(( Captain’s Ready Room - Deck 1, USS Artemis-A ))

MacKenzie was turned in her chair so that it faced out the large window behind her desk. The view left a lot to be desired – the starbase’s hull and the docking arm that connected to the ship weren’t exactly pillars of galactic wonders, but some days, even the most benign views were preferable compared to the inside of her office. So far, it felt like the majority of her shore leave had been spent there – the personnel matters requiring her attention seemed to be far higher than usual. That, however, was to be expected, given that they had docked at Starfleet’s base of operations in the Borderlands for the first time in quite a while.

The chime rang. Again.

MacKenzie: Come in!

A Cygnian wearing operations gold made their way through the door.

K’Wara: Lieutenant Tamio K’Wara, reporting for duty, Sir.

MacKenzie picked up the PADD containing the officer’s service record.

MacKenzie: Welcome aboard, Lieutenant. I see here that your last assignment was serving as an exam proctor at the Academy?

Man, right to the point. She really wasn’t one to mince words these days, was she? She must be getting tired – a natural conclusion when

K’Wara: Three years, Sir. It’s been a while since I was on a Starship that wasn’t the Centris.

MacKenzie: I’ve spent a substantive amount of time serving as an exam proctor myself when I’m able to get back to Earth or one of the Academy satellite branches. It’s rewarding work, but never quite so much as the real thing.

K’Wara: Response

She cocked her head slightly.

MacKenzie: Speaking of the real deal, why are you here?

K’Wara: Response

MacKenzie rested her elbow on the surface of her desk and rubbed her forehead with her fingertips. As a commanding officer, one could generally glean a significant amount of information based on one’s service record, and there was something in K’Wara’s record that bore further exploration… After all, one didn’t join Starfleet only to choose to proctor Academy exams for years after having served on starships. Sure, Addison did her part occasionally whenever she had an opening in her schedule and proximity allowed, but it wasn't her posting.

MacKenzie: And, I think more importantly, what is it that took you off a starship and proctoring exams for three years, anyway?

K’Wara: Response

Tag, and TBC!
