(( Side Street, Tecra, Da’al ))
With the boy no longer pinned down and a good idea of the extent of his injuries, Hiro was starting to feel like he had some control of the situation - for the first time since they’d gotten to this planet. He made sure to explain the unfamiliar devices to the Teolin to avoid frightening him with alien technology. Goodness knew he’d already had enough to be afraid of, and Hiro didn’t want to risk inciting the same rage state in the injured Da’al boy they’d seen in the other Da’al they’d encountered.
Jones: This will keep your foot from moving around until we can get you fixed up, ok?
Teolin: ok.
Osuna: ::To Teolin:: Hey, you’re pretty tough… You feeling hungry, thirsty?
Teolin looked to Hiro, who smiled, giving a tiny nod of encouragement, then looked back to Osuna.
Teolin: Water?
Osuna: Yeah – yeah, that I can do. ::Glancing to Jones:: Right, doc?
Jones: Absolutely. I’ve got a flask in my kit, Lieutenant, if you wouldn’t mind?
Yellir: response
Osuna collected the water while Hiro finished securing the boy’s foot and ankle. The stasis device was working a treat, and Hiro allowed himself a moment of pride for having added it. He was definitely going to suggest they become standard components for field kits.
Yalu: ::looking up at Osuna:: Hanging in there, lieutenant?
Osuna: Doing alright up here. This young man’s really keeping it together. ::Smiling to Teolin:: I feel safer now, with you around.
Teolin: Why?
Osuna: You’ve been through a pretty situation, and you’re gonna come out just fine – you’ve gotta be a lucky charm or something.
“Lucky” might be just the word for it. With the ministrations as completed as they could be for the time, Hiro now performed a more complete scan of the boy. Concentration of the “Da’allium” in this house was under 22ppm. It was practically fresh air. He started connecting dots from the conversation with Jovenan earlier. Just as with a connect-the-dots activity for children, each new connection revealed slightly more of the whole picture.
oO
Yalu: ::sotto voce:: I can’t help but notice that the kid isn’t full of rage. Got any hypotheses?
Jones: Actually, I do. The air in here is pretty much free of dust and therefore free of what I just started calling “Da’allium.” … we can workshop a better name later. Anyway, I think between that and the fact he’s been away from other Da’al, we can conclude the combination of Da’allium and Da’al equals crazed, irrational, aggressive behavior.
Yalu: Response
Jones: I’d really rather not take him out into that. I’m 90% sure he’ll go all primal once exposed.
Yalu: Response
Hiro looked over to where Osuna was eyeing fixtures in the room and Yellir was consulting her tricorder. Hiro couldn’t feel like they’d gotten pinned down here. Sure they were safe-ish, but they were also pretty much unable to do anything.
Yellir: response
Osuna: What are the odds of getting the water running, you think? We checked on power infrastructure, but how are the pipes in this neighborhood?
Yellir: response
Yalu: ::to Osuna:: The boy’s parents—if they’re out there—must be worried sick. I want to report to the authorities that we’ve found him, but I also don’t want to give away our location. Those mobs aren’t going to disband just because it gets dark. What do you recommend?
Osuna / Yellir: response
Jones: I agree. Staying here seems like the best bet for now.
Yalu: Right. If we’re going to be playing house for the night, we might as well make ourselves as comfortable as we can. ::to Yellir:: Lieutenant, put us to work for you. What do you need from us to help get some potable water and some power flowing into this place?
Yellir/Osuna: response
Jones: Got it.
While he helped get things situated, Hiro’s mind continued processing the information they’d gathered and the possible solutions. If he was correct in the hypothesis that the Da’al’s telepathic/telekinetic ability was the force holding the Da’allium together, some kind of disruption to that field should allow the compound to break up entirely. Problem solved. But what could do that?
He brought a throw pillow over to where Teolin lay resting. The blue-green glow of the stasis field caught Hiro’s attention.
Jones: Commander Yalu … ?
Yalu: Response
Jones: I’ve got an idea. It’s either incredibly good or incredibly bad.
Yalu: Response
Jones: I think we can use a stasis field hooked into one of the force field barriers to temporarily block the interaction between the Da’al and the Da’allium. Once that connection is severed, the Da’allium should just … stop existing.
Yalu: Response
Jones: We’ll, if it doesn’t work, we’d probably get torn apart by an angry mob. Transporters wouldn’t be able to beam anyone in or out of the area around the adapted field generator because of the interference.
Yalu: Response
