As the commline closed Vik only had time to reply, more to himself than to her.

Olivera: That we should…

Returning to reality he turned to the Pilot.

Olivera: Looks like we got lucky. Let’s finish up and then we see how the Colonel and the others are progressing.

Kader: …Yes captain. Only a few more drafts await your approval.

((Time skip, 2 hours later))

Thera delivered as Vik and the Pilot worked to wrap up the plan.

With the data came a private written message. And a picture file. Excusing himself for a minute he managed to spend some time reading it as he downloaded it to a PADD.

=/
It was good to see you, Vik. I hoped we could have met, I have been meaning to reach you but was unsure if that was a good idea. With didn’t have any time to talk before you left, actually you didn't even say goodbye.
I just wanted you to know that I never forgot you, and even if I tried I couldn't. You haven't left me alone and our bond was fruitful in the shape of our child. I will spare you the grim details of our life, but enclosed I am sending you pictures of Vanda, reassuring you that she is well. In fact she became part of the ship and everyone in the Othello love her dearly. I know this might not be the best news for you at the moment but it was time for you to know.

Love
Thera
=/

Vik glanced again at the pic of the smiling toddler. Her skin was a sort of blueish gray and the little antenna, tipping out of an uncommon brown hair, made her look even more cute.

She had that round complexion, common on human children, as was wearing a Confederation uniform, fitted for her small size.

A turmoil of emotions fell upon him and he struggled to keep control. Closing the PADD he returned to the Pilot, who replied to his unvoice question.

Kader: It is there captain. I am sure of it now. With Othello’s data we can track the Atraxia long enough to pick up the trail ourselves if we move fast enough.

That eased down his tension, with renewed hope he smiled

Olivera: Then we better hurry Lieutenant, is it ready?

Kader: Yes captain, I have everything here.

He motioned over to a pile of PADDs, and Vik nodded, moving to collect them.

Olivera: Good, let's pack it up and we can call the Colonel.

Kader: If only we can convince them to actually go after this target.

Vik grinned at the Pilot.

Olivera: I don't think they will need much convincing.

The Pilot looked at the display again for a while longer. Something was bothering him, denounced by the gesture of him cleaning the sweat that had formed.

Kader: There is one more thing before we go. Computer, lock doors.

Vik reacted as the doors closed, stepping closer to the Pilot. Discreetly his free hand was holding the PADD side, ready to strike.

Calmly his voice didn't change, even his senses were battle ready.
One false move from the Pilot and he would smash his skull quicker than a second passed on his watch.

Olivera: Something wrong Lieutenant?

The Pilot had raised his arm, with the other pointing on the holographic display.

Kader: I am sorry. The colonel did not say anything but I think you need to know this captain. ::points:: When I requested any scans with ion trails, naturally that would include the Othello’s as well.

Vik narrowed his eyes. The only sign of his readiness for action.

Olivera: And?

Kader: It looks fine on a map but when you consider the timing of the scans. They are moving very slowly for a ship of their class. This is not normal.

Vik's tone of voice changed. Deep, threatening.

Olivera: Your point being?

Kader: I do not know if they sustained damage or not. But captain. If we get there first and alert the enemy with our mission. We don't know the extent of their retaliation. The Othello is in the area. They might not have the time to react and escape.

As the Pilot’s word sank the next seconds Vik’s mind flew into the If’s, the Why’s, the prospect of Thera and Vanda’s death. His own demise.
All of that was weighing so heavily on him that he dropped the PADDs on the console and they scattered around, some falling down.
He glanced at the Pilot and in his mind he was striking him. Pinning his head against the console time and time again, until it was unrecognizable.

With one deep breath, voice trembling, he managed to speak.

Olivera: We took a risk by asking for their data. Why did you mention this?

Kader: I understand captain, I only said it because I would want to know if I were in your place.

The only thing to do was warn them. Have Thera withdraw the Othello. He couldn’t risk their daughter’s life. He had to.
With sadness in his eyes he faced the Pilot as he started to pick up the fallen PADDs.

Olivera: Thank you. We can’t warn them. It’s too risky for our mission.

Kader: Response

Vik took a deep breath. His throat felt like he had swollen a shuttle.
With burning eyes he looked one last time at the display.

Olivera: Let’s get in touch with the Colonel. We have a mission to finish Lieutenant.

Kader: Response

He forced the giant lump down his throat, blinking as he tried hard not to let tears form in his eyes. Tapping the console he opened a comline.

Olivera: =^= Olivera to Colonel MacKenzie. Lieutenant Kader and I finished our task. We found a good target and have plans to reach it.

MacKenzie: =^= Response

Olivera: =^= Understood. Olivera out.

He turned to the Pilot, still fighting for control but not really caring if he looked troubled.
Vik didn’t know what he knew, but it wasn’t exactly a secret that would jeopardize the mission, even if it had struck him harder than anything in his life.
With a deep breath he stood straight before speaking to the Pilot

Olivera: I assume I can count on your discretion regarding the personal data I received.

Kader: Response

Vik simply nodded in a quiet thank you. He glanced one last time at the display before it was shut down, the Othello nothing more than projected numbers and a line.
He thought of Thera.

They would meet again. In Valhalla. And they would face another Ragnarok, the Doom of Gods, just like the one they were facing against the Shint.
And Vanda... Vanda would be Sól, and light the new world, Gimle.
