(Main Engineering, Deck 15 - USS Artemis-A))
It was hard to tell what Gnai was looking at as the energy lines darted about its suit. The flashing lights that contoured its own body were clearer to interpret.
Gnai: Oh, thank you, again, Ensign… This is very glad that you’re willing and able to help.
Imril: For this historical program, what kinds of sources do you have to work from?
Gnai bobbed slowly in its tank as it pondered the question.
Gnai: Well… the exodus was a long time ago, so while records do exist, in many cases they’ve degraded or the processes for accessing them have deprecated.
Imril: ::Nodding:: A problem I encountered more than once when working on the arcade.
In the case of the video game booths and pinball tables recreated for the simulation, emulator programs had long existed to bridge the gap of decades or centuries in development from 4-bit gaming to far more expansive programming. But some of those emulators themselves had needed to be reverse engineered in order to access the original data in a form that could be interpolated by the Holodeck.
Gnai: Most of what will be most easily available are second and third-degree recountings of the event, and previous world.
Imril: Oral histories are just as precious as hard data. They illuminate with a different sort of light. They tell us about how living, feeling people viewed their world and each other.
As Imril well knew from the previously-discussed historical holograms.
Gnai: Early generations of diasporic Galadorans were less than… sentimental for some reason about the first Galador.
Imril: I won't begin to guess at why. ::Looks to readout screen:: Electrolysis complete. Initiating drying cycle.
The fluids were flushed from the holographic tubes, and a rush of warmed air flowed across the metallic frame.
Gnai: repsonse
Imril: Did the ancient Galadorans preserve a record of the planet’s rough coordinates? With those, it won't be too hard to get the ship’s computer to back-calculate an accurate star-map for the night sky at the time of the diaspora. I don't know how important that is to you, but it could add visual flair if nothing else.
If the engineer recalled correctly, a wormhole was involved in the Galadorans’ loss of their original world. Pinpointing which one from within Starfleet’s stellar databases could prove another way to lock down specifics.
Gnai: repsonse
Imril nodded at the answer, and mentally tabled talk of the past for a moment. The time had come to seek more answers regarding the present. They shut down the hologram, leaving nothing to interfere with an examination of the suit’s mobility.
Imril: Alright, let’s run through those motion tests again. See if there’s any joints still giving you trouble.
They took up their tricorder again, ready to hone in on any area where Gnai reported a further problem.
