Captain’s Log, Stardate 240205.15
We’re on final approach to Galaris IV (unofficially known as Kydon), a world whose history seems permanently etched in conflict. Officially, this is a diplomatic mission—an investigation into allegations of off-world interference in a war that’s been smoldering for decades. Both the Kobyar and Grunden governments have requested our presence, though it's hard to shake the feeling that we’re being drawn into a game where the rules are unclear and the stakes uneven.
There’s an uneasiness in my gut I can’t quite ignore. Kydon made first contact with the Federation just five years ago, but progress since then has stalled under the weight of instability. They’re a warp-capable world in name, but politically they remain fractured, volatile. And now, both sides claim that the other is being armed by foreign actors. Whether that’s true, or just a convenient narrative, is what we’re meant to find out. Starfleet wants answers—quiet ones. Facts without headlines. Influence without entanglement.
I’m under no illusions about the complexity of what lies ahead. The surface may present negotiations, but it’s the undercurrents I’m more concerned about. The planet is rich in rare minerals, strategically positioned along emerging trade corridors. That kind of resource rarely goes unnoticed. If someone is funneling weapons or technology into this civil war, it’s not out of ideology—it’s business.
This mission has the markings of a political minefield—one where missteps could have lasting consequences. We’ll deploy an away team once we enter orbit. Intelligence gathering, cultural observation, and hopefully, some straight answers. But I’m preparing for the reality that we might be walking into a conflict far more tangled than either side is willing to admit.
End log.

(( Briefing Room – Deck 1, USS Artemis-A ))
MacKenzie
sat at the head of the briefing room table, her elbows resting comfortably on her
chair’s armrests with her fingers steepled in front of her face as she waited for
the others to enter. She didn’t have to wait long – the doors swished open to
reveal her first officer. Picking up a PADD from the conference table’s
surface, she wagged it at him as he moved through the room and took the chair
to her right.
MacKenzie: Have you seen this?
Dakora: Response
She shook her head, tossing the PADD lightly onto the table.
MacKenzie: Once again, we find ourselves needing to mediate between
factions and get to the bottom of whatever shady exchange is happening in the
Borderlands.
Dakora: Response
The doors swished open again, allowing more of the crew to file in. When everyone
was in attendance, MacKenzie stood from her chair and pressed a button on the
conference room table that dimmed the lights. In the center of the table, its
holographic display activated to reveal a typically non-descript M-class planet,
which started to rotate.
MacKenzie: Good morning, everyone. We’ve received new orders from
Starfleet Command, effective immediately – we’re en route to the planet Kydon,
officially designated Galaris IV. It’s a Class-M world near the outer edges of
the Beta Quadrant, in the Borderlands Sector. Five years ago, Kydon made first
contact with the Federation after achieving warp capability only seven years
ago. But we’ve kept our distance since then. The planet is fractured—torn
between two dominant powers that have been locked in a decades-long civil
conflict: the Kobyar and the Grunden.
She reached down and keyed several commands into a PADD. The display of the
planet rotating in the center of the table transformed into two emblems with
images beneath them. On the left, the Kobyar: a reptilian-amphibian hybrid race
that were tall and lean. On the right, the Grunden: stocky, dog-like humanoids
with dense fur.
MacKenzie: The Kobyar are a reptilian-amphibian hybrid species. Highly
intelligent, urbanized, and deeply rooted in a technocratic caste system. They
pride themselves on logic, precision, and ritual. Militarily, they specialize
in air superiority—drones, artillery, stealth surveillance. Their cities are
sleek, advanced… and heavily monitored. The Grunden, on the other hand, are
tribal, democratic, and fiercely communal. Stocky, canine-like humanoids with a
warrior tradition grounded in honor and storytelling. Their forces rely on
ground strength—infantry, tanks, raiding tactics. What they lack in
infrastructure, they make up for in grit. Both factions have now contacted the
Federation with accusations. Each claims the other is receiving off-world
military support—covert assistance that could violate the pre-membership Prime
Directive. And both want us to prove they’re right.
She paused briefly to assess the skeptical looks on many of the crew members’
faces.
MacKenzie: We’ve been tasked with doing more than playing referee. We
are to embed with both governments, investigate the claims, and determine if
outside actors are manipulating the conflict. This is not a peacekeeping
mission – at least, not yet. Our orders are to observe, document, and—if
necessary—intervene only to prevent further violations of Federation law. This
will be delicate. These people are proud, wounded, and deeply entrenched in
their ways. Our presence alone could shift their perceptions, so we need to be
careful about what we say, and even more careful about what we assume.
Her lips pulled into a thin line as she took another look at them. Pressing another
button on the PADD, the holodisplay turned off and the lights returned to their
original level. She took her chair, rolled in toward the table, and rested her
clasped hands on the cool surface of the conference room table.
MacKenzie: Questions?
Any: Response
