(( Holodeck 1 – Deck 2, USS Artemis-A ))

While investigating a large draw of power coming from the holodeck, the commanding officer of the Artemis had inadvertently stumbled on an arcade based on 20th-century video games that Silveira was building. That wasn’t all she stumbled upon, she thought, but she also didn’t give too much thought about it – it wasn’t as if anyone who was paying attention couldn’t read what was written on those tea leaves. And besides, there were other more important matters to attend to.

Addison smiled at Sil as she slid down into the driver’s seat of a game that he had created for her and cracked her knuckles.

MacKenzie: This might be the most thoughtful gift I’ve received in a long time. … How do you make it go?

Vitor’s jaw dropped slightly, quickly replaced by a smile – obviously excited to show her what he had in store.

Silveira: It's well deserved. Now the steering wheel works the same, the pedals are for braking and acceleration, and the shift goes up and down a gear. ::Vitor leaned and exemplified.:: Only thing left are the views. ::He pointed to the four buttons, explaining them, from left to right:: Track view, as if you're in front of the car. Cockpit view, as if you're inside. Top view where you see the hood, and zoom out, where you see the whole car. I think that covers it.

MacKenzie smirked and rubbed her hands together, then proceeded to press all the buttons she had access to, testing their reactivity.

MacKenzie: Alright, Mr. Silveira – let’s get this show on the road.

Jovenan came closer as Silveira continued to give further instructions over the game’s music.

Silveira: Now you can pick the track and if you want manual or automatic shifts. The auto settings are easier, but the car doesn't go as fast, no matter the track you pick. There's three tracks: easy , medium and hard. And the option to do a one on one race. You have to get the highest position out of twenty cars and reach the waypoints in time. I think each race is three laps. Obviously you start from the bottom.

MacKenzie: Naturally… (beat) Well, let’s light it up!

Behind her, Vitor reached for Jovenan’s hand behind the Captain’s chair, and she squeezed it lightly. In front of her, the metallic-sounding voice on the screen offered a countdown from three. When the voice yelled “go,” Addison’s grip tightened on the steering wheel and she slammed her foot against the gas pedal. The view on the screen changed immediately as her car rocketed forward past several of the cars in front of her, akin to her experience driving the Argo. As she navigated the track, MacKenzie leaned in the opposite direction in which the car was turning, as though her physical bodily movements would help the car’s performance.

Silveira: Have fun…

Jovenan: You got them, sir!

MacKenzie cackled as she drove, occasionally slamming into the cars around her.

Behind her, the conversation between Jovenan and Silveira continued.

Jovenan: Thank you for showing me this place. It’s amazing!

Silveira: I am glad you liked it.

Addison’s brow furrowed as she studied the game on the screen. Her car seemed to be damaged and wasn’t responding as it had when the game began… Apparently there were consequences for crashing into the other cars, an element which the captain believed was a clear flaw in the game.

MacKenzie: Does the car get damaged if you hit things?

Vitor half replied, likely distracted by the Chief Science Officer.

Silveira: Yes the car does take damage, if you're lucky the hood pops up and flies…

Addison smirked to herself. Challenge accepted. She pursed her lips, annoyed by the distracting conversation that continued to take place behind her that was obviously hindering her performance.

Jovenan: I would… love to stay and… play another game with you… ::steps away, quicker:: But I think I should get back to work now.

Silveira: I… Don’t want you to go, but I understand…

MacKenzie hit her hand on the steering wheel after her car proceeded to careen off the track, hit the perimeter wall and burst into flames.

MacKenzie
: Want a try? This game is hard.

Jovenan: Response

Silveira: Why don’t you try another track, Captain?

MacKenzie: Fine, fine, suit yourself, Commander. Enjoy your day!

Jovenan: Response

Addison started to turn the steering wheel in an attempt to load another track, but the conversation continued behind her as Silveira called to Jovenan on the scientist’s attempt to leave the arcade.

Silveira: Nan, wait…

Jovenan: Response

He raced quickly to where the mini dolls were resting and he grabbed the mini Sil. After a brief moment, he was holding the doll out to Jovenan.

Silveira: Here… I would like you to take it. That way I am always… Close…

Addison rolled her eyes, only moderately annoyed at the fact that their conversation was interrupting her concentration on the game. The greater point of contention for the captain was more that the duo’s eventual courtship was taking so long to get underway. Didn’t the pair realize that life was short.

MacKenzie launched up from the game and made her way toward the pair.

She couldn’t help herself.

An intervention was necessary.

With one hand, Addison reached out to Jovenan’s arm, lifting it up. With the other, she extended Silveira’s hand that was clutching the doll. In the middle, they met. Addison looked to Silveira and nodded.

MacKenzie: She accepts. ::turning to Jovenan:: Vitor would like you to come by his quarters for dinner later. He’s a fantastic cook and it will be a delicious meal. ::turning to Silveira:: Jo will be there at 1900 hours.

She offered them a mischievous smile, obviously well aware of how uncomfortable she’d just made them both as she patted each of them on the shoulder.

MacKenzie: No thanks required – have a good time!

Addison made her way toward the holodeck doors and out into the corridor. When the heavy goldenrod doors of the holodeck closed behind her, she smiled and let out a soft cackle.

End Scene for MacKenzie!
