of PADDs on his table gradually diminished as he picked up each device, compared its data with what appeared on his screen, and forwarded the file to the appropriate channels within the ship's ever-hungry bureaucracy and placed the completed PADD in the tray on the opposite side of the table.

He was almost done when a voice from behind interrupted his pace. Brexis seemed to have wrapped up her task. Bergmen let out a sigh, feeling disheartened that he would never manage to finish it before another pile landed on his desk—regardless of all that Brexis expected him to handle, for that matter—and stood up to approach the desk she was sitting at, as she didn't seem to want to approach him.

Brexis: ::Handing him the PADD:: Here you go. All filled out.

Ollie picked up the PADD and quickly reviewed it—name, department, names who permitted her access, and signature were all there—taking no more than five or six seconds to look over the eight-page document before tossing it into the tray on the table.

Bergmen: Ok, Lieutenant, funny part we have behind us... So, where do you want to start, so I can set you permissions?

She pointed to the chair next to her, and Bergmen’s eyes did a three sixty as he rolled his eyes.

Brexis: Yeah, if we could give it a look over I’m sure I will have questions as we go.

Ollie shrugged and took a seat. He picked up PADD with her form from the tray with one hand while using his other hand to log into the system to summon a holographic board in front of them, as he was fairly certain that all the items she mentioned earlier would not fit on a 20-inch-wide console screen.

Bergmen: So, spare parts inventory. Technical Evaluation Report, OPS and Engineering, both. Alertness drill evaluation. Tactical skills evaluation for non-security personnel. Readiness reports, all divisions? Scan diagnostics, four eyes review reports?

Holoscreen quickly started filling with the documents and stats she requested. And Bergmen looked anything but happy after actually reading what she requested.

Brexis: ::Pointing to a section on the PADD:: How often are these diagnostics run? Does someone go over the scans every time? And is that something Chief K’Wara does?

oO For Koala's sake, how should I know? Oo

Bergmen: Let me see…

Bergmen enlarged the reports Brexis had highlighted on the holoscreen and quickly glanced through them. From the first glance, it was clear to him, based on the style, that few people had ever taken them out for actual inspection. He knew the style, the perfectly measured, meaningless technobubble that filled exactly twenty inches required. No trace of personal touch or any unnecessary elaboration. A textbook example of saying something that meant nothing. Ollie quickly scrolled back to the top to check the author’s name, as he planned to contact them later to pick up some valuable insights.

This was another level of a professional bureaucrat.

Bergmen: So, three times a week, yes, and to answer the last question, you will need to ask Lieutenant K’Wara, as that falls into “not in my paygrade territory”. Sorry, Lieutenant. Cargo Hold, LCARS, and how to build a planetary outpost in under a week, that’s where I can help you. Or you can check with their yeoman. They could know… ::shruggs shoulders::

Brexis: Response

Bergmen: I can upload you those reports to PADD later, and you can go through them with Chief, if you want…

Brexis: Response

Bergmen: Ok, next item… Tactical skills evaluation for non-security personnel

Ollie opened the next document and enlarged it on holo. Tables, graphs, links to sub-files with detailed evaluations of individuals and divisions, and comparisons on a timeline. It was all there.

Bergmen: Ah… look, Lieutenant Imril improved this shore leave Engineering general stats up to two points. Good of him.

For that fleeting moment, a genuine, almost childlike joy illuminated Bergmen's grumpy face, and the lieutenant nearly twitched the corners of his lips into a smile.

Brexis: Response
