((Shuttle Kerynitis, Rakatha Province, Bajor))

Gnai was not prepared to act as a doctor, but it was going to try its best, dang it. It wouldn't be able to forgive itself if it had agreed to explore that cave and Renirs died because of its curiosity.

... Plus, it would certainly look horrible on its record, having a blood-on-its-tendrils count of two after just one mission and a shore leave. Wait. It wasn't certain if the Romulan ambassador counted, as that seemed to have been in an alternate timeline/universe/what-have-you... Either way, having a crewman die on its watch on shore leave was not a good look.

To the back of the shuttle, the telltale sound of a transporter materializing someone fizzled in the air, and Gnai turned to Ens. Savel. It was not a security officer, and it had absolutely no idea what to do if something hostile had beamed aboard, as it was worried might have. Even with barely any medical training, it knew that it was a far better doctor than it was a fighter. Best to let someone actually proficient in that go do what he did best.

That wasn't cowardice. That was just being sensible, of course.

Gnai: Savel, can you see who that is...? This will stay back with Renirs.
And try to keep her stable.

Savel: Response

Whatever was happening outside, Gnai was just pleased not to hear the report of any phasers (or other weapons). That was probably the other two, returning safely from the cave. If there was any sort of crisis, it didn't seem to be urgent, as it couldn't hear anyone yelling or running to the console. Gnai had been worried about the mine that Ens. Chevalier had stepped on, but it seemed to have not gone off - if that was indeed them returning.

And to its side, Renirs stirred again. Good! That was good!

Renirs: Do you happen to know much about medicine? Like, do they teach you it in the Academy?

And she was talking, even better. Gnai needed her to stay awake, it couldn't have her slip into a coma. Or whatever it was that made the tricorder insist she stay awake until a qualified medical professional could look at her.

Gnai: Yes, there is medical training at the Academy --

Before it could go on and explain that it had taken a bit of time in that class to doze off, as it had been a first-year and very much disinterested in humanoid biology (which it assumed Renirs would find amusing - what? An officer, admitting to slacking off? Unheard of!), its combadge chirped and Lt. Jovenan's voice rang out, full of fear.

Jovenan: =/\= Savel, Gnai! Beam us out the instant you can! Get the shuttle ready, we need to go to the closest hospital! ::pause, then cryingly:: Chevalier’s badly hurt! =/\=

oO WHAT. Oo

That had not been them, then, beaming off of the planet! It was fairly certain that whoever that had been was not hostile, or Ens. Savel would have made that known - whether through a firefight or some more subtle means. But who was it then?

Renirs: Did you hear that? ::pause:: But who’s outside, then?

Gnai: Unclear... Stay here, don't fall asleep! ::desperately tapping at its tricorder, trying to program something in as fast as it could:: Please!

Gnai left its tricorder on the bunk next to Renirs, recording as she lay there, and programmed to sound a loud alarm if her condition changed. Which included if she fell asleep. It felt somewhat cruel, but as far as Gnai was concerned, this was crucial to making sure that she didn't die.

Everything with Renirs was set, and it paused briefly, cringing inside at how badly her legs were wounded, before it ran out to meet up with Ens. Savel and the guests.

Bajoran Militia Security Chief: We thought we'd tracked down the last of these stashes from the Occupation... Something in that cave must have blocked our sensors.

Savel: Response

It seemed that he had the situation well under control. Gnai felt immense relief as it saw the two Bajorans in uniform - one brown and tan, and one blue and copper - that stood to the side of their transporter, and Ens. Savel manned the transporter controls.

Jovenan: =/\= Energize! Get us out! =/\=

Bajoran Militia Security Chief: ::as transport is in progress, to their medic subordinate:: Stay here and assist, I'm going to go check the cave and call in a full defusal squad.

Bajoran Militia Medic: ::saluting:: Aye sir, I'll get them to the central hospital.

Bajoran Militia Security Chief: ::as the transport finishes:: Scratch that - it looks like they'll need more help than anticipated.

The particles flared up as the transporter came online, and the grisly scene manifested itself aboard the Kerynitis. Was Lt. Jovenan hurt as well? There was too much blood to tell who it came from, and where it came from. Gnai had never seen that much blood in its life, but here it was, covering the officers and slowly spreading across the pad.

The worst part was the leg. The shards of bone that stuck out from it sent shivers across Gnai's tendrils, and it found itself unable to look at it any longer.

Gnai was thankful for the presence of the Bajorans, as it was sure it couldn't take care of all three of their casualties alone. How was it now the only one from their crew who could function as a doctor? Lt. Jovenan seemed hardly in the state to be much help, and Ens. Chevalier... He was not going to be doing much at all, period. Ens. Savel could be of great help, of course, but they still needed someone to fly the shuttle to wherever this central hospital was. Could they even make it? With the amount of blood lost, they might not make it before Ens. Chevalier's limb cost him his life.

Gnai: Lieutenant, are you okay??

Savel/Chevalier: Response?

Jovenan: Get us all to a hospital. Please.

Gnai was fully in agreement with her. This was urgent, and they just needed to GO.

Gnai: ::turning to the Ens. Savel, louder than it needed to be:: Can you pilot?

Bajoran Militia Chief: ::starting towards navigation:: I'll punch in the coordinates for the nearest hospital for you.

Savel/Chevalier: Response

As they left to sort out navigation, Gnai and the Bajoran medic wordlessly worked to deal with the casualties. There was little that they could do with the leg, so it remained on the pad for now as a horrific reminder of just how much they had lost on what was supposed to be a simple shore leave mission. There were more important things to do, like getting the Lieutenant and Ensign to a bunk and stabilized.

All Gnai could do was thank the prophets for the Bajorans.

((Recovery Ward, Rakantha Central Hospital, Bajor))

Every part of the hospital felt sterile, which was good, but it was hardly a place that Gnai wanted to spend time in. The lights were artificial and just a slight bit too bright for it. But even with the mild discomfort, Gnai had refused to go back to the ship just yet, not wanting to leave the rest of the team here alone. Not after its decision to make a detour to a cave to indulge its curiosity. The worst part was that it was completely uninjured (the emergency medical team here had still insisted on scanning it to be certain though), yet, it was the reason everyone else had been. No, it had to stay and make sure that they were all fine.

The wait was the worst part, as it sat around the hospital reading whatever it could focus on for a few minutes at a time on a PADD. It couldn't sink itself into anything, not while worrying about its crewmates survival. Not even the most recent article put out by Dr. Leired, a stellar cartographer that Gnai considered to have a writing skill leagues above her colleagues, could distract it for very long. And it had no desire to talk about anything at the moment, thankfully being ignored by most of the others waiting by hiding behind its PADD when approached.

Just as Gnai was navigating back to the subspace database to find another journal to skim abstracts from, Lt. Jovenan appeared, dressed in some sort of medical gown. What a relief to see her up and about. Gnai stowed the PADD away and walked up to meet her and the nurse that she was chatting to.

Bajoran Nurse 2: Hello, can I help you?

Jovenan: Hi, yes. May I ask about one of my crewmembers, Ensign Jaseb Chevalier? Is he still in surgery? What’s his status?

Bajoran Nurse 2: Let me check... ::tapping at her console:: Oh, it looks like he just got out of surgery a bit ago, and... yep! He should be waking up just around now.

Jovenan: Response

Bajoran Nurse 2: Do you want to go see him? ::pause, peering behind her:: Can I help you?

Gnai waved sheepishly to the nurse, before gesturing to itself, and then Lt. Jovenan.

Gnai: ::to the nurse:: This is one of the officers under the command of Lieutenant Jovenan. Hopefully this is not an intrusion, but this is also concerned about the recovery of the others...

Any: Response?

Jovenan: Response

Gnai: ::to Jovenan:: Lieutenant, it is good to see you doing better. ::to both:: Do you know if Crewman Renirs is going to make a full recovery as well?

Jovenan: Response

Any: Response?

Bajoran Nurse 2: Well, if you're all settled... ::getting up from her desk:: We can go see how he's doing.

The nurse led the officers past a set of doors, then another, into the post-surgical ward. Attended by another Bajoran medical officer, Ens. Chevalier lay on a bed, covered in a blanket.

Chevalier: Response?

Any: Response?

((OOC: Gnai would have been very focused on its own stress and not really paid attention to Ens. Savel, if he's there as well. Didn't want to overstep and say he was there with it for certain, but wanted to try and leave it open in case he is there [or anyone else, with the ANY tag]! Also trying to leave open the next bit with Chevalier, as who knows where the wild world of Bajoran medicine might take his case! :D Thanks for the patience, this has been a blast so far. Pardon the pun.))
